Viking River Cruise, Egypt and Egyptologist Amr Shaheen are the perfect combination for a trip of a Life Time! From the time my sister and I landed at the Cairo airport until twelve days later when we left Cairo, Viking was there " twenty-four seven." The Viking Representative met us at the baggage claim area and took our luggage to the motor-coach, escorted us the the beautiful Hotel Sofitel El Gezirah and made sure we were checked in properly. Our room's balcony overlooked the Nile River with a wonderful view of Cairo. We had dinner on the patio facing the Nile at one of the hotel's many restaurants. The next morning we met our Egyptologist and Program Director Amr Shaheen. Little did we know he was going to give us the best and most enjoyable tour of Egypt imaginable. His passion for and knowledge of Ancient Egypt was incredible. He made every site we visited come alive and his humor was priceless. Everyone simply could not stop talking about what a wonderful guide he was. The Egyptians and hotel staff were very friendly and welcomed us back after a decline in tourism for a long period of time. Egypt felt very safe, but Viking always had escorts and security for us at every site. Especially in Cairo, where our first two security guards were especially vigilant. This made for a very relaxed and enjoyable visit. American dollars are widely accepted and actually preferred. Be sure to bring plenty of one dollar bills for tipping. We brought $100.00 in ones and should have brought more. We tipped ship crews, hotel staff and bus drivers with American Dollars. Hotel and Ship Charges were put on a credit card. The ship crew must be in cash only, either American Dollars or Egyptian Pounds. Viking River Cruise is the only way to truly see Egypt.   Read Less

From the minute we stepped off the plane in Budapest, Viking was there to make our travels easy and most of all, fun! The ship was just 2 weeks old, and everything shined! The 2 room suite we had felt luxurious and had every detail covered. Plenty of drawers, closet space, perfect lighting, very comfortable bed and clean as a whistle! When we asked for a seat for the shower, one appeared in just a few hours! And the food- what a variety of the finest ingredients prepared every day in creative and delicious ways. The tours were excellent and they offered a "leisurely" tour which my husband really appreciated since he walks a bit slower these days and often needs to rest. I was so impressed with the small, but important details they had covered, like offering bottled water each time you left the ship for a tour. The entertainment was enriching and reflective of the country we were cruising through. I recommend them highly to everyone I know. Go! You won't be disappointed! Read Less

My wife and I and four friends took the Viking Grand European River Cruise and ALL SIX RATED IT A 10 OUT 10....it was fantastic! Viking had made our airline reservations and our room was ready when we arrived at the Viking Vili Cruise Ship. The ship was almost new (it had only made three trips prior to ours) so it was clean and comfortable. Anyone that has taken a cruise knows the rooms are small, and there were also, but it was well planned and all space utilized. Even though we had three suitcases and two CPAP machines, we had plenty of room for the luggage and all of our clothing. The excursions were well planned with clear, English speaking tour guides. Each city and country we visited was beautiful (I took over 1,800 photos this trip!). The food was excellent as was the service on the ship. The crew was excellent and our Program Director was superior! I'm ready to go again! What a great way to remember our 40th wedding anniversary! Read Less

Beginning this European adventure with a pre-trip to Amsterdam was a great idea. The Viking staff provided an informative walking tour on the first full day in the city. The guide made suggestions of places that we might like to visit, sites that we might like to see, and food that we might enjoy experiencing. Our hotel, The Renaissance, was within close walking distance to many of the suggestions. The Viking staff representatives were also available at the hotel to assist with directions to take a bus to the museum district or to board a train to a nearby town. This was a relaxing 2 1/2 days that allowed us to acclimate to the time change before we boarded the Viking Vili to sail on the Rhine, the Main, and the Danube Rivers on our way to Budapest, Hungary. Have you ever traveled with a staff that always had a smile? Many of the guests on the ship commented about the ship's staff. They either love their jobs, or they put on a very good act! They were always smiling and very willing to talk to the guests and offer any help that was needed. Learning about each port from a qualified English-speaking guide was important and it was well done. Each guide provided unique information about the city we were visiting. Sailing on the rivers was a beautiful experience both day and night. Being able to open the sliding door and take in the sounds, the smells, and the views was so memorable. I enjoyed the movie options late in the evenings that were available in my comfortable cabin. The open seating in the dining room was very nice although after you met some nice people you found yourself often returning to the same grouping of guests. Viking just seemed to think of everything for their guests! Despite some changes that we had to make, they worked hard and happily to provide a wonderful experience for their guests. Yes, it was impressive enough that I have booked another cruise for next summer. Thanks, Viking:) Read Less

