Alaska was the reason. I toss up between Princess and Celebrity. Princess USED to have the edge....good officers, great public rooms, superior entertainment, excellent food.
However, standards have certainly dropped. Celebrity runs rings around the great Princess line now, in my opinion.
Public rooms are fine. But why, oh why is smoking still allowed in the casino?
Theatre seating is lousy. Unlike other Princess cruises, there is no arm attached to the seat to place drinks. Your glass goes under the seat, to be accidently kicked.
And apart from the first and last night, the shows were quite mediocre.
The cruise director??? You never saw her apart from a five minute appearance on formal nights in a slinky dress. She should be around the ship, and highly visible. She wasn't.
The officers? Hardly saw them at all, and when you did, they were not exactly friendly. Hello? As much as they may not like it, the customer pays their wages.
The captain was seen exactly once...at the captain's cocktail party. Even at the first formal night with the traditional champagne tower where the officers were all introduced, the captain did not make an appearance. Disappointing.
Dining? Main dining rooms ok but staff were going through their paces. No one stood out as someone genuinely concerned for their patrons.
The outstanding exception was the Italian speciality restaurant, Sabatinis. Here the maitre'd was professional, and the staff well trained. The food was excellent.
A very worrying observation was that there was no insistance on cleanliness and hand washing when going to restaurants. The Horizon court had no staff members at the entrances insisting on hand cleanliness. Food was handled by passengers and on several occasions I saw food being picked up and then replaced. Dirty and dangerous.
Very disappointed in the suite which cost an arm and a leg. Being right at the front of the ship one presumed there would be a spacious view forward Not a chance. There was a vast bedroom with acres of floor space, a nice king bed, a desk and a disappointing sloping window. Attached was a comfortable sitting room with a narrow balcony. Nice bathroom, good hanging space. Fridge, no coffee making facilities..
