Chose this cruise to go to Hawaii without the dreaded experience of airline travel. Roundtrip from San Francisco with port stops in the major Hawaiian Islands. The ship is in major need of repairs, cosmetic and mechanical/electrical. Something was always breaking down or needing repairs while underway often turning common areas into construction zones. Maui was the last port call before returning to the mainland and this is where the problems really got back. Lahaina has no docking facilities so it is necessary to use the ship's tenders to access the shore. Debarkation was delayed due to "security problems". The problem was Princess did not arrange for enough dockside security to allow the harbormaster to allow passengers to go ashore. After a delay of several hours passengers were allowed to go ashore. After a shopping tour of Front Street we attempted to return to the ship. At the tender wharf we were told that no one could return to the ship because there was not enough security to screen returning passengers. After standing in the line for the tenders for 30 minutes a Princess officer came around and told us that no one would be taken back to the ship until at least 1400 hours. Three hours from the announcement and of course it was now raining. The reason given was "Security". There was not enough security to screen returning passengers and additional security officers were having to be flown in from Honolulu. This is not Homeland Security it was a bunch of local minimum wage private security officers. A total joke. So hundreds of passengers stood around in the rain waiting for "security". Princess did have people handing out towels and some umbrellas.

Finally back on board and underway back to San Francisco. The next day we wake up to the ship barely making forward progress and an announcement that the ship sustained damage to the starboard tender platform and the damage was being accessed. According to a friendly steward the damage resulted in water intruding into the hull and flooding the laundry. This resulted in the closing of the water tight bulkheads and pumping out the water. It also resulted in our being unable to send clothes to the laundry for the remained of the cruise. After idling around for most of the day we were advised that the ship was returning to Honolulu at a reduced speed for repairs. We returned to Honolulu at approximately 10 knots. Half speed. We docked two days later and were informed that all passengers would be provided airline passage to their home area. I have some medical issues that make flying very, very uncomfortable but there is no alternative back to the mainland. First we were booked on a flight to Tucson with a layover before a separate flight to San Francisco. After standing in line for 45 minutes at a passenger service counter a very helpful officer agreed to try and get us a direct flight to Oakland. The following day this was thankfully arranged. We got lucky. Other passengers were being routed all over the world to return home.

One the plus side our cabin steward was very good as were most of the dining staff. However, the quality of food on Princess has sorely declined. Most of my meat and seafood dishes from the dining room were overcooked and portions very small. The food was actually better in the buffet.
