We sailed the end of September and early October 2018 (not a choice in date sailed box). Never been to Sweden before. Best part was post cruise, wine tasting stops, "Highlights of the Alps" and Zermatt. Hotel Alex in Zermatt was exceptional I would highly recommend the post tour and Hotel Alex! The weather was clear and the Matterhorn was spectacular! This was our 5th Viking River Cruise segment ( Grand European, France's Finest, Paris to Switzerland) and we got the level of service and food that we have come to expect from our other cruises. We also like the ability to bring wine on board for our room. First Class! Negative Comments: Not a fan of the UN and probably could have had better use of our time. Hotel in Geneva was beautiful inside but I didn't really care for the area (train yard out our window). Seems like in Paris and the othe big cities Viking could locate a hotel closer to the old parts of town or at least something within walking distance of some activities.Always having to take a taxi, bus, subway ot tram. Tired of Paris (2nd time of Pre Cruise package) and if we take another vacation in Europe we probably won't do a Paris stay. We are in our eraly 70's so what we enjoy might be different from other cruises. Read Less

This was our first river cruise but it will definitely not be our last. We were looking for something last minute and because of the free air fare offer, Viking met our needs. We chose this particular cruise because of the itinerary. We wanted to go to Switzerland and we had never been to Paris. Every experience from the initial booking of our reservations to final disembarkation was excellent. There were only 180 passengers onboard, which allowed us to get to know our fellow travelers. The crew went out of their way to make everyone welcome and comfortable. Food was excellent. The views along the Rhine River were incredible. The excursions included in the fare were definitely worthwhile. We also booked some of the additional excursions and felt our money was well spent on all of them. We will definitely choose Viking again for either a river or ocean cruise. Their attention to detail and their outstanding quality make Viking our first choice. Read Less

You could tell from the first day that Viking Hild had a special relationship within the crew and with the passengers. This was my second time sailing and it far surpassed my first! There were a few challenges with river water levels, but it did not interfere with the upbeat atmosphere of the entire voyage. The port excursions were well thought. The Cruise Director was great, well informed and always on hand. My favorite shore excursion was in Strasbourg, France. "Taste the Best of Alsace" was all day and great fun! We sampled many different local foods and wine. The Gothic Strasbourg Cathedral was awe inspiring from the architecture to the famous astronomical clock. Having grown up in a US Navy family, being a Navy Nurse and married to a 30 year Naval Officer, I was happy to pay my respects to General George Patton in Luxembourg at the American Cemetery. The cruise culminated in Switzerland and our visit to the Alps proved the "hills are alive with the Sound of Music!" Read Less

Although we were onboard the Viking Hild for seven nights, also included were two nights in Zurich, Switzerland and two nights in Paris, France. Those hotel accommodations were excellent! Our hotel in Paris was right at the Eiffel Tower! We visited 4 different countries on the trip (Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, and France.) Free excursions were provided daily where we got to visit the nearby cities with transportation provided by Viking. We received and experienced the real culture and beauty and history of these beautiful places. There were only 189 passengers, so everyone received personal care and attention. The foods were prepared according to the country we visited .... all were DELICIOUS! The staterooms were pristine, and the beauty of the world we visited were breathtaking. Our Cruise Director, Emma, and all the Viking Staff (airport, hotels, cruise tour guides, and ship) far exceeded our expectations. GREAT GREAT JOB, VIKING! THANK YOU!!!!!! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the start and end locations as well as the route along the way. Although we have taken several ocean cruises, this was our first time on a river cruise. The most impressive aspect of the cruise experience was the thoroughness of the planning. From our receipt of the travel documents prior to departure to our return flight to Houston, we were impressed with how flawlessly the entire trip was planned and executed. Once on board the Viking Hild, we enjoyed the excellent service and accommodations. The dining experience was consistently outstanding. Also worth noting were the shore excursions offered at every port of call. The inlcuded morning walking tours were all lead by knowledgeable local guides, and most of the optional tours were excellent. The most memorable of the optional tours was the "Highlights of the Alps." We greatly enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to our next Viking River Cruise! Read Less

