We traveled from Berlin to Prague on the Astrild. It was our first Viking Cruise and we were so impressed! The shore excursions were interesting and enjoyable. The amount of time spent at each location was sufficient and the accommodations were fine. The crew really made all efforts to ensure that we were served well, and our program director was awesome! The program director was very knowledgeable and helpful. The food was great but there was so much! Many times we ate in the lounge for a light meal instead of eating in the dining area. We liked this option. Even more impressive was that I learned that Viking is a privately held company. It is apparent that the owners take very good care of their employees. They have a philosophy that a happy crew promotes a happy customer. You have to respect that! It works! We will definitely travel again on Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was one which we had not already done. We had a slight disappointment when we had to join the ship at Bad Schandau as the Elbe river was very low. The entire staff of the ship could not have been more attentive to us. The captain Martin Bousa was very visible all the time greeting the passengers when they arrived back after a shore excursion, appearing in the lounge at night etc. I even noticed him carrying the passengers luggage to the coach on departure. The programme Director Claudia Diederix excelled at her job. She was very efficient, could not do enough for you and had an excellent sense of humour. The Hotel and Dining Room managers Stefan and Vladimir were attentive to all the passengers and the chef came round each table most nights for the passengers comments. I would have liked to cruise for several more days instead of just 5 days Read Less

We chose this cruise as our third river experience, all with Viking, because we wanted another taste of reconstructed former Eastern Europe, and we were offered free air fare. We were in great hands from the moment we stepped off the plane until we waved goodbye to come home. The ship, one of Viking's smaller, made for an intimate and very personable voyage downstream to Martin Luther's Wittenberg, and the service was outstanding, from the captain to every member of the crew. The entertainment aboard as well as the excursions that included entertainment were varied and reflected the rich Czech, Bohemian, and German cultures along the Elbe. We enjoyed the days in Prague and the immersion in Berlin's Cold-War history. My only disappointment was the "Prague by Night" excursion -- I had been expecting a pub crawl as we had had in Cologne two years earlier, instead of the panoramic tour we received, seeing the lights of the city from several viewpoints. I certainly plan to cruise Viking again, probably somewhere in Europe. Read Less

This is the perfect cruise for those who want to spend time on land in major cities and still experience a cruise. It began with 3 days at the Prague Hilton with excursions and oversight by our wonderful cruise director, Claudia Diederix. Then a pleasant motor coach ride to embark on our lovely ship and start a leisurely cruise down the Elbe with scenic cruising through Saxon Switzerland and excursions to the Bastei, to Miesen and porcelain making to Wittenberg. Then tours to Prince Franz palace and of Frederick the Great's summer palace and on into Berlin with a egG at the Intercontinental and two days of sightseeing in Berlin. It a great adventure with wonderful service all the way through. All of the others on the cruise as well as the crew spoke English. In each port there were optional tours available as well as on port entertainment, music or lectures dealing with the region we were in or it's history. The top deck of the ship is a sundeck, partly covered which is perfect for walking, lounging, or playing miniature golf. The ship is small, accommodating only 92 guests. Thus it is easy to get to know your fellow travelers as well as to be well cared for by the cruise personnel. All together an excellent experience. Read Less

This trip was first time for many of the stops and we were well pleased with the accommodations and quality of the tours. The cruise director was exceptional in many ways with a masters degree in european history. We were pleasantly surprised that the food quality and other services matched the other river boats we have been on (4 of the long boats). We have used other river cruise lines and Viking is very competitive in price, quality of visits, and ship board amenities. This trip took us into Berlin and Prague for about 3 days each and these great cities were connected by the Elbe River which is smaller than many other rivers thus the smaller ship. We really liked the extended time in Berlin and Prague where we stayed in quality hotels and did day trips in and around the city. Viking was quite visible in the hotels and led many tours of these cities yet we had sufficient time for our personal agenda and the staff helped us with shuttle, taxi and public transportation. We have enjoyed a family cruise offered by Tauck and it was excellent. Viking does not offer that option and the travelers on our ship (like other river cruises we have used) focused on English speakers and middle age and up. I did not notice if the Astrild had an elevator but is just two levels of rooms so there are less steps. I gave this ship a low rating on fitness and recreation since there is no fitness room, no bicycles and no swimming pool/hot tub as are found on other non-Viking ships. There is still walking on the top deck and off boat walking/jogging as the traveler might want. Read Less

