This was our 17th cruise, with 6 different cruise lines. NCL has become our favorite with 7 cruises, and the last 4 being in NCL suites. Gotten kind of spoiled by them. Platinum Members, and will only be 3 nights short of Platinum Plus, after our Transatlantic in April. Chose this cruise over a year early, because of the extras we received. Booked an aft facing balcony on deck 9. Great location to get on elevator - never had to wait. The theatre was 1 floor down, for reserved balcony seating. The Chinese Restaurant was also on 8th floor and Cagney's was 7th floor, both located at the back of the ship. The suites get to eat breakfast and lunch in Cagney's. Had 4 specialty dinners with package booked, 2 more for being platinum members, and the Hotel Director (Armando) invited us and another couple from Florida, to dine with him in Le Bistro. Ate twice in the Chinese Restaurant, and twice in the main dining room. Had one breakfast in Windows, and one lunch in Windows. Great food in all the restaurants, but our favorite was Le Bistro. On the early port days, we had breakfast delivered. We enjoyed the smaller ship. A lot of the Chinese Statues and other items still on display. It may have been 20 years old, but in great shape. Still have the original Versace carpet in the Atrium. All the crew were so friendly and helpful. Didn't get much rest with only 2 sea gays on the 11 night cruise. But you can rest when you get back home. There was a heat wave going on in Europe, so a little warmer than usual. Seen a lot hotter days in Texas, though. Would love do another cruise on the Spirit, in another part of Europe. The various shows in the Theatre were very good. Kind of geared more to the European crowd, because we didn't recognize a lot of the artists mentioned. Most of the cruisers were from Europe and Australia, with some from Canada and the least from the US. Embarking and disembarking went very smoothly. Stayed at Hotel Traghetto in Civitavecchia. The hotel was right across the street from the free bus transportation to ship. Took about 5 minutes to walk from hotel to bus stop. On our return, we walked back to Hotel Traghetto, and they stored our luggage. We walked around the port shopping and had lunch. Arranged for Civitavecchia Cab to pick us up at hotel, and take us to airport. That was much better than sitting in the airport for 8 hours. Did 2 private tours, 2 NCL tours, and 4 tours with Cruising Excursions. The private tours was a small group and worked well. Cruising Excursions tours were in a large bus, and probably not much different than the NCL Tours. Don't think I would use them again! Booked the 2 tours in Venice both days with NCL. NCL charged $20 R/T to St Mark's Square, where all the private tours started.

Cabin Review

Aft-Facing Penthouse with Large Balcony
Cabin SG 9212
We really enjoyed being in the aft facing suite. "Cons" our butler took good care of us. There is a sliding door between living room and bedroom/bath. "Cons" could drop off breakfast, in the mornings while we were getting ready to go ashore. He brought us afternoon snacks for when we returned. He was always checking in to see if we needed anything at all. Had a small problem with a low battery light in one of the safes, and the Jacuzzi tub was not working. Called Cons to check on them, and there was someone there each time within minutes. This was our 4th cruise in a suite, and "Cons" was the Best Butler we ever had.

  • Corfu
Got to sample all the different types of candy they make from the fruit. Different types of nuts, alcohol drinks made from the fruit - starting at 20% and up. All different kinds of olive oil. Jellies, etc. It was help yourself to the samples, and no pressure to buy anything. Didn't sell water there, but gave me free cups of water to wash the strong drinks down.

  • Mouse Island Walking Tour
Small bus tour. Went on boat out to Mouse Island. Small old church that planes fly over, and is said to look like a mouse from above it. There is another old church that you walk on boat docking area out to it. Sill connected to mainland. Enjoyed this tour.

Save your money, and do it on your own. SE took us up above Dubrovnik on large bus for photo stop, and then back to city for a walking tour. Walking tour inside city walls was crowded and not very interesting. Finished after the 1 hour tour, we had 1 hour to shop, and then meet the bus at a special place to go back to ship. We decided to take a cab back to ship on our own. NCL does not provide free transportation, so it would cost $13 each way from ship. It would be better to take your own cab both ways (up to 4 persons), and walk around top of the city wall (1.2 miles)and see so much more.

Went to the Predjama Castle and then to the Postojna Cave. About 1 hour away from port. Originally booked with Viator, but got a better deal from local Koper Tours, after canceling with Viator and rebooking directly with them. (Same exact tour) Saved $100. Small group in mini bus took us to both places. NCL only went to Cave. Castle built on side of a mountain and a lot of walking uphill. They give you ear phones that explain the different areas of castle. Then to Cave and board small train ride (15 minutes) to go down inside Cave to start tour. A lot of waking up and down on wet surfaces through out large guided tour. Then ride the train back out. The cave was huge and well worth touring. You will need a jacket inside the cave, and they rent them there. It actually snowed in the mountains of this area, 2 days after we were there. Our waiter on the ship was from Slovenia, and was so excited to have snow this early in August. He said it usually snowed starting in November. Glad we got to do the Castle and Cave. A lot of uphill walking both places - but well worth the effort.

  • Blue Grotto Boat Trip
Rode out to look at the Blue Grotto, from above. It was midday and the guide said it was a better view in the morning. Ship didn't dock until pm.

Spent 2 nights in Rome before cruise. Did the Combo Exclusive Catacombs After Closing / Bone Chapel Tours at night. It was cooler and less crowded then. Also, did the Rome In a Day Tour. That made a very long day, first going to the Vatican early morning, lunch break, and then going to the Colosseum for the rest of the afternoon. A lot of walking and climbing steps everywhere on this combined tour. It would be better to split this into 2 days. Both tours were skip the line! Best way to go - because there are long lines waiting to buy tickets.

  • Split Riviera
Big bus drove along water area looking at sights, no stops. Not really very good to see everything from a distance in a moving bus. Sometimes you get lucky it may be on your side, or the bus has to stop because of traffic. Not my idea of a decent tour. Try something else here.

Just took us to Murano and Burano Islands. That's how you get around here. There is a lot of boat traffic. Small boats, ferries carrying cars & large trucks, water taxis, yachts, riverboat cruises, etc.

  • Burano Island
NCL Tour left the cruise ship in a large boat and past St Mark's Square, to Murano Island (45 minutes) where all the kilns are located for the glass making companies. They had to be located away from Venice, because of the danger from fires centuries ago. Got to see a glass blowing demonstration, where a man made a multi colored vase. There are factories where you can buy simple to very elite glass objects. Didn't buy anything here, what we liked was very expensive.
Next stop Burano Island (30 minutes more) where they make lace items by hand. It is a colorful Island with the brightly colored houses. They have a leaning church tower there. Watch where you walk on both Islands, there are canals with over head bridges. You could step off into the canals very easily, if you don't pay attention where you are walking. My wife bought some beautiful lace book marks to take back to her church sewing group. Then hop on boat (90 minutes) back to cruise ship.
