We chose this cruise for a break after the Christmas festivities. Fewer crowds. Took the included tours. While informative, somewhat boring. Will consider “pay “ tours in the future. I strongly DO NOT recommend included tour in Cartegena. On the bus looking at the poverty of the area then to a less than photographic lighthouse. Then back on the bus. No time to explore/ shop in the city prior to boarding. We had the ES1 suite. Nice amenities. However, water leak from toilet 2 days in a row. Crew was prompt to fix it on day 2. Few activities on board so LOTS of downtime and looking for things to do on sea days. This is our first “small ship “ cruise. Good staff/customer ratio. Staff willing to chat and share their stories. Able to see many of the same customers and get to know each other more easily than the larger ships. Overall, good cruise. Excellent staff. Food OK. Evening shows good. Cabin staff 5stars! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary over Thanksgiving day. Here are my pros and cons regarding Viking Ocean: Pros Great service with Concierge/Viking Services Great service with Room Services Friendly service from all crew Good well organized excursions Food is very good in 'Chefs Table' Comfortable bed and spacious room. Cons Lacking entertainment for anyone middle age or younger. The only live band with dancing doesn't come on stage until 11PM. Seriously? Terrible coordination and communication when dropped off at airport. A Viking agent only spoke Italian and assumed everyone was flying with Delta. Was not notified well in advance that transfer to the ship from hotel was at 9.45am, we already has a booking (tickets) to a museum. Too casual in fine dining restaurants. Dress code not set in place. Not a good fit for us as we like to dress up for elegant restaurants. Not a bad cruise-line, but next time we'll try Crystal or Seaborne. Read Less

Itinerary was what we wanted to see with included excursions. Enjoyed the beverage inclusion. The tour guides were above average. We felt like we could relax when we wanted to and do activities when we wanted. The entertainment was fair and would have preferred a higher level of singers. The one thing we would have liked was access to a sports channel for those of us that follow college football and basketball. We felt the air arrangements that were done for us were good and connections were efficient so we were not spending an inordinate amount of time in airports. The dining room food was very good and portion size was not overwhelming for small eaters. Our cabin steward was very attentive and connected with us daily. I took advantage of the fitness room which I felt was very small and had limited cardiovascular equipment for many that enjoy exercise. Read Less

We did three river cruises with Viking before taking our first ocean cruise this Fall (Iconic Western Mediterranean). Wow. I could have easily spent a couple days just at sea enjoying all this ship has to offer. The spa! One of the best features on these ships. Simply amazing. And...included! You can snow grotto/sauna/steam/whirlpool...your fanny off. They even have lockers with cushy robes/rubber slippers and a little amenity bag, and of course water and towels. Next: the cabins: We had a Penthouse Verandah and it was very spacious. The daily replenishing of alcohol didn’t hurt either. Very liberal with the mini fridge. Very clean. Lots of storage. The only ding I have is I would have liked to have the bedding changed at least every other day. I think they just remade the bead and sprayed some sort of freshener on it. Food: So good! My favorites were Manfredi’s and the pool grill. The best hamburger/hotdog/cheesesteak at sea. And cold good beer. The steaks at the main restaurant are really good, too. Great salads. Free laundry anyone? Right down the hall washers/driers and included detergent. Irons/ironing boards. In some cabin categories they offer free pressing—-sign me up! It was awesome. I am currently planning our next Viking ocean cruise. Read Less

This cruise covered a large section of the Mediterranean Sea so I felt it would give us a broad view of history and architecture, my interests. We arrived in Barcelona on time and boarding was very smooth, our ship was docked very near the Ramblas and that made it easy to get to this fabulous city. In fact all our ports and cities in the itinerary are treasures that only get better the more you learn about them. The Viking Star is very comfortable, easy to get around once we got our sea legs, all food was great, loved the fresh fruit for breakfast, the local flavors throughout the day and evening. Our cabin fit into our lives just right, it feels like home in no time at all. Enjoyed time onboard on the sun deck, the spa, had to do the snow grotto and it was so good. The crew is the best, everyone is helpful and friendly, its like they know what I want before I even ask. The shore excursions were done just right, I liked the early start to get ahead of the crowds, and the local guides are what is needed to really get the local flavor of the place. The drivers and coaches are first rate. Our extension, Tuscany! was just the right touch to complete our lovely time in Italy and the meals offered were superb. I can do this kind of trip many times over, will love to spend more time in the cities. Read Less

