We wanted to return to the Southern Caribbean and this ship had the itinerary we were looking for. We have cruised at least a dozen times on various cruise lines and I'm sad to report that this was the worst experience we've had in over 8 years of cruises. We spent a day in San Juan prior to the cruise which was a lovely experience. Embarkation was smooth and quick. The ship is in good condition and offered a wide variety of features that interested us like the ice rink and flow rider. We didn't have any children with us but being big kids ourselves, we wanted to have fun with these things. The food, both in the dining room and the buffet was horrible. It was like eating school cafeteria food. The food was either over cooked or undercooked. My husband's cod fish was served raw in the middle! My medium/rare steak was burned etc. The quality of meat was poor. The lobster was rubbery and truly the worst quality that one can get. The only vegetables served were carrots and broccoli which were mushy. Mashed potatoes with just about everything. Serious lack of spices, flavor and variety. Even the eggs at breakfast were bad. The scrambled eggs weren't even cooked, they were liquidy. It was horrifying. They reran the same 3 movies on an 8 day cruise. Didn't offer blankets or popcorn. Only one movie was for adults. The other two were for children. Movies weren't offered in the staterooms unless you wanted to pay an additional fee for them. We couldn't use the ice rink or flow rider because there were too many children using them. They should have scheduled a few adult only sessions! The nightly activities were few and far between. Again, a lack of variety and quality. We did enjoy the shore excursions and were happy with the ports of call. I would go to these islands again but I wouldn't go on this Royal Caribbean cruise again.

Very Disappointed

Cabin Review

Cabin 8477
Our interior stateroom was very spacious. It is the largest interior stateroom of any ship I have been on. It had a loveseat which was very comfortable and much appreciated so you didn't have to sit in bed to read the newsletter they give you.
The bathroom was a nice size and the glass doors on the shower gave us more room in the shower.
There was plenty of space (drawers, closets etc.) for all of our belongings.

  • Kayaking
This was the Kayak and Snorkel Eco Adventure. We went by air conditioned van to a point in the north of the island where we met our boats to take us to a group of smaller islands to go kayaking. Our guides were informative and funny. They showed us conch and star fish that they found while we kayaked. Safety was top rate especially since there were several young children in the group. After kayaking around the mangrove for a short while, we went to another small island with a nice beach where we spent some time snorkeling. We had the same guide who was terrific. Finally we returned to our original starting point which was a lovely estate with chairs scattered about the grounds where we relaxed and were served delicious home baked banana bread and punch. Our hosts at the estate were very gracious. When our vans arrived we had a nice drive back to the ship. This was a top rate excursion run by very thoughtful and knowledgeable people. I highly recommend it.

  • Barbados
We didn't take an excursion in Barbados. It was a port with the same shops that every other port had. Nothing special.

  • San Juan
We arrived a day early and spent a day walking through Old San Juan. The free tourist trolley was terrific for getting from point A to point B after a full day of walking the hills there. It was a very interesting area and very convenient to the cruise terminal. We did have to take a taxi to the terminal from Old San Juan because it is not within walking distance.

  • Mount Liamuiga Volcano
This was to be a 6 mile hike to see the volcano (3 miles up and 3 miles back). It was more of a mountain climbing expedition than a hike. The "trail" was straight up, in most places more of a large drainage ditch with tall ledges and exposed roots and vines. We're experienced hikers so these obstacles aren't overwhelming in and of themselves. However, our guide expected us to essentially jog up the mountain, constantly scolding us to hurry up because there isn't enough time to stop and take a drink of water. Half of our group didn't make it to the top because of the ridiculous pace that was being set by the guide. We were offered a dried up piece of biscotti at the top and that was all that were offered to eat on our 6 hour excursion. It was awful.

  • St. Lucia
We had a 90 minute van ride through the island on windy, steep roads to get to the botanical gardens. We made a few stops on the way for photos and were accosted at each stop by locals trying to sell us things. When we finally arrived at the gardens we were rushed through to the "baths". We barely were able to see the flowers before being told to hurry up. The "baths" were 3 cement boxes filled with murky water that fit about 10 people. They were gross. So gross in fact that we opted not to go in and chose to explore the gardens on our own instead. Many other people also opted out of the "warm mineral baths" because they were also disgusted at the condition. Our guide was knowledgeable but a bit preachy about his beliefs on natural remedies for illness on the drive. After 40 minutes at the "baths" we left and another 60 minutes got us back to the ship. I definitely don't recommend this excursion.
We were very disappointed in the condition of the baths and at the fact that we were being rushed through everything. We arrived at the ship 2 hours prior to departure. I wish we could have spent some of that 2 hours enjoying ourselves instead of being nagged at.

  • St. Maarten
We have been to St. Maarten before and explored both the Dutch and French sides. Town is an easy walk from the ship and has a nice beach. The shops are nice but it's all the same tourist junk or jewelry that is found in every port.
