This was our first time on Norwegian and we had an excellent time overall. The Star is a midsized ship that was refurbished and overall it was good. It lacks many of the features of the larger and newer ships that we've been on (no water slides, rock wall, zip line, etc), but we knew that and it wasn't a problem because this was a busy cruise with stops every day.
The food was very good. We ate mostly at the specialty restaurants and the main dining room as opposed to the buffet. The quality of the beverages was also very good (Grey Goose level spirits) and a large selection of beers and wine. The only odd thing was that single malt scotches were very expensive with only one qualifying for the beverage package.
The shows were average to below average compared to what we've seen on Royal and Carnival. Cripton the magician was not very impressive and his shows were very short.
We had a penthouse suite with balcony and it was very nice. There was a large living room with a sofa and chairs that turned into a bed for the kids at night. That room had floor to ceiling windows. This is like a studio as opposed to a true suite, with a curtain that separates the bedroom from the living room. The king size bed was super comfortable and there was a good sized balcony off the bedroom. There was a walk in/through closet that was huge and the bathroom was also very large with two sinks, a normal sized bathtub and a separate shower. The suite had been recently renovated and was in excellent condition. Great stateroom.