We have sailed on multiple lines and have a number on premium lines like Oceania. Having had a positive experience on Viking River, we took our first cruise with Viking Ocean. The ship was very comfortable and the service was extraordinary. The 900 passenger size made it feel large enough to have the amenities we wanted, but small enough to be cozy and make new friends. The entertainment was very good and had a nice variety. The shows were understandably smaller than the mega ships, however very enjoyable. The restaurants had delicious food great service. The specialty Restaurants were excellent. The buffet had a good variety and was acceptable, but not outstanding. The grill-to-order steaks were excellent, but other dishes left room for improvement. We enjoyed the informative port talks and several ment lectures. Interesting subjects presented by knowledgeable folks. We thoroughly enjoyed the excursions. We appreciate the included excursions and took many with great experiences. We also took several optional excursions with positive Experiences and good value. In summary, we will definitely sail with Viking again and have booked our next trip. Read Less

we chose this cruise for the amount of ports we were going to visit...they were all spectacular from Barcelona to the french Riviera to Italy's coastline to Croatia and ending in Venice.Viking let us get on the ship right away but we couldn't access our room, which was ready ahead of schedule. we did not go early into Barcelona because the sip was docked in port overnight. The process was very smooth and fast! the ship was beautiful...nicer than any ship we have been on. It was our first time sailing on Viking and I think we have been spoiled. No kids are allowed on board so it was nice and peaceful! the food was above average and their specialty dining was even better! the ship and cabin overall could have been cooler...I found it quite hot everywhere, but the average age of the cruisers were in their late 60s to mid 70s. I found it frustrating on the excursions that people with canes who needed much more than that signed up for demanding walking tours and couldn't keep up since our group was mid forties age to early 50s. But the excursions and ports were amazing despite the people on the ship not being able to navigate the streets and steps very well.It was overall a wonderful cruise and would take another cruise on Viking...they are top notch! We chose Viking because of friends and family that have taken this cruise or a river cruise and shared their experience with us. Our cabin was always clean with excellent service and Ronell took care of our cabin, remembered our names and treated us like family. He is an amazing employee. The dining on the ship is top shelf. The only problem I had was that I could not make a reservation at Manfredi's after our first dinner due to unavailabiity. Entertainment was great. Service on the ship is unbelievable. Everyone went above and beyond to provide us with excellent service. Most of our shore excursions were fantastic. A couple of them could have used some help. This was our first cruise so I'm not sure I have a good basis for judgment on the tours. I like Viking because the cruise ships are smaller than most and because there were no children. We are looking forward to taking a Viking river cruise and hope to have many more unforgettable experiences with Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise primarily for one reason, no young kids, no casinos, no water slides, no discos. Viking is about 1st class cruising without the carnival atmosphere so many of the big ships are into these days. The ship was perfect. Every crew member speaks to you no matter their job or class. The food was excellent and just a wonderful experience in whole. With the smaller ocean ships of Viking you can get into ports that many of the mega ships cannot. We woke up one morning and looked out our window to see Monte Carlo. WOW what a view that left us breathless. Viking has for sure found their niche catering to older adults. We could be walking out on the deck and run upon a crew member doing maintenance. They would always speak to us and that says something about Viking and its training of crew. If you like a circus then maybe another cruise line is best for you. If you like perfection on a ship that is spotless without all the circus atmosphere then Viking is definitely for you as it was for us. Read Less

