Oosterdam Cruise Review by Route6A
- Sail Date: February 2005
- Destination: Mexican Riviera
We booked a Deluxe Veranda Suite on Rotterdam Deck, and it was outstanding in every way...spotless, extremely comfortable beds, an expansive veranda with wonderful furniture, a spacious, well-designed bathroom with two enclosed medicine cabinets at either end of the double sink vanity, a dressing room which can be closed off from the main cabin using a drape, a wall of windows/doors which allow views of the sea, and excellent closets which contain shelves that can be "dropped" to provide shelf storage if you wish.
The entry level suite on SilverSea is prettier, but does not function as well, and the veranda is useless as it is crowded with large furniture, which drops off the small teak deck area. On Celebrity, the veranda is large, but the furniture on the Galaxy was not particularly comfortable and had seen better days. (Note: Do not book a veranda stateroom beside the glass elevators, because passengers on the elevators can gaze right onto your veranda.)
Service aboard the Oosterdam was outstanding. Without exception, the staff were welcoming and helpful, especially so in the Concierge Lounge on Rotterdam Deck, where food lovely food is available most of the day.
Overall, the food is fine, but not outstanding. I do think that the buffet food is superior to Celebrity by far. One can always make a nice salad by visiting the various food stations throughout the Lido Buffet Restaurant. The Lido is open most of the day and also serves limited food quite late. The public rooms are varied in decor, with some rather glitzy and other understated.
There are numerous lovely lounges throughout the ship. The real stars, however, are the outdoor, teak, wrap-around decks, which provide numerous areas to relax on lovely teak, padded, deck chairs. The decks which wrap all the way around the ship provide wonderful space for walking, and we saw many people taking advantage of them on the lovely evenings on board.
Even though the ship was full, there was enough deck space for everyone. It never seemed crowded.
The cruise director was the simply the best. Entertainment was also fine. It's not Las Vegas, but perfectly acceptable. Peter Daems, the cruise director, was a superlative host at the opening and closing of each show.
My son, who is 28, enjoyed this ship more than any other he has experienced. We were surprised at how much we liked Holland America, and have booked another cruise on the Oosterdam for next year. We know we will be able to board at about 11:30AM and may remain in our stateroom the morning we disembark until our group is called. We will even have the option of ordering a hot room service breakfast the day we depart, and it will come hot, because heavy, metal heated servers will be positioned under the china plates. It will also be served on time by a courteous staff member. What a cruise line!
