While I had already been on the Viking cruise on the Rhine, my husband had not. I had been able to convince him to try a Viking river cruise - which we did in March on the Danube - and he thoroughly enjoyed it. So my fifth Viking river cruise was his second. And it did not disappoint! Although the weather in Europe was unusually hot in late July, the boat was always very comfortable. When we stepped onto the boat after our tours, we were often greeted by the staff with refreshing drinks or treats. The members of the staff were all extremely friendly and accommodating, even anticipating when we needed a refill or anything extra before we could ask. We were in the least expensive rooms but do not regret this in the least because our cabin was always immaculately cleaned and was quite comfortable. The bartender, Jules, had an incredible memory - she remembered our names and cabin number after hearing them only once. She remembered what our favorite drinks were, but she also made us some specialty drinks that were outstanding. There were so many choices of food items at all meals, and they were both delicious and attractively presented.
I enjoyed all of the tours that we took. One thing that I noticed in repeating the same cruise is that your experience really does depend upon who the tour guide is. I saw the same places again, but with different tour guides, I saw something new and heard different information during the two cruises. I was very pleased with this because it means that we can repeat the cruises and see something new as well as learn something new with each trip. I also want to commend our program director - he was very entertaining, organized, and helpful. And I have to express thanks to the captain who got us through some very shallow waters quite expertly.
We were on the bottom deck, but we were fine with that. It was clean, well-organized, and comfortable. All the necessities were included and re-stocked often. We tended to get water all over the bathroom floor when we showered, but I think that was probably our own fault. The cabin was not huge, but all we did there was sleep and bathe. There is a window in these rooms but not a balcony like on the other decks, but I think that actually makes the room a little more private. When we wanted to see the views of the river, we went up to the common areas.