This was our first cruise and my personal first visit to Europe. We chose this cruise because it gave us just a "taste" of so many different countries traveling the coastlines of Spain, France, Italy, Islands of Greece, Croatia and back to Italy. We also wanted to be among others (adults only!) that wanted a relaxing, enriching cruise exploring culture and history all while enjoying delicious cuisine! We decided to arrive two days ahead of embarkation to allow for any travel issues as well as to acclimate ourselves to the time change. Once ready to embark, we found the staff/service to be extremely accommodating and welcoming. Throughout our cruise embarkation/disembarkation was a breeze. Because of the size of our boat, we were able to dock in the port with a direct gangway. Our cabin was beautifully appointed, comfortable, clean and larger than expected! Love the luxurious feel of all amenities. Dining choices were abundant with more than ample food options everywhere. We never felt like we were eating "mass produced" food. Optional dining (Manfredi's and Chef's Table) were excellent and provided a more intimate atmosphere. We were very happy that we took advantage of making the reservations for those restaurants in advance as they filled up quickly. The crew/entertainment kept us happily entertained throughout the week. It was fun to see our cruise director (Jenna) providing her own cabaret show. All entertainers were fun and clearly showed that they loved their jobs! Lots of activities are available at all times - hard to decide what to do next (or not to do if relaxation was the goal!) We particularly loved all of the relaxation areas, seating alcoves, library, lounges....the layout of the Viking Star was perfect and we never felt like anyplace was crowded! The Spa was beautiful and the staff was excellent. My husband and I both took advantage of the pools, saunas, as well as personal services such as hydrofacials for me and a massage for my husband. We both felt completely pampered and the value was excellent for the service provided. Overall the service on board was amazing and we found all staff members/crew to be approachable, kind and willing to provide the best service to make our cruise the best it could be. We cannot say enough about the level of service and we were thoroughly impressed as to the team approach for this crew/staff. There was no job from top to bottom that seemed to be "below" anyone! It was truly an all hands on deck approach. Outstanding!! The ports/shore excursions were plentiful and led by well qualified partners sharing their knowledge. All excursions were well organized. We selected a lot of the optional tours and enjoyed the smaller groups that participated here. The general "included" tours were a little harder to manage as there was a variety of physical levels/abilities that seemed more difficult to manage in these groups and was more difficult to keep everyone content with pace, etc. We probably overbooked ourselves as we constantly said we wished we had more time on our own to explore! Overall this experience was excellent and we have done nothing but rave about Viking and are already hoping to plan another cruise in the coming year or so. We have referred many friends as well! We look forward to experiencing a River cruise with a smaller number on board with Viking. Read Less

Friends suggested an Ocean Cruise in the Mediterranean. We had not been on an ocean cruise before so we really had no expectation. We had completed two river cruises (one with AMA and one with Viking) and enjoyed the rivers. Viking Ocean was a much bigger ship that I expected, however, it is spacious. Viking designed the ship in such a way that there are various sitting/bar/game areas. You almost never feel overwhelmed by volumes of people except for two nights when there was standing room only in the Star Theatre. Value was excellent. Accommodations were comfortable. Bathroom provided great storage for your toiletries. The staff were friendly and helpful. Unlike the river cruises you rarely meet the ships Captain, Hotel Manager, Cruise Director and Chef. A bit less intimate but I think understandable. Food was good although the buffet gets old. A couple of stops along the route had so many ships in port that the town was over crowded (Monte Carlo, Split, Croatia). Shore excursions were good. We paid for three or four excursions along with the included excursions and all were quite good. The highlights were Croatia (the Falconry and Krka National Park). My only real negative comment is the volume of the music in the Atrium Bar. It was just too loud for before dinner cocktails or game play (we play cribbage so daily we frequented the Atrium Bar to play cards. . Read Less

Had previously gone on a Viking river cruise and had an excellent experience. My husband and I wanted to do an ocean cruise, but also wanted the opportunity to visit places we had never been to. The number of "stops" on our cruise gave us the opportunity to revisit some of our favorite cities in Europe as well as explore some new ones. While the included excursions were interesting, the crowds - which were explained as common when so many ships were in port - made it less appealing and difficult to explore the cities. The excursions that we selected, a wine-tasting in Marseille, cooking class in a Tuscan castle, and the UNESCO site at Herculaneum were excellent. The service on the cruise was excellent. Our room steward, Ronel, went above and beyond to accommodate us. And since I have a medical condition which requires daily injections, I was very impressed by the medical staff who were always available when needed. We did dine in all of the restaurants and enjoyed them all. The "feast" that was served on our day at sea was amazing! And, the entertainment in the evening was great....a nice selection of music and just right the length of time. The only criticism of the cruise was the fire drill while in Barcelona. We sat in our area for an hour waiting for the final passengers to board.... I would recommend the Viking experience highly and without hesitation. Read Less

The 12 night Viking Mediterranean odyssey cruise was our 1st trip to Europe in celebration of our retirements this year. Viking was by far superior to the other 3 cruise lines we’ve previously traveled with. The ship and food were high quality and absolutely amazing. All the complimentary amenities- free excursion in each port, high tea, speciality dining and free wine and beer with meals, free laundry along with no sales pressure anywhere - spa, dining etc - and Viking staff anticipating and responding to our every need and desire - made this a true luxury experience. We would have appreciated the port talks occurring prior to the cut off times to book or change excursions. We’d also have enjoyed more guided tour time and less free time - which seemed to be primarily shopping time. Overall we loved the cruise - and made an onboard deposit for a Viking cruise in the future. Read Less

