My wife and I recently returned from our first Uniworld river cruise from Basel to Amsterdam (12 days). We traveled with my wife’s sister. The itinerary was great with many excursions, which are the real reason to go on a river cruise. The stateroom was small, but well-appointed with a luxurious feel. The food was generally very good and the service was universally excellent. On this cruise, Uniworld included premium liquors along with beer and wine in the price. Since I like a gin martini every evening before dinner, it was nice to get Tanqueray. The bartender made excellent cocktails.
They had local entertainers on three evenings and one speaker who lectured on the Roman empire in the Rhine region. He was excellent. We were told by a couple who had been on other Uniworld cruises, that generally they had more local entertainment. We met many people, particularly at dinner, all of whom were very friendly and well-traveled. I would estimate the age range as mostly 65-75. Everyone was pretty fit; you need to be to handle the excursions although they did have special “slow” walking groups. You are expected to go on the excursions: there aren’t a lot of activities on the ship. My wife and sister-in-law both caught colds and were ship-bound for a few days. My wife knitted to entertain herself.
Uniworld advertised this cruise as “everything included”. In fact, at the end, our bill was $3.00 for mailing 4 postcards. There were no tips or other unexpected expenses. For the two of us, including the cruise, insurance, and economy air fare, the total for the cruise came to $18,000, which we purchased through an online travel site. The only negative, which we complained about, was the wifi, which was weak in the staterooms and non-existent on the sundeck. I assume they will fix this problem. We loved the cruise and hope to take another one with Uniworld.