Arrived in Berlin and spent 2 nights at the Intercontinental. Lovely hotel, although the bathroom was interesting, there was a huge window above the bathtub so you couldn't leave the light on for a nightlight and there was no nightlight for a very dark room. Also the temp seemed to be set for freezing, thermostat would not work for us. The breakfast buffet was wonderful and plentiful. I was disappointed in our Taste of Berlin tour, we were supposed to go to a very old bakery and never saw it. We did thoroughly enjoy Berlin and would go back to see more. Traveling by coach to Potsdam to Sanssouci Palace was delightful. Afterwards we had a lovely lunch hour to stroll the town. Then on to Worlitz Castle for a gondola ride and tour of the grounds. Our boat was located in Wittenberg, the birthplace of Martin Luther. What a wonderful town. Unfortunately, our ship could not travel up river due to low water so we were coached to our next destinations: Torgau, Mieissen and Dresden. Torgau is a lovely old town with great history and WWII memorials. We discovered some lovely back roads with the nicest "secret" gardens. Then off to Meissen for a great tour of the porcelain factory. Now I understand why it's so acclaimed and priceless. Upon arriving back at our ship we were told that we would be transferring to another ship for the duration of the trip. We were coached to Dresden, what a spectacular city she is. I would gladly spend more time there. We took a side trip to Moritzberg Castle, a "hunting lodge" built on a man made lake. What a lovely place to visit. We also toured a winery and ended with a tour of the Zwinger Palace and the Green Vault. I totally fell in LOVE with Dresden. Our tour guide was very informative and helpful. After return to the ship we were told that enough rain had fallen upstream to allow us to travel by boat through the rest of our trip. Going through Saxon Germany was truly breathtaking. I never knew about this side of Germany. The rock formations are fascinating. Beautiful countryside. We then debarked in Decin for Prague. What can I say about Prague, its truly magnificent and must be seen once in your life. I was disappointed in our tour guide though. She did not take into consideration for those in our group who were not very fast walkers, especially on cobbled streets. It was also quite a long trek from our drop off point to the center of the old city square, which was about a mile up and down steps and a very crowded Charles Bridge. The bridge has some 30 statues and she wouldn't stop and explain any of them or allow us to stop. I once asked her to hold up her placard for those trying catch up to find us and she stated "I'm not the Statue of Liberty." Many of the passengers had canes and were quite worn out reaching the square. We never did get to see the St. Vitus, it was so crowded when we were there. Prague Castle is beautiful. Overall it was lovely wonderful trip. I had been on another Viking cruise the year before and we thoroughly enjoy the service and exceptional food we receive. I would definitely do another and another and another. Read Less

We read and heard wonderful things about Berlin and Prague and were not disappointed. Berlin tour was quite interesting to someone who grew up in the Cold War. Our guide was raised in East Berlin so her insights were especially pertinent. Our guides at every stop were knowledgeable and easy to understand. Prague is amazing, although extremely crowded with summer tourists. On our free day, we enjoyed the complimentary shuttle provided by Viking that took us to the market square at no cost. Viking Astrild is a great small ship. Cruising the Elbe was relaxing and scenic. The crew were top notch, starting with the captain. Very friendly and involved in daily ship activities. Personalized service in all respects. The menu is not as extensive as ocean cruise ships but the food was tasty and reflected the countries we were seeing. Our program director did a fabulous job. He was very knowledgeable of the history and culture of Germany and he Czech Republic. While river cruising does not have a lot of on board activities due to the ship size, the activities provided were well planned. We especially enjoyed our day cruising the souther Elbe and the tour to the Bastei. Read Less