My sister had never been outside the US and when I went to Barcelona 2 years ago she said to take lots of pictures because that would be the closest she’d ever get to Europe. I said “WHY?!?” She said her husband hates traveling. I said, “You don’t need him to go, I’ll go with you!” And the adventure was on! For 13 glorious days we explored a total of 8 countries and fell in love with every one of them! The Viking Star is luxurious elegance, from the deluxe veranda where I sipped hot tea in the mornings while watching the sun rise, to the multiple dining venues, the Explorer’s Lounge to the infinity pool, and the Spa... Let me just say that Nordic Bathing is my new indulgence! Those Vikings really knew how to pamper themselves! The ports on the Mediterranean Odyssey cruise were amazing, each one so unique that every morning was like Christmas, with a delightful new gift to unwrap and explore each day. Without a doubt, though, the best surprise for me was the staff. From Tejo, who greeted us with a smile every time we entered or left our cabin, and kept it sparkling clean and well stocked with whatever we wanted, to the maitre’d of the Restaurant, who greeted us by name and sat us at a shared table with 6 other delightful voyagers the first night. We all became fast friends and spent most of the rest of the evenings of the cruise laughing and sharing our days’ adventures with each other over delicious meals representing whatever country we had just visited. From start to finish, this was the adventure of a lifetime, shared with my best and oldest friend, my sister.5061 Read Less

Our cabin was large and very comfortable. We spent time on the deck eating, reading and taking pictures! The crew were always helpful and respectful. The entertainment was very enjoyable. Especially enjoyed the Explorers Lounge on the day we spent at sea.We loved that we didn't have a specific time for all our meals and could spend extra time in the ports if we wanted. We loved our two Viking river cruises and had never been on an ocean cruise, so, of course, we chose Viking for our first ocean experience! It was even better than we had hoped it would be! The Star was beautifully decorated and gave us a feeling of peaceful elegance! Our room was so comfortable and the shower was amazing! I didn’t even miss my Sleep Number bed or my tub for bubble baths! The dining options allowed us to dress up for a sit down dinner or be casual after being ashore all day. We really loved the variety provided by the buffet style in the World Cafe! Our room was maintained by friendly, courteous staff who came in numerous times when we were out to straighten up and leave us goodies, as well as the Viking Daily. I saved all of my Viking Dailies for souvenirs because they were so informative and helped us stay organized each day! We learned so much from our guides about each of our onshore excursions. The Quiet Vox is a great way to hear every word so we didn’t miss a thing! The Star was such a smooth way to travel that we couldn’t believe we were moving through the water until we went out on the deck! We are so in love with Viking that we booked another ocean voyage before we even left the Star! Viking is the best! Read Less

We have cruised with Viking in the past, while this was our first Ocean Cruise (Mediterranean) with them. Loved the small ship size, which really helped to not be overwhelmed by what is already over tourism at most European destinations. The Viking Star ship is large enough to provide for perfect sized accommodations with ample room/balcony space, plenty of onboard amenities and a nice smooth ride for Med cruising. There was no issues/ queues for dinning in either the sit down restaurant nor the buffet style restaurants. With two pools and two hot tubs, plus other gathering places, spread the guests out so you did not feel crowded. The smaller ship allows for docking at multiple ports that the larger ships cannot enter or have to tender; this allowed for awesome sail-ins and sail-outs at beautiful ports like Monte Carlo. Viking really provides for all of your needs and most of your wants in its included cruise fair; most included tours are a good start to experiencing each port (while Viking should vet some of the local guides a bit more, one or two were a bit laborious to the point of us bowing out of our included tour early on). The included drinks at meals were most generous, they provide for several added excursions and ample courtesy shuttles from ports to downtown destinations. The house keeping staff was amazing, providing for your every convenience (extra hangers, ice morning and night, extra bottled water, etc), as well as the restaurant staff, very friendly and inviting. The only area we felt was lacking, was the sit down restaurant meals (we primarily participated in the evenings) which did not live up to our expectations. We have had finer meals on other cruise lines (RC) as well as Viking River cruises, while we felt they did step up the game towards the end of the 13 day cruise. We believe they could do a better job of providing better destination meals considering the ports of call we made (Rome, Naples, Corfu, Venice, etc). Read Less

We chose the Mediterranean Odyssey as a mode of travel in order to enjoy sights centered near the ports of call on this particular itinerary. We also selected the Viking cruise line for its reputation of quality as well as the smaller number of passengers on this particular voyage. The timing of the cruise was also meaningful to us as it was in celebration of our 40th wedding anniversary as well as the time of the year weather wise. The entertainment turned out to be a complete surprise as we did not choose Viking with the expectation of being presented with famous singers, comedians, etc. The cruise director and vocalists were superb and the band musicians were outstanding. It was just enough variety after full days of sightseeing. The cruise had a very low key relaxed ambiance. The fact that it was a non smoking ship, no casino with smokers to navigate through was a most welcome pleasure. Viking also engaged excellent local tour guides which added greatly to the enjoyment of the land excursions. Read Less

