I am usually a Royal Caribbean customer, and never do cruises less than 4 days, but my whole family was going and we needed a short weekend cruise, so we wound up on the Carnival Liberty. For most of my family this cruise was about getting to Nassau (where my father grew up). Embarkation was very, very smooth. I was surprised that we no longer had to go up to a counter and have someone check our credit cards and board passes. Instead, we only had to show our boarding pass and passport card and were immediately welcomed onboard. I was impressed when I first walked in. The Flowers Lobby is beautiful. We immediately went to the Lido Buffet. I'm used to the excellent food offered in the Windjammer on Royal Caribbean, so was a little bit let down at the initial lunch offerings. There was the usual prime rib, baked chicken, and fish. But overall the food was very average - like hotel banquet food. The dessert bar was awful. All of the desserts were bland and there was a fly circling around. I was disappointed by the availability of snacks. There was nothing to eat except pizza from 10:30 to 12 or 3:30 to 6. The "Taste Bar" was closed the whole cruise. I ate at the barbecue place once, but never ate at the taco bar (which was closed on the first day) or the burger place. They had a "Chocolate Extravaganza" one day that was underwhelming. I opted for a chocolate pudding which wasn't very good. The dinner in the dining room was average. I tended to just order a bunch of appetizers. Shrimp cocktail was good, but the shrimp were tiny. There was no escargot or Grand Marnier soufflé. Strawberry gazpacho and the cured salmon appetizers were the best. The main courses were nothing exciting. They did have lobster tails which were an upcharge of $20. I opted for this once and wasn't impressed. The lobster tail was overcooked and didn't taste like the fresh lobster I'm used to. As far as entertainment, for me that was pretty much limited to the casino. There was a very limited availability of penny slots, none that I particularly liked. I spent way too much money on the "claw" game that had stacks of cash. I saw many people loose a lot of money in there. It seemed that the machine was weighted in a way that made it impossible to pick up any money. The cash desk only had 1 cashier the entire cruise, even when there was a line of 20 people waiting to cash out. I won a free t-shirt, but no choice of size was given. I played mini golf once, which is fun for kids. But the course is run down and very, very small. It is only 8 holes and at the top of the ship, which means that it is really windy - not great for mini golf. We had bad weather so I never went in any of the pools. We were gone during the royal wedding and I thought there would be a screening or something - but it wasn't even mentioned. The nightclub was cool, but its hours were limited. Most of the day it sat empty. One of my main complaints was that the music was totally wrong for this crowd. They played country music all over the ship for a mostly urban crowd. I would've rather listened to tropical steel drum music than a bunch of country tunes. I was hoping there would be a disco night at the nightclub but that never happened. The souvenir shop was very disappointing. They didn't sell rum cakes anywhere on the ship. I will say that service on this ship was excellent. The housekeeping steward (I think his name was David) was very friendly. Our waiter and assistant waiter were very good. The maître' d (sp?) never came to our table. There was no midnight gala (I'm guessing they only do this on the 4 day cruises, but there was no reason this couldn't have been done on formal night). Overall, this was an OK cruise. I wouldn't do a 3 day cruise again, and will be hesitant to travel on Carnival in the future.

Cabin 4G

The staterooms were a little disappointing. They seem to be a little run down and are in drastic need of updating. The wood was dented and scratched. The whole room just looked old. They had some type of art glass light, which was a little bit tacky, but there was no clear light switch to turn it on. We also could never find the volume knob to turn down the announcements in the cabin. We were also shocked to see that there were no outlets by the night stand to plug in our phones. The only outlet in the whole cabin was on the vanity. The nightstand did not have a drawer, so it was basically useless. The safe could only be opened and locked with a credit card or driver license. This was kind of awkward because I wanted to put all of my cards in the safe. I wish the safe used a 4 digit code like every other cruise I've been on. The bathroom was decent but the toilet was so tiny and at an odd angle.

Nassau

Nassau is a second home to me. My father was born and raised here so we have some family history. We rented cars and drove around. Traffic is a little bit confusing due to lack of street signs but overall not too bad. The weather wasn't great but we did stop and take photos at Fort Montague beach, which was beautiful. We went to the Queen's Staircase which is one of the most beautiful parts of New Providence. I highly recommend it. Another beautiful part is the Eastern District, along Eastern Road. Once you get away from downtown Nassau, you see the natural beauty. We ate at Fish Fry, in a restaurant called Fish Central. We had delicious conch salad (much better than what I make at home with frozen conch), cracked conch, and cracked lobster. Everything tasted so fresh. They even threw in free Bahama Mamas for the whole family. This was my favorite part in Nassau. We of course went to the Straw Market, which is basically all the same crafts throughout - and the salespeople are very pushy. I wound up not buying anything in Nassau.
