My wife and I wanted to celebrate our 55th wedding anniversary by going to Hawaii to escape cold weather without a long airflight. We have taken numerous cruises with Holland America and enjoyed all of them except that we can notice cutbacks in many areas.
First, the good: The staff, in general, was very friendly and helpful, (more on staff heads later). We didn't need much extra, but when I contacted the front desk for minor things, they were very helpful.
The food was excellent with a reasonable number of choices. The exception was that the soups in the Lido were almost all purees that didn't have much taste. The service in the main dining room was sometimes very slow, but they were really working at it (probably a result of staff cutbacks). The staff in the Lido was always ready to help or bring drinks or anything else that was needed.
The stateroom 1068, an interior quad room on the main deck was very good, except that it was below B B King nightclub with drums reverberating into the night. It had a nice arrangement with ample room for two and plenty room between the bed and the closets. The room stewards were excellent, friendly, remembered our names from the first day, and checked many times to see if everything was ok and if we needed anything. The on-demand movies on the in room TV was a welcome new feature.