We always wanted to do a European river cruise. After reviewing 5 different companies we choose Viking mainly due to price. We did the Amsterdam to Budapest cruise. Remember your paying almost $600 per couple per night for these cruises. The rooms were very nice - no complaints. The food was good but the portion sizes were random. One night your fish order would be a substantial 3" x 6" fillet and the next night it would be 2" x 4". Service on the Vili was excellent. However, because of low water due to drought we switched ships in the Danube canal and did the second half of our trip on the Viking Mimir. The service on this ship was not nearly as good as the Vili. It was noticeably a less attentive - it took longer to get waited on and served, water and wine were not refilled unless you made a request. I was also disappointed in the excursions. While they were nice they were not nearly as exclusive as the marketing people lead you to believe. To me they were on par with what you would get on a bus land tour. We had friends do the same cruise on another line and their excursions seemed to be much more intimate and exclusive. One thing they don't put in the marketing brochures is that for 5 days of this trip, they close the top deck due to bridge height so you are restricted to the inside of the ship or the bow. This is a real bummer and came as a big surprise. For the money paid I would look at alternatives cruise lines or alternative itineraries. Read Less

I thoroughly enjoyed the Grand European River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam from August 20-September 4, 2015. It was very well-paced, the days were well planned without being crammed, and there were a few days on which we didn't have to be up early and could relax a little. The places we visited were great - very picturesque, interesting towns and historic sites. I would have liked another day in Vienna and the surrounding area, maybe instead of Koblenz. I also understand Bratislava is being eliminated from this tour next year, which is very disappointing - my party all loved that city! I hope it's being incorporated into another cruise. The tours were all very good, the highlights for me being Nuremberg and the concert in Vienna. We had very good guides throughout with very fluent English-speaking skills, so they were easy to understand. Although I liked Kinderdijk very much, I was disappointed we didn't have time in Amsterdam. Also, in a few stops, we had too little leisure time for exploring and shopping on our own. The on-board entertainment and lectures were all excellent, and I especially liked the pianist and violinist from Cologne who performed, and the opera singers from Munich and Nuremberg. The lecture on the Netherlands dike system was also very interesting and informative. One thing I particularly liked about Viking was that there was a representative at the airport at the end of our tour, not just at the beginning, who helped with our luggage and directed us to the proper airline desks for check-in. We weren't just dropped off and left to find our own way around the airport. Nice touch! Read Less

The Hotels were great and all of this was arranged by Viking and it was done well. We were on a new boat and everything was in perfect shape. The food was excellent and the waiters were outstanding. We had Lubo as the Excursion director on our boat and he is an asset to the company, very knowledgeable and a wonderful person. The only drawback of the trip for us was we found the 14 day too long. The entertainment was going out each day on the tours which after the first week we found it a bit of overload, one week would have been perfect. Would we do it again, absolutely but only one week. The Grand European River Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest was wonderful. We booked everything through Viking so we were met by a Viking representative at every transfer point and they stayed with us until the transfer was complete. The itinerary and departure information booklet was very helpful. The write-ups on what we would see and do at each port and excursion helped us to plan our free time and choose extra excursions. We followed the tip of packing some of our clothes in each other bags. The booklet had all our travel information in one place. The ship was beautiful . All the crew members gave us excellent service . The food was presented nicely and every thing was delicious. The menu had many choices for each meal. Each night, a special course was offered featuring food from the region we were visiting . They gave us a special dessert to share to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Our program director kept our shore excursions well coordinated with local tour guides, provided small group entertainment on the ship, gave interesting informational talks on what we were seeing and arranged demonstrations of glass blowing and baking. Evening activities included music, interacting with crew in small groups and watching tv in your cabin. Safety is Vikings main concern. We transferred to another ship due to low water. The transfer was very easy. We were able to follow our itinerary of shore excursions by motor coach and meals were provided in local restaurants. In Budapest, Viking changed the train transfer to Prague to a motor coach due to a political situation. At the hotel in Prague, a van was provided to transport us down town for our convenience. Lets start by saying that Viking River Cruises are not cheap. The 14 day Rhine and Danube cruise rounds out at about $1000/day per couple. For that price, you get a well organized cruise. Small but efficient accomodation. Limited space on the ship and bridge inaccessible for aboit half the cruise. Shore excursions involve a lot of walking. The Danube is low on water, so you have to change ship at the middle of the trip. Main complaint is the food. Breakfast and lunch are OK but dinner is not up to par, at least not for the price. If you are not into food, then you are OK, but if you are a gourmet, forget this cruise line. Wine and beer are abundant, but run of the mill stuff. Ordinary table wine. Again, NOT WORTH THE PRICE! The guides were well-prepared, the food and entertainment was terrific, and the new friends we met were very interesting and great companions. The staff did a wonderful job of organizing and directing us, and we felt comfortable and safe throughout the journey. The best thing about the Grand European Tour was the quality of the accommodations, the condition of the ship, and the way we were treated. The weather was variable, but we had a wonderful time every day, and we would love to do it again. The only unexpected event was the requirement that we change ships midway through the tour, but even that was accommodated without anxiety and the crew made it absolutely easy for us to do that. The new ship we moved to was identical except we lost some of our favorite wait staff when that happened. The cities where we docked were all accommodating, and the streets and places we went were safe and fascinating. It was a GREAT vacation trip. Read Less