We started in Zurich and ended in Paris as we traveled on the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. All the stops in Germany were great but I especially loved our time in Paris. Would recommend 1 less stop in Germany and 1 more day in Paris. Loved the size of our boat which gave us a change to meet the other passengers. A river cruise gives you a closer look of the shoreline and gives you calmer waters to travel on. The cruise director was very good in giving us an explanation of each days excursions. The crew was extremely friendly and helpful. Loved our cabin. It was so modern and clean and always had toiletries replenished. The TV always gave tips on sailing. Having wifi on the boat was a plus for us and it was free. I would absolutely recommended this cruise to future travelers. Love this amazing cruise. Read Less

The service was outstanding, from the housekeeping staff to the dining room staff. It was like being on a moving Ritz Carlton. We loved that we didn't have to deal with kids running around. All the guests were friendly and gracious. The food was outstanding. I was surprised I didn't gain more pounds. The drinks were great. I loved the Silver package that gave us access to our selection of wines and spirits any time of the day. The tours at each stop were excellent and educational. Having locals tell us about the local history and customs was unexpected. It gave us an appreciation of the culture that is hard to get when traveling on your own. We enjoyed this so much we decided that the 7 days on the river was too short so after being home 10 days, we signed up for a 15 day cruise next year. Read Less

Wanted to see the Alps and Paris and points between. This was a wonderful way to do it. We took the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur and twent by bus to Zurich. Zermatt is a perfect Swiss village with views of the Matterhorn. The included trip to the Gornergrat Glacier gave a lot of insight into the effects of climate change on the glaciers. Based on past experience with Viking we knew ithis trip would be first class Hotel choices in Geneva and Zurich were 4 star but the location was not convenient. Everything else was perfect. We took included tours and some optional ones (recommend optional Taste of Alsace to all foodies).and in some cities just wandered on our own. Ship was ljust the right size. Cabins have plenty of storage and we were only in it to sleep. When we weren’t on shore we sat on the sun deck and relaxed. Food choices were good with lots to pick from. Well, our Viking cruise was outstanding! We had a new ship (commissioned in 2017) which in our opinion is so important. In 2016, we took an AmaWaterways cruise (AmaDante) which was an older ship (7 years old). What we liked about the Viking Hild: heated floor in the bathroom; food was good; hot towels when we first came onboard; tour director initially said to us that we need to come to him with any requests that we might have or report anything that is not enabling us to have an awesome cruise; floor to ceiling windows in lounge, dining room, and our room; the ship had another restaurant onboard that was on the front of the ship on the 3rd floor for lunch and dinner (lighter buffet and meals); top of the ship was gorgeous with an exercise walk about, putting green and shuffle board, herb garden, plenty of umbrellas and chairs; ample counter space in our room with a large screen TV mounted on the wall; great movies to watch on our TV; night lighting in the bathroom; plenty of mirrors; had a safe and ample drawers and shelves; our balcony was so wonderful (on our last river cruise, I felt closed in . . .not on this cruise!); during a lecture, appetizers and small drinks were served as we listened; chocolate eclairs were passed out as we came back from one of our day's events; and then there was German night- waiters and staff all dressed up in costume and the tables were all decorated and had pretzels hanging in the middle, the food was outstanding and then the entertainment was excellent(self wound organ, singers, accordions, etc.). Overall, the memories that we will have of this Viking cruise are the vineyards all over as far as you could look- even on steep slopes; the many castles that we saw and we toured one that was fantastic; and then there are the swans . .we couldn't believe they were all along the Rhine and even into Switzerland on their lakes. The financial value of the cruise. I am a widow and finances are important to me. I would take the same cruise again or another cruise in a second. EEVERYTHING was beyond my expectations. I was very hesitant to travel aboard with different languages, currency and traditions. The cruise director put me immediately at ease. Erna explained the daily events, what to expect and always answered any questions graciously. The entire crew were exceptionally helpful and caring. The daily excursions were wonderful and I only took one paid additional tours to the Alps. The guides used on the daily tours were wonderful. Very knowledge, friendly and seemed to enjoy sharing the knowledge of their communities and interact with their guests. The food and service was excellent and I enjoyed experiencing local foods as a choice on the nightly menu. Arriving in Paris after the cruise went very well at an excellent hotel. One morning I looked out the window at breakfast and our wonderful captain was carrying out the garage. Employees worked as a team from all appearances. The inclusive tours were wonderful. I am a widow and have no one to travel with, but I would like to think I will go again. I wish there was a way “singletons” could travel because it is a safe environment to be in on the ship and tours. Speaking of tours, the guides were excellent, personable & knowledgable. All meals were great, chief Adiran was always at the doors to greet cruisers with the other head dining personnel. Meals were quite and leisurely. The young lady in housekeeping for our area was very pleasant and accommodating; going beyond the car of duty. Sorry I can’t remember her name. This being my first river boat cruise, I found the guest services exceptional. Erna our Viking cruise director was so patience with everyone. Plus she extremely knowledgable about EVERYTHING!!! The option of tours covered all of our age groups -- or you felt comfortable NOT taking a tour that day and just staying on board the ship.I only wish that the ship could be docked in an area where you could just leave and explore the town close to the ship. We went on this cruise on the recommendation of close friends (all of us in our early 70's) that we join them. They had thoroughly enjoyed a previous Viking river cruise (Amsterdam to Budapest) and wanted to take another. My husband and I had never taken a cruise, mostly because we were never enticed by the concept of a-week-at sea-with-4000-of-your-closest-friends. Our trip that started in Zurich for two days, then cruised from Basel to Trier and ended with two days in Paris with 180 very interesting people - and we met most of them - was a singular experience. It seemed that no detail was overlooked or left to chance. My husband is convinced after our trip that Viking has an extraordinary emphasis on a thorough "systems analysis" of everything about cruise vacations, learning from each trip how to improve all aspects from food, to tours, to staff selection and training, to ship design, to baggage handling, and more. It shows, and the result, which we experienced on our trip, was first rate. Our meals were excellent, although it took several days before we thought to ask for smaller portions and ate less! Wine selections were well paired with entree choices; our chef was exceptional and willing to share recipes. He even treated us to not-on-the-menu very fresh white asparagus one evening because he found it in a local market. Our program director was ever so effective, and her descriptions each evening of what to expect the next day were thorough and presented with enthusiasm that encouraged us to participate in the tours. And whoever it is who chooses the tour guides in each town is to be commended; they were all humorous, welcoming, and very informative. We learned, and were reminded of, much history of Germany and France. The evenings in the lounge after dinner were relaxing, and often exposed us to local culture. Just enough entertainment to fuel camaraderie without being over-whelming, And the serving staff members in the dining room were so charming and helpful that we were not at all offended when they gently suggested that perhaps we could (finally) move to the lounge after dinner and let them prepare the dining room for breakfast! We were exceptionally impressed by the Hild's captain and his senior staff. A remarkable team, and very personable. Another example of Viking cruises' attention to the details that matter. Not everything was perfect, though nothing detracted from the overall experience. The ship had no exercise equipment, although we walked a great deal that worked off some of the calories. Our hotel in Paris was just okay (we were really spoiled by then), but close to the Eiffel Tower and some great restaurants. And there were several places where we docked (e.g., Strasbourg) and would have liked to have had more information about the immediate area. In Strasbourg, we were docked in a park, Le Jardin des Deux Rives, which was perfect for an after dinner walk but all the historical signs were in German or French. Alas, we only speak English and no one on board knew the history of this interesting spot. Just a brief printed handout would be enough. Would we take another Viking cruise? We are already signed up for the Viking Homelands ocean cruise next May, and are eagerly awaiting this different kind of experience. Read Less

We’re 66 and 65 yrs old and a Viking River Cruise has been on our list of things to do for some time. We made reservations with Viking River Cruises for the Swiss Apls to Paris cruise aboard the Viking Hild. We have made server ocean cruises and a small ship cruise of Alaska but this was our first river cruise. We elected to use our accumulated air miles for upgrades for air travel so Viking did not plan our flights. They did arrange transport to the airport for our departure. Due to the flight duration we decided add to our travel plans and arrived several days early to tour Switzerland before meeting up with Viking in Zurich. Without any doubt this cruise was by far our best adventure. Maybe ‘adventure’ is the wrong word to use because everything was perfectly scripted by Viking. The ship was extremely comfortable with lots of natural light and the Scandinavian decor was refreshing. The crew was exceptional. They quickly learned your name and seem to anticipate your request. Meals and wine selection were excellent, either buffet or cooked to order. We had dinner most evenings on the Aquavit terrace (bow) which allowed us to enjoy the weather and stunning views. We selected the beverage package which included a broad selection of premium wines and liquors. I could go on and on but suffice to say we thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and are in the process of selecting a longer cruise for 2019. Read Less

