We had a wonderful time on the Joy. The staff were exemplary with our steward Gusti providing us with excellent service. We booked a concierge family suite, 14738, and were delighted with the accommodations. The walk-in closet was the crown jewel of the suite as it allowed us to be completely organized, and having enough storage where everything was quickly available.
We found the food to be very good with special acknowledgment to the staff of the Teppanyaki restaurant. I was amazed at the variety of food in the Garden Cafe, and thought the addition of the Indian cuisine to be a special treat. Of the speciality restaurants, La Cucina, was our least favorite. If you choose this restaurant on the afternoon of the Dawes glacier sighting, please note that the outside seating area has no heat lamps, so bring a blanket! A side note, if you like your steak rare, you must indicate that you wish it "blue" or you will receive a medium rare steak.
We took several excursions. I would highly recommend the Mendenhall Glacier and Salmon Bake. Ours included a stop at the Hatchery, which was not advertised, and was not worth the time! At Icy Strait Point, we took the Whale and Wildlife trip. We got to see both Orca's and a Humpback whale, however, saw zero bears on the wildlife expedition.
EXCELLENT! Loved having the walk-in closest. Our steward, Gusti, was excellent! Even though, you are at the very front of the boat, it was very smooth sailing and very quiet. The room was big enough, allowing us, to have friends join us for cocktails and snacks on our last night of sailing. Periodically, we were treated to plated items upon our arrival back to the ship. And, yes, try room service! It is great for those early morning excursions.
This not to be missed!! The salmon was excellent. Make time to see the waterfall and mining area.
Out tour guide was excellent, but the actual excursion was somewhat disappointing, But it was nice to get out in the wilds of Alaska.
We were picked up by the NCL shuttle and taken directly to the ship. At this point, do not expect too much, if anything, by being on the Concierge level. I don't even know why they hype this as being part of the Concierge package. By including it as part of the Concierge benefits, ones expectations are diminished.
Victoria is a lovely town, and it was nice to be on our own. There is much to see and you can pace yourself. Fisherman's Wharf is a great place to try a wide variety of Oysters on the half-shell. The self-guided tour of Parliament is not to be missed. And, then there is afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel. Before or after tea, take some time to explore the hotel.