We chose this trip out of Berlin, on the Elbe river because we had spent the previous week in Poznan, Poland with our family. We came back a day before our cruise started and were able to stay at the InterContinental Hotel where our cruise group gathered. Devon our cruise director that we met in Berlin was so gracious and knowledgeable about all aspects of our trip, and the staff members were so accommodating and fun to be around. They thought of everything to make our trip the best my mother and I have ever had. Ella did such a great job keeping our room clean and inviting. The food on board was delicious and we enjoyed the wines and beer with our meals. We even had a German themed dinner, special farewell dinner, and the people we met were great. The shore excursions at our different ports were very interesting and well planned, plus the scenery was beautiful. The tour guides on the coaches were very informative. The thing we liked the most was that my mom could take a more leisurely tour and I could take the walking tours. The entertainment and activities on board were fun. Our days in Prague before we came home were so nice, and Viking provided a shuttle service that went from our Hotel to the main square. It was also comforting to us that we were taken by coach to the airport and everyone was helped to get to the right area before flying home. My mother and I made the best memories, and I am looking forward to taking another cruise with my husband. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to see Prague, which contains an ancestral palace which belonged to our family. The fact that this cruise also stopped in Wittenberg, clinched the deal, since we are Lutheran, and especially interested in the reformation. Between our cruise director, who has a master's degree in German history, and the many tour guides, we were treated to a historical and cultural smorgasbord. It was interesting to have some guides who grew up in West Germany, and some from East Germany, and hear, not only the history, but their personal experiences. We were impressed with all our guides. Also, there were usually choices for each tour. You could pick an all walking tour, bus + walking, or leisurely tour in Dresden, for example. We felt very welcome everywhere we went. We have been on tours where you are overbooked, and didn't feel that way on this tour. They seemed to know exactly when to give us some free time, and anticipate our needs. There was some free time in every port, and optional tours. We started the tour not knowing how to gain access to the palace in Prague, and through the help of our cruise director, were able to secure a private tour with the head curator, and hire a car to take us directly to its door. This was our first Viking river cruise, and we felt the service was very good. The food was excellent, and with our shipboard credit through AAA, we were able to upgrade our wine and include extra after-dinner drinks and a folk dinner outside of Prague. When we first saw the river, we were shocked at how small it was, but we were able to complete 95% of the cruise, and stay in each of the ports. There was a small room on board where you could get fancy or plain hot drinks--loved to get cappuccino every morning, and still or sparkling mineral water any time of day for no extra charge. The other people on our cruise were especially fun to be around, we met so many interesting people. We enjoyed the nighttime concerts and lectures, and especially the music trivia game. It seemed a low-key cruise, with a few smaller towns, and even a national park in Saxon Switzerland, as well as the larger cities of Berlin and Prague. We had a standard cabin, which was great. We heard the window was large for a cruise, and the cabin was super-efficient. We had laundry done, and it was delivered boxed and in tissue paper. Everything went smoothly, and we did not encounter any problems in the scheduling, tours, etc. We were a little confused with how many meals were included, but it turned out all the meals during the cruise, and breakfast in the hotels was always included. We were happy to be able to use our electronics without a converter. The towels were better than any of the towels at our luxury hotels, and even the bed was more comfortable that the beds at either of hotels. Viking meets you at the airport, and sees you off at the other end, even getting boarding passes, so we didn't really even need to think about anything once we arrive. Next time, we want to pick a cruise where we can stay longer on the ship! Read Less