The adage, you get what you pay for, certainly applies. A wonderful trip visiting a city of Europe almost every day. While it was difficult (though with some outside excursions) to see a city in one day, you get a feel for it and can return if you are so inclined. We were busy almost every single moment. The walking/bus tours were pretty nice especially because of the added devices that let you hear the leaders story, comments, and descriptions of the city. I learned a lot and saw the most famous of the iconic landmarks . Food was wonderful with a themed food every day corresponding with the city visiting. If you wanted a steak, just ask for it. Tasty and so much better than the usual cruise food. Entertainment was a bit of a let down. The same people did different genre of songs each evening, but we were so tired out that it was just fine. The best feature was the wonderful support staff. You developed a rapport with those you see each day and while they may be friendly just to get your tip, I don't think so. They genuinely seemed to care for your welfare. You treated them right, they returned it - double! Loved our Viking trip and truth be told, won't be going on any other ever again!!!! GREAT JOB! The itinerary appealed and I wanted to see what others found special about Viking. It was nice but no better than others that are far less expensive. The ship was pleasant, and the food was good. There was not enough space for clothing in our deluxe veranda cabin. The entertainment was lacking and mostly consisted of the same group of vocalists every night. Daytime programming was practically nonexistent. The included shore excursions were limited in scope and variety, and were scheduled to preclude participation at all if more interesting excursions were purchased. There was far too much “free time” on excursions, which translates to being unexpectedly abandoned in a foreign city without even a map. There was such poor advance communication on what to expect that it was impossible to know how to prepare. Example: the full day excursion to Rome was described as a motor coach tour but we were taken to St. Peter’s square and left for five hours. We were not even informed of the existence of hop on-hop off buses but were simply pointed in the general direction of taxi stands some blocks away. I might try a river cruise with Viking but will probably use a different line for our next ocean cruise. Read Less

This cruise is fantastic! The only thing I could possibly want is a longer trip! Most people who choose Viking are doing so for the cultural enrichment, that being said all rooms above the Veranda include all the same amenities (Nespresso machine in the room, robes, slippers, etc) so we chose to splurge on things off the ship because the service, food and experience on the ship is fantastic regardless of your room category. The only exception is their bottom category Veranda doesn’t have the Nespresso machine, robes etc. One of our favorite things is visiting with the staff and hearing where they’re from. We were consistently told how much they like being part of the Viking team and it shows in the way they treat the guests. One minor disappointment was the included tours didn’t offer as much opportunity as we prefer so we spent almost $3K in extra excursions (which were fantastic and worth it) but we didn’t initially plan on that expense. We did have an opportunity to go inside many of the other cabins and it confirmed to us that we made the right decision to book a lower category room and have extra money for the places we were visiting. Everyone works extremely hard and pleases each and every guest. From our cabin (Deluxe Veranda) 3066, was always immaculately kept, House Keeping, Room Service, Maintenance when I locked our safe incorrectly. Wine Service all top Notch! The shore excursions were fantastic, especially the ones we chose. Unfortunately when we signed up for excursions, 2 were Sold Out, The Helicopter tour over Monaco and the French Riviera and the Gondola tour in Venice. However when we were on board Alonya working at the front desk who had sailed with us on Sun British Isles Trip was unbelievably helpful and got us waitlisted and cleared for both. Amazing Service and Amazing tours. Another familiar face was Hector the Wine Sommelier! He is fabulous and was so accommodating with our wine selections along with Ramon the wine steward. They both made a point to come to our table at dinner every night with recommendations. The Dining options are wonderful, the food amazing and the service again Top Notch, We never waited for anything whether a cocktail poolside, water service on the Aquavit Terrace or in any restaurant. Embarkation and Disembarkation super smooth. Our luggage did not make our connection as we were delayed out of Boston but the crew got it to our cabin before we even arrived. The only slight thing I would mention is that a few of our Ports of Call were not that pretty for the cruise Terminal. Would prefer to Moore off the coast and tender in but I understand all of the logistics in moving all the guests, buses etc. Monaco was Amazing. We just booked New Zealand, Australia and the Great Barrier Reef with Viking for 2020! :) Will never choose any other company than Viking. They do everything extremely Right :) Read Less