My husband and I were looking for a special way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary so we decided to take our first Viking River Cruise. We were NOT disappointed and have been bitten by the Viking travel bug! We chose to add 2 extra days in Basel before the cruise started. After an orientation walk by a very informative and personable guide we had plenty of time to discover Basel on our own. Once we boarded The Hild, the onboard staff was all so helpful and friendly. Our stateroom was perfect for the two of us! Our balcony gave us the option to watch the river go by in our pajamas if we chose. We enjoyed the relaxed dining room attire and the food was marvelous! In addition to the included excursions we took at least one extra excursion in each port. Our favorite was probably the Alsatian Wine and Tasting excursion which was as much about strolling through Alsace as it was about tasting wine. We had the pleasure of visiting the Albert Seltz vineyard where we had a direct audience with the vintner himself who was very knowledgeable and friendly. We wish we had added 2 days in Amsterdam to the end of our cruise but that might have to wait for our next trip. We loved that The Hild was small and cozy and not a overwhelming, crazy, floating megalopolis as some cruise ships have felt to us. We would HIGHLY recommend this cruise and Viking! Read Less

Because I sell wine, I was interested in seeing some of Alsace and the Mosel valley. We travelled with Viking twice before and were delighted with the cruises, so we chose Viking again, and we were not disappointed. Our two previous cruises were not on the Longships, and we were very very impressed with this newer model. It is spectacular really, with the lovely option of breakfast and lunch on the Aquavit terrace. When it was cold, the doors in the Terrace were closed, but we could still enjoy the passing scenery. On a few gorgeous days, we were able to eat outside, and it was amazing. On the top of the ship is a walking track, which we used on days when we were not on shore a lot. The view from there was excellent. The stateroom we had was a decent size with a nice balcony we used often. The Restaurant was roomy and pleasant. The food on board was delicious for all the meals, and the included wines, though they only alternated from day to day, were 8 choices overall and quite good. The service was marvelous, and though a few of our dinner mates complained, I could find nothing lacking. I thought that the staff worked exceptionally hard and were unfailingly pleasant. The tours on each day varied. We had mainly very interesting tour leaders who maintained our interests, but on a few occasions the tour did not live up to what we had experienced on our other cruises. The optional tours we took were quite good, though, especially the tour of the Alsace wine country with Juliette. She gave us a fascinating tour. The hotels on either end of the tour were good. The Renaissance in Zurich was very nice, and it was a simple, short ride on the tram to central Zurich. We bought our tickets at the hotel and really enjoyed riding the tram with the Swiss. The Pullman in Paris was good, and in a perfect location next to the Tour Eiffel! The metro was super close too, and we hopped on each day to tour. Really, we loved the cruise/tour and the Longship and can't wait to book another cruise. Read Less

Stories of an excellent trip with Viking are true. Paris to Zurich with pre-cruise in Paris and post-cruise in Geneva. Have not seen such personal care, tight scheduling, no issues with transportation, and every staff member, and tour guide and driver, were competent and friendly. Program Director Erna on the pre-cruise and cruise was outstanding. Program Director Annick on the post-cruise was also outstanding. They both took care of the group with patience and vast experience in the travel industry. Viking has gems in both of these gracious and helpful ladies. The Captain and crew did everything in a competent and friendly manner. Food was of high quality and the menu was quite varied. Had cabin 320 Veranda stateroom. Room steward Tyron did a superb job. Many table mates had the drink package, however we did not, and were still happy with the wine/beer included at meals, We did purchase a few drinks outside the meals and may make one rethink the drink package. Hotel accommodations, with the exception of the Zurich Renaissance (location and amenities), were very nice. We lack for nothing, and didn’t have to purchase anything extra for this trip. It is a bit expensive, but it is worth the money. We still talk about this trip to our friends frequently. We signed up for one twice as long a year later. We are looking forward to cruising with biking again and again. Read Less