We bought a voucher...so we can't wait for another outstanding experience!! We traveled from Decin to Berlin. When we disembarked to bus to board the ship, it was an ah-ha moment!! We were handed a drink as we boarded and welcomed by the captain. The food was wonderful and we had 3 choices of dining. Either we could go to the buffet(each meal), or be served by our server, from ordering from the menu, or go to the upper deck area for a lighter fare. All areas were fresh and delicious!! We thoroughly enjoyed the bar service(as we bought the extra drink package). We also enjoyed the entertainment of the speakers brought in, and every night having a keyboard player to listen to. Our outside excursions were enjoyable and enlightening. Our Viking guide, Matt, was terrific. He was easy to talk to and listen to. The captain and Doret the crew director were also fun to be around, as we even had dinner with them. The people we met from all different countries were so warm and friendly, we hated to leave!! I spilled a tomato based sauce on a white blouse at dinner one evening and could not remove the stain. I gave the blouse to housekeeping and it was back in my room perfectly cleaned early the next morning. The cabin was cleaned to perfection every morning. Our tour director was absolutely wonderful. Every possible thing that would stress me out about traveling was taken care of. Friends had recommended the Cafe Imperial in Prague to us. I asked Daniella about it and she offered to make reservations for us. She made the reservation and we even were given a window seat. The shore excursions were very well done. We chose this trip because of the itinerary. We have always wanted to see Poland so this seemed like the perfect way to do it. We flew into Berlin and were met by the very attentive Viking representatives. We were taken to the beautiful Berlin Hilton and met there by the very, very wonderful Daniella, the cruise director, who was with us until we left Prague. We spent 3 nights in Berlin, enjoying this vibrant city, then were taken by a lovely motor coach to Wittenberg where we boarded our boat. The five nights on the river were wonderful! The boat was beautiful, the staff very, very attentive, the food to die for and the programs delightful. Every effort was made to see that we had an outstanding trip. We then spent 3 nights in beautiful Prague. The shore excursions in all cities were outstanding and a great value. Daniella left us on the morning that we left for Krakow. Her place was filled by Adrian who was our director until we left for home. Adrian was attentive, knowledgable and respectful of our elderly travel companions who were having some difficulty managing the level of activities on some of the the shore excursions. We enjoyed beautiful Krakow and then traveled to wonderful Warsaw. Both of these cities were amazing!!! The only trouble that we had was in Warsaw at the Sofitel Warsaw Victoria. It was 104 degrees in Warsaw and the hotel's air conditioning had for the most part shut down. It was pretty miserable and there didn't seem to be much concern by the hotel management. All four hotels were definitely luxury hotels with better than average to excellent dining options. It was just this one problem with the AC in Warsaw. Four hotels, one riverboat, multiple motor coach trips, multiple transfers in 16 days and everything went seamlessly. Viking took care of every detail seeing that luggage and transfers and all shore excursions were flawless. I would highly recommend this trip. We had a wonderful time and look forward to another Viking experience. Read Less

The maître' d was always at your service and was seen each night and morning going table to table to see that everyone had what they needed. He even pitched in and helped to clear plates and serve. We had never seen that before. The captain was around and gave a great tour of the controls that ran the ship. We met good friends, had a friendly crew, and a wonderful cruise. We had a great time on this cruise, our 4th with Viking. The crew were fabulous and the extra care we got from the Program director and staff was outstanding. The only concern was that it would have been nice to be on the ship longer and leave out the land stay. We enjoy going place to place and often stay on land on our own. We really like the sailing. I will say that during the land stays the attention to us and our comfort was nice. A hotel in Berlin closer to the city center would have been easier to access the sites that we were interested in seeing. A suggestion of a longer cruise with a couple days on shore would have made us happier. But the port of calls and escorted sightseeing is always good on Viking and this time too it did not disappoint. The tour guides showed their pride in their country and their English was impeccable. The food was fabulous and plentiful and the waitstaff attentive. We can't wait for another trip in the future. Read Less

I especially liked the museum we went to in Dresden filled with treasures and the special rock formations in the "Alps." Potsdam was sobering knowing what history happened there. We spent extra days in Prague before the trip started and afterwards in Berlin where we went to the Holocast Museum, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Topography of Terror. Despite the cold and sometimes rainy weather, the trip was very enjoyable, and there was plenty of water for the ship! Programming on the cruise was expertly handled and maps were always available for the town outings. It was very fun to take an evening walk through one town where we were only staying the night at the port. I might never have seen the towns we stopped at in any other trip and especially liked the personal stories about what it was like to live in the eastern block before unification. Read Less

