We did not have any previous experience traveling in this region. We found the trip very educational and the area was beautiful. The Viking Star was great. The food was wonderful and the lectures and other programs during the cruise really added to the total experience. The only negative thing was stopping in so many ports the stay in several ports like Stockholm, Helsinki etc was too short and it would have been great to see and experience more of the area. We did take advantage of the Iceland pre cruise visit. Which we also found very interesting and well worth the stop. The only shortcoming here is this stop was centered around the capital and it would have been interesting to see more of the island. Perhaps this would have been too hard to fit into a short 3 night stop. We would recommend the Viking Homeland cruise to our friends.
The cabin was very comfortable. Our previous experience with Viking was with the river cruises so this cabin was larger and better laid out. The cabin stewards were very good and extremely friendly. The veranda was adequate but we did not use it as much as we thought because the weather tended to be on the cool side. The ship ride was smooth with the exception of one day the seas were quite rough and the ship had a noticeable roll. In general we like the smaller number of passengers you have on river cruises than on the larger ocean going ships though this was much better than previous Princess cruise.
