  3. Pride of America
I chose this cruise because I wanted to cruise the Hawaiian Islands. NCL was the only cruise line that offered what I wanted. It looked amazing on paper and it was more than amazing to actually be a passenger on the ship. We started with 3 fantastic days touring Oahu with Polynesian Adventures, a tour company contracted by NCL. Our driver/guide, Kimo was the cream of the crop. We spent one day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, one at the Pearl Harbor (USS Arizona) Memorial and several museums associated with this including the USS Missouri which was a historical adventure all on its own. The third day we were at Kualoa Ranch where many movies of renown were filmed. Then we were dropped at the pier to board the Pride of America. The ship was beautiful and clean, the crew and service were quite extraordinary. The ship was very easy to navigate. The food in the Skyline and the Aloha Cafe' was delicious and especially the Skyline offered many choices to try new things. It did not disappoint. There was a wide variety of shore excursions and every single one of them was interesting and fantastic in it's own way. I had many new experiences and felt awed to be in such beauty. As always, on a programed tour, we always felt we could have had more time at each destination, but adequate time was provided for shopping on shore if the excursion got back soon enough. Our cabin was an outside balcony and it was perfect, especially for the day we sailed past the Na Pali Coast in Kauai. It was our last activity and it was stunningly beautiful to sit on our balcony and view the lovely scenery. I would travel Norwegian again and would definitely go to Hawaii again. Norwegian has the embarkation and disembarkation processes down to a science, everything went very smoothly and did not take much time at all.

Cabin Review

Balcony
Cabin BD 7350
Twin beds very comfortable, plenty of room for two people to unpack belongings from suitcase for the 7 day cruise. Room was quiet, a bit of a walk from mid ship but really very close in proximity to all the main places on the ship. Everything in cabin worked. Balcony was very nice for approaching and leaving the islands and for seeing the Na Pali Coast.

  • Hilo
Out of this world scenery between the active Mauna Loa Volcano and the dormant Mauna Kea. We drove on Saddle Highway in a smaller bus with our driver/guide Michelle who was very knowledgeable about the landscape. We were able to walk on the Mauna Loa lava scapes from 1935, including the lava river. We saw a lava tube and the cinder cones. The excursion ended with a tour of Mauna Loa macademia nut factory with a wonderful gift shop where you can buy just about every Mauna Loa treat. You can also eat lunch there. We had macademia nut ice cream! Michelle took an unfortunate fall in the lava tube on this excursion but she was totally professional, patched herself up and told us she would head to the ER after she was done with the tour.

Polynesian Adventures with tour guide/driver Kimo was fantastic. We learned so much about the island, saw its beauty and learned much about Hawaiian Culture from him.

Disappointing because we could not see the Memorial of the USS Arizone except from afar.

Our guide, Kimo, led us to several of the areas so we could get the most out of the center. The shows for the different Polynesian Cultures were so authentic. Costumes were beautiful. Most of the performers were students at Brigham Young.

Very disappointed that the Memorial was not open a whole year after discovering damage. The day we were there, we could not even take the boat ride out to it, because they were diving to determine the damage. The movie with authenic footage of the actual attack was the best thing about the memorial and they had a nice gift shop.

  • Helicopter Tour
FANTASTIC: ours was called "Heaven and Earth" and started out with the Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tour which was the most awesome and beautiful experience of my life. Pilot Barrett took 5 of us in the helicopter for a 55 minute tour of the entire island of Kauai. We saw so much beauty on this excursion that it is hard to describe. Waimea Canyon, Na Pali Coast close up, the Jurassic Park Waterfall, ocean coral reefs all at 7:30 AM. The pilot turned the copter so that both sides could take photos of the extreme scenic beauty. He narrated the tour and played music which corressponded to the things we were seeing. At the end, we had opportunity to buy a flash drive with our tour recorded on it; it was WELL WORTH the $40 it cost. The land portion of our trip with guide Domi was nearly as sensational as Domi obviously loves his island, his job, and his culture. He drove us all around showing us beautiful beaches, lush mountain scenery, he gave the ladies plumeria to wear in our hair. A picnic lunch was provided and Domi played the Ukelele during it. He was so amazing and informative, I did not want the day to end.

  • Hollywood - Hawaii
Ours was called "Kauai: Director's Cut" and it was fascinating. As we saw various spots, a clip of a movie filmed there was shown by our guide Kaleo. He was a font of knowledge about the movie industry on the islands. Some of the highlighted movies/areas were Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Decendants, Donovan's Reef and Six Days and Seven Nights. Our journey took us to the Kilauea Lighthouse for a beautiful photo opportunity. We stopped in Hanalei for lunch at "Calypso". On the way back we stopped at Opaekaa Falls, one of only a very few accessable waterfalls on the island of Kauai. We were dropped at the pier and were able to take a shuttle to a wonderful shopping area where we sampled "Malasada" (Hawaiian donuts). We did some of our best shopping in Nawiliwili. Fantastic tour, recommend this for everyone. It was in a small bus which always feels more intimate and conversational than a big bus.

This was a relatively new excursion for NCL and it was led by Brett and Aaron, two very experienced hikers and leaders. We took a two hour bus ride to the north side of the island. It was here that we learned that this excursion was for "experienced" hikers. We were not experienced hikers; in fact, I have never really been on a hike except for level ground. It had just rained and the trail was muddy and extremely trecherous on the way down (500 feet) with rocks and logs for footholds. I had tennis shoes on, and obviously this was not the best shoe as the grooves filled with mud and I found myself sliding downwards. I was pretty scared of falling in the mud but then tour guide trainee Aaron helped me down for a large portion of the tour. My travel partner made it down to the first lookout and returned. I did make it down to the black sand beach and it was awesome to sand on the shore of the beach and view the beautiful cliff side and ocean. The hike back up was much much easier but was athletic in itself due to the humidity and the steep terrain. We took a short drive to a picnic area where a nice picnic lunch was provided with sandwiches, snacks, water and fruit juices. The Keokoa Park was so lovely that I stood for a very long time enjoying the views and the surf. Our final stop was the quaint village of Hawi where you could shop, get an ice cream cone or a shaved ice. Once back to the pier there was plenty of time to shop in the wonderful little boutiques right by the pier. It was a very good day.

  • Maui Ocean Center
After a provided lunch we were free to wander the Ocean Center for about two hours. Here we experienced the humpback whale exhibit. We regret we did not see the 3D movie as everyone raved about it afterwards. We did see the hanu (green sea turtles) and the ocean tunnel was fantastic, as we were up close and personal with manta rays, sharks and beautiful tropical fish. The grounds were impeccably clean, and the Center is right by the ocean.

Tram ride around the plantation which included a demonstration on opening a fresh coconut and products derived from it. The tram ride showed a large number of agricultural products especially fruit trees and culminated in a pineapple and strawberry fresh fruit snack at the end.

  • Whale Watching
Simply amazing to be so close to these gigantic mammals. Although we were there in early April, we still saw about a dozen whales including a calf. We did see several breaches and tail slaps. The ship employees were far above the average with a marine biologist commentating on each whale siting and what the whales could be doing. Drinks and snacks are offered aboard. You will not regret this wonderful excursion.