It was a trip with friends. The service was great, the tours were super and the guides were outstanding. Food and the service were excellent. Viking is my new favorite cruise line. Transfer from the airport to the hotel was painless. Hotel accommodations in Berlin were great. We did our own walking tour on arrival day. Boarding the boat was simple, quick and we were on our way. Each of the stops had a well thought out provided tour. Each of the tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable of the location and the history. Many had lived through times from before the wall came down to now. Their insight was amazing. Prague was a key stop for us. It's an amazing city, but becoming more commercialized, losing some of it's old world flavor. Still a great place to visit. This was our second Viking Cruise. Our first, the Grand European, was spectacular. Since we signed up a little late for this trip (Elegant Elbe) we got one of the last rooms left which was at river level and very tiny but overall it was comfortable. The food on the ship was delicious as ever and we've always enjoyed the free beer and wine with dinner and lunch. Service by the wait staff and housekeepers was outstanding and the staff seemed to enjoy their jobs which always adds to the overall enjoyment of the trip. Our cruise director was a young American man who seemed to know absolutely everything about German and Czech history. This made it very interesting and really added to our understanding of German and Czech life before and after The Berlin Wall came down. This is also true of the tour guides that took us around and told us about their personal experiences under the Soviet Block. My husband, who had recently had a stroke, had a great deal of difficulty walking some of the tours on cobblestones at a very fast pace, sometimes in the dark. Another couple on the ship with walking difficulty had brought a wheelchair and I think they enjoyed the cruise a lot more than we did. I do not recommend this particular cruise to anyone with ambulatory difficulties. Most of the entertainment on the ship was historical lectures which were very interesting but painfully long. Overall, I would recommend the trip if history is your passion and it certainly did make me want to sign up for additional Viking Cruises. But if you want castles and cathedrals and beautiful scenery, I'd send you to the Rhine and Danube instead. Read Less

Friends had told us that Prague was a must see city, and we had always wanted to visit Berlin. The Elegant Elbe seemed a perfect way to combine a history lesson and our desire to leisurely travel. The Astrild was a very new ship and with a maximum capacity of 99 (we only had 79)- was just what we were looking for. Travelling through what had been East Germany and learning through the shore excursions and the enhancement discussions when locals came on board was very rewarding. We are not big "entertainment fans" but the local cultural activities were well done. Our favourite memories are of our Program Director Vikki who was with us on both extensions in Prague and Berlin, she provided great insight to both cities and on our daily excursions. Vikki took pictures of us on our outings - so we have a great USB key of not only the sites we visited but of some of the folks we were travelling with. I also have to give a shout out to Chef Bobby who provided an excellent bill of fare, and willingly made custom breakfast omelettes to set the stage for day. Previous recommendations. But the crew made the journey and experience of a lifetime. This was our 3rd Viking Cruise. The people on board from the Captain down were one of the most engaging and interacting we have seen. Our tour director was with use from the pre trip through our post trip. She was helpful, funny, and so hard working. The food as always was excellent and the staff remembered our names and what we preferred to eat and drink. The shared personal stories when asked that made the trip special. We were all there together. Our room was well appointed and immaculate at all time. The excursions were well thought out. The exception was an extra that we paid for in Prague, the Palace with lunch and concert. The meal was mediocre and the palace itself dark. As for the artwork, not world class and needs a lot of restoration (I guess thus the high price) also the walk up to the palace was too strenuous for some. We almost lost a guest who was having heart problems. We were not warned ahead of time. Would not recommend this to anyone. Not up to Viking standards. The extensions and the cruise was worth every penny. I do believe it is the staff that makes the trip what it is. The one we took to Easten Europe while the cruise was nice the crew was not up to par. We were a little wary after that, but this trip was way way beyond and so we will do another trip. Read Less

