We have enjoyed several Holland America cruises, and were our friends who had moved to San Diego invited us to join them. We looked forward to 11 sea days of relaxation and the possibility of playing bridge with other interested players, plus 5 days in 4 Hawaiian islands. (Because of an unexpected tropical storm, we missed Kawaii, but appreciated the captain's keeping us safe. HA adjusted the schedule to add a day in Oahu, provided free telephone calls for those of us who had booked shore excursions with independent agencies, and automatically credited passengers who had booked cancelled excursions through HA -- all very professional).
Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly, with reasonable waits to board and disembark. Disembarkation was unusually fast in the San Diego port,
As noted in the "professional review," the Westerdam is unique in its providing a high ratio of space, relative to a moderate number of passengers. This gives us plenty of room to walk the Promenade deck (3) and upper deck (10) without crowding, or even having to walk up/down stairs while completing a circle (unlike some larger ships).
Our verandah suite (6153) was well designed, albeit "cozy" at 249 sq. ft. including a nice sized verandah with unobstructed views. It was also very quiet, had plenty of storage and closet space, and came with a DVD player (unlike comparably priced cabins on some other cruise lines). The flat screen TVs (at 21" or so) need updating, but were "watchable." Heating and air conditioning worked well and were quiet.
As noted above, our cabin service was outstanding, with two very friendly and efficient cabin stewards who kept the cabin neat and clean (twice a day). They asked if we wanted daily fruit, and brought what we liked, and left evening chocolates and cute towel animals. In short, they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and taken care of.
We stayed at the very pleasant Hampton Inn & Suites, San Diego Downtown, a complimentary shuttle, or a five minutes walk from the cruise terminal (note photo of Westerdam taken from our room). It was also about five minutes walking to the charming "Little Italy" neighborhood, with great restaurants and a nice street scene. We had previously been to the outstanding San Diego Zoo, as well as the charming Seaport Village section. On this occasion, we flew in a day before, and flew home the day we returned from our cruise; so we stayed pretty close to the Hotel, and enjoyed that vicinity.
