Radiance of the Seas Cruise Review by sonvoltken6

We arrived in Vancouver a day early (it was supposed to be 2 nights early - thanks Delta!).
We enjoyed our time in the city and felt like it would be a cool place to explore with more time. What surprised me most was how easy the embarkation was. If Seattle was utter chaos, including being sent to Uber hell, Vancouver was perhaps the simplest embarkation of any cruise we have taken.
A few thoughts on the cruise. The CD on Radiance is average to bland. The Love and Marriage Game show was pretty lame. The entertainment was OK but not great and they didn't have a good musical guest. The pub entertainer was great, but he really packed the place out! I did find they had some good and unique trivia, which is great.
We had outstanding service and very good food in MDR and Samba (Samba was one of my highlights). But then we found food in the Windjammer was not great, especially at lunch. The variety was not there, and some of the items were not very good. Not that you should judge a cruise by it's pizza but dang the pizza was nasty and so under-cooked that the cheese wasn't melted.
The itinerary was good. I will review ports below. In general, I think they should find an alternative for Icy Point Straight. We were not impressed. Perhaps they should sub it out for Sitka. Or perhaps an overnight in Juneau? The Hubbard Glacier was impressive, though we didn't see any calving.
Disembarkation was great. We took the train through RCCI to Anchorage. That was another highlight - the scenery was outstanding. It was the shortest 4 1/2 hours ever. The only bizarre part was that the train drops you off at the airport, but your luggage is in downtown at the convention center. Fortunately we were renting a car so it wasn't a big deal. We had 2+ days in Anchorage - there is a lot of fun stuff to do if you have a car.

AnchorageNot that anyone asked, but we had a few things that we did that were thoroughly enjoyable. We spent a few hours exploring downtown. We went to the Zoo, which was quite nice, and highly recommended. We also drove North to Thunderbird Falls and hiked out to the waterfall. Pretty cool!View All 70 Anchorage Cruise Port Reviews
We drove south to Girdwood, and took the Tram at Aleyska resort to the top of the mountain. For $39 you get unlimited rides and a $20 meal voucher. Finally we visited the Wildlife Conservation area. It was great to see the animals in the wild, maybe even better than the zoo!

Icy StraitIf you think the created port at Costa Maya is bad, wait till you see Icy Strait. There is a little shopping area and that's it. We thought about the tram but a 2 mile wildlife tram ride was $89 pp. PassView All 281 Icy Strait Cruise Port Reviews

Whale WatchingWe booked the Whale Watching tour, which is provided by Allen Marine. This is the second year in a row we booked their excursion and let me tell you, Allen Marine runs an outstanding operation. We saw probably 12 different whales and had a great time doing it.View All 731 Whale Watching Reviews
KetchikanWe liked Ketchikan. We hired a taxi and explored the area with him. The weather was going downhill when we got back so we didn't explore the town.View All 1,571 Ketchikan Cruise Port Reviews

White Pass Scenic RailwayWe did the train, along with the gold panning and sled dog experience. The train was great - we went up and back. We had a guide from Alaska 360 in our car who really made the trip outstanding. She even serenaded us on the way back down. The gold panning was interesting but of course the highlight was the puppies at the sled dog experience! All in all this was a pricey but wonderful excursion.View All 960 White Pass Scenic Railway Reviews