Viiking let us know and offered alternatives as well as compensation. We went and were so glad we did. At one point we had to leave the Astrid and be moved to a sister ship at the point where the water was too low. All we had to do was pack. The staff took care of everything else. Even the captain was helping to move us. When we got the the other ship which was exactly like the Astrid everything was exactly in place. Very impressive. The tours were excellent - very informative and excellent guides. The cabins are very comfortable and the food is delicious. This was my fifth trip on Viking. This year I am taking my 6th and have already booked an ocean trip for 2018. Read Less

BEFORE THE TRIP-CALL CENTER ISSUES Viking does not train the call center staff well and I was given wrong, inaccurate information regarding questions and specific travel details. Mistakes were made regarding the flights, trip extension dates, what was/was not included, and important information not shared which has effected what we could and couldn’t see due to "holiday days" in Berlin. After a letter to the CEO and a number of phone calls we were given a ship credit. Viking could not explain why information provided by call center reps was not always correct such as pushing us to leave later in the month because the ship was newer which not the case. This forced us to extend and incurred more expenses. Doubt that we will take another cruise with Viking because of the call centers wrong information and the problems encountered as a result. The call center rep told me that if you extend in Prague that the extension in Berlin was automatic, however that was not correct. Our flights were re-booked with new dates and there was a $200.00 charge which we had to pay. The call center never explained that the return flight was not with Lufthansa but United and had we not found this out ourselves we would have had a serious problem at the airport looking for the wrong gate/terminal. No one at the call center knew that the Semper opera tour was schedule on the tour plan and we purchased tickets online ourselves. No one at Viking was willing to assist us with the hotel extension in Berlin nor give us any booking information. I had to resolve this problem on my own taking four hours of my time with Hilton reservations to book the room for us. This was EXTREMELY difficult for me to do with the cost of phone calls, time on the internet and worry if we'd have a hotel room for the extension period of one night. THE SHIP EXPERIENCE The experience on the ship was WONDERFUL. Ship staff were well trained, the food was good with a nice selection of choices, daily tours were good especially the tour guide in Berlin and everything was well organized. The Concierge on the boat was especially helpful and the Program Director (Brenton) was excellent. Read Less

Just returned from the Elbe Cruise that never went anywhere due to low water levels, but that is not the reason for the one star. Viking is not responsible for low water levels, but their response is shameful. Customers were notified and given the opportunity to cancel just a few days before departure even though the possibility of not being able to sail was strong for some time. For many, like us, who were combining this trip with other travel or business, cancelling and trying to get last minute air tickets and hotel arrangements to Europe was not an option. This turned out to be an extremely expensive motor coach trip as we were herded around in buses for hours every day. We had all of the inconvenience of being on a boat (tiny bathroom, docked away from town center) without any of the convenience and for many the extra walking was quite difficult. Viking's response? A voucher for a discount to be used within a year. In other words, absolutely nothing. When I called to ask for a refund instead of a voucher, I was told it was an "Executive Level Decision" not to give any refunds. I was also told that no one from upper management would be interested in hearing from their customers and that no emails would be read. So, Viking, here is how it should have gone. 1) Offer cancelation OR offer to work with the customer to put them on another cruise, arrange alternate air tickets or hotel rooms. 2) Give some kind of refund, any kind of refund, to customers who decide to stay on the trip. You would have had far fewer cancellations and would have saved money in the long run. The customers would not have been so bitter about the response from Viking while trying to enjoy their truncated vacation. 3) Fall all over the customers who stay; drinks, laundry, Uber or cabs from the dock, anything, everything. This trip alteration without compensation made us feel cheated. 4) Don't ask for tips at the end. Viking should be embarrassed to have their staff stand up and say that Viking does not pay them a living wage and they depend on tips for their salary (of course, these are not the words, but the sentiment). 5) Teach your customer services representatives not to argue with the customers. If Viking had done these things, they would have had happy customers, despite not having been able to travel on the river. Read Less
