Previously sailed the Grand European River Cruise with Viking but the Danube Waltz Cruise was combined with land tour to Munich and Salzburg and a few different stops and tours made this seem quite fresh. The River portion was so relaxing and comfortable with excellent accommodations and service by the crew. We feel like we really got to see and experience the sites and culture of the areas we visited. The tour guides were exceptional and gave excellent advice when we went off on our own.especilly enjoyed Vienna and Bratislava and our extension in Budapest. Because the weather was nice, we were able to walk back to the ship from the Monastery at Melk and shop in the town. The crew were so friendly and accommodating and got to know us individually. The food was well prepared, fresh, healthy and tasted good, even if the menu was not particularly exciting, there was always something we enjoyed eating. The food, especially the steaks were high quality. We enjoyed our meals and fellow travelers. We felt pampered and appreciated. Read Less

I understand that river cruises have smaller ships and therefore smaller cabins. This was my first river cruise and I can only compare it to Regent Seven Seas, Paul Gauguin, and Carnival. This is not an inexpensive trip and the price per day excluding airfare costs more than RSS and PG but not Carnival. Viking does not come close to RSS in terms of food quality and the quality of the included free excursions. Most free excursions are at most a short bus ride around town and a walking tour. Some were just a tour guide who met you at the dock. Well prepared food but not gourmet quality. Very friendly staff who went the extra mile. Cruise director seemed very friendly and knowledgeable. Unlike ocean cruises one afternoon/evening was spent traveling with a docking in Budapest at 10PM. Seemed like a wasted day to me. I would more than likely not return to Viking. Viking ocean cruises is the top rated line? Must offer a completely different experience. Read Less

My wife and I had visited England, France, and Italy, but had not been on a river cruise and seen any part of Austria, Germany, and Hungary. We were impressed by the care that the cruise staff showed us in making sure that we were comfortable and our needs satisfied. We visited many places we had wanted to see for a long time and felt that our tours of Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest were the highlights of our trip. The excursions were informative and enjoyable. We loved touring the cities, meeting the locals, and learning about their culture and history especially their beautiful abbeys, cathedrals, and castles. We would recommend travelers to Budapest stay an extra day or two to take in all of the sights that city offers. Don't miss the excursion to the horse farm where you will see the Csikos, Hungarian cowboys/girls, in action. Our cabin was clean, the service was outstanding, and the food was delicious and varied. Our coach tour before the cruise included Neuschwanstein Castle, a must-see site. We enjoyed seeing sights along the "Sound of Music" tour out of Salzburg also. Cruising with shore excursions allowed us to view many historical sites with the comfort of "going home" to our cabin each night. The cruising itself was as smooth as silk, with the only rocking sensation we experienced that of the ship turning around to dock in Budapest early on our first day there. Our walking group was assigned by virtue of my husband's slower speed, and it made the excursions very comfortable for him. The day trip to Cesky Krumlov was well worth the bus ride, and our "leisure group" guide, Oli, made sure we could all keep up with the walk. We enjoyed the dining room staff members who unfailingly performed their duties with good humor and accuracy. The entrees each evening provided a wide variety of options while allowing for the "meat and potatoes" preferences of some. Our Program Director was so personable that we felt we had gained another son by the end of the trip. Our Maitre 'D was also a highlight, engaging us and our table mates in conversations and with great humor. Portion sizes in the dining room were exactly right, especially when we were enjoying three meals a day. Our tour of the galley left us appreciating even more how wonderful the food was, considering its compact space. The housekeeping staff and director were very attentive and made certain that we had everything we needed. They even dealt with my husband returning some items to the gift shop after he determined we could use our shipboard credit another way. Our home visit on the outskirts of Bratislava was a wonderful diversion from all of the historical sites. We think our cruisemates missed a great opportunity, since only 5 were along on that side trip, besides our driver and interpreter. Upon returning home and regaling a friend about some new insights we gained, she remarked that, "That is something you wouldn't know if you traveled on your own." Precisely! Read Less

My wife and I booked the river cruise for our honeymoon with neither of us have ever been o a cruise before (ocean or river). We are in early and mid 30's and had no idea that the average age of this cruise would be 65! And we totally loved it! The atmosphere was very upbeat and relaxing. If you're looking for a booze cruise or party boat, stay clear. But if you're looking to have a wonderful, relaxing vacation then we say go with Viking. The entire staff was amazing; from the reception desk to the cleaning crew everybody was ready to help with a smile. The best part of the trip was that we did not have to think about anything. All we had to do was show up for the excursions on time and enjoy. We definitely experienced more on this trip that we would've planning it on our own. We enjoyed all of the tours and learned a lot thanks to all of our local tour guides. The food on the trip was incredible and the chef did an amazing job of offering a variety of main courses throughout the trip. We loved the trip so much that we are already planning our next Viking cruise! Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise as our first real vacation in about 10 years. Needless to say, after completing 2 graduate degrees and completely rebuilding our business in a new location, we were greatly in need of rest and relaxation. Viking and the crew gave us just what we needed and much more! The staff was amazing! They were all so pleasant even when we were so tired we could hardly smile (just the first day because it was a long flight with 2 connections and we missed the second connection because of mechanical problems with the plane, making our journey to the cruise over 36 hours without sleep. Next time we will upgrade our flight arrangements and leave more than 2 hours to catch an international connection.) We were running so late that there was not much time to explore our departure city and all we really wanted to do was sleep, but by the second day, we couldn't help smiling as our local guides were all so positive and passionate about sharing their home with us. We were so grateful that Viking included excursions at every port, allowing us to get to know the territory and the history without us having to do a whole lot of planning. It was all very educational, but in a relaxed manner. It was also nice to know we would be back on board this gorgeous boat for all our meals. The river view is so calming and the food is excellent. It's also nice not to worry about tipping and everything else that goes with eating out. The boat really felt like our home away from home, but kind of like a royal home with amazing service! I loved that cookies and tea were always available when I needed a pick-me-up! I feel terrible that I can't remember the name of our cruise coordinator, but he was amazing when my husband accidently left his cell phone in a bathroom in one of the castles we had just left. He knew just who to call and stayed incredibly calm and we had the phone back before we left port. I simply cannot speak highly enough of this incredible team! Thank you for an amazing vacation! Our past experience with Viking was excellent. The price was comparable to other lines. We like the Viking takes care of us in every aspect from the time we step off the plan to the boarding to return home. The itinerary was well planned giving us enough time to enjoy the ship and the stops and yet not boring. The commentary while traveling through the countryside was very helpful and interesting with history and folklore mixed in. The timing of our entry into Budapest was spectacular. It was such a wonderful surprise. Our cabin was small but adequate. The balcony type window made it possible to get fresh air and see the passing scenery while lying in bed. There was sufficient variety in the menu with a combination of buffet and service. The variety of items was quality rather than quantity. We preferred that. The dinner service was excellent. One evening we returned late to the ship because we had been visiting relatives. When the kitchen staff learned we had not eaten past the dinner hour, they provided a meal for us. The evening entertainment was modest but enjoyable. We are not "night people" so this was fine. The included shore excursions were good and well planned. The local guides and tours contracted were informative, and experienced in pacing the tours. The bus drivers were fabulous in their skill. We had no complaints about any of the arrangements Viking made. We did both the pre cruise and post cruise packages. Both were well worth the time and expense. We were introduced to things we didn't know existed! We love history and art, culture and food. This filled the bill. Read Less