Arrival day in Amsterdam included a walking tour and much rain, but great taste of the city. The ship was beautiful and well appointed. The crew were always friendly and accommodating. Room was very small, but quite adequate with a wonderful "patio like" window that opened and allowed for enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells along the way. More food than one could possibly eat. Having local guides at all shore excursions was great and allowed for interesting conversations. Due to low water conditions, we had to "trade" ships half way, but other than having to pack our bags, the trade was almost seamless. Viking representatives were at the airport when we arrived, at the hotel during our 2-day extension in Budapest, and at the airport when we left. Our program director, Lubo, was fantastic! Viking took great care of everything! The hotel in Budapest was well located and very comfortable. It was a wonderful trip, especially for a first time to Europe. It would have been nice to have had more "free" time in some of the cities, but I understand the time constraints with such an itinerary. I would say that perhaps this isn't a trip for younger people as, at least on my trip, the clientele's average age appeared to be around 70, and a bit more sedentary than I had anticipated. Entertainment on the ship seemed to be geared towards an older audience as well. Still, a wonderful opportunity to see and visit many cities of Europe. Read Less

Food - delicious; room - Private with a lovely view. We could watch the shore and relax in our room. This was the trip of a lifetime with all details carefully planned. The shore excursions were designed to give the best possible experience in Europe. My favorites: Belvedere museum; Vienna concert (a personal dream since my teen years!) We explored ancient and recent history. We saw art that we had only seen in books. We had a renewed appreciation for travel. (Can't wait for next trip) Our crew: wonderful. Every program onboard was entertaining and educational. Mozart was big on this cruise - heard selections from the Magic Flute twice. Even saw examples of glass blowing from an associate of Chihuly no less!. The tours were exciting and not overly taxing. There was something for everyone from a pub crawl to a formal concert. Wanted to take our first Viking cruise and our travel companions were going to be visiting family in Europe. This was an itinerary that we all liked and were able to coordinate the dates of travel with each other. Embarkation was as easy as get out of the taxi and walk on the ship. We were greeted by cruise director and our luggage was taken. We went to our cabin after a bite to eat. Then the fabulous adventure began. We had a French Balcony room which allowed us to open the sliding door without the balcony for seating. We opted to save money on the cabin and not get a regular balcony. You really are not in your cabin very much. Having been on several ocean cruises I did not miss the hustle and bustle of thousands of travelers. The numerous buffets, big shows and casinos were replaced by relaxing evenings in the lounge listening to music or a cultural presentation of the areas we visited. One suggestion more movies on your movie channels. On a 15 day cruise, sometimes you may want to just retreat to your cabin for a couple of hours. The shore excursions were extremely informative. All of our guides seemed so knowledgable and were passionate with their explanations. Sailing along the river was like traveling through a history book...castles and hamlets just popping up as we rode by. The dining was ok. Not as elaborate and not as many choices as larger ships but meals were generally tasty. Dinner dress was nice casual. Some were a little dressier on the nights described as dressy or not. We thought we would have had more food choices relevant to the countries we visited. Although there was a coffee/tea and cookies station in the afternoon I would suggest more variety in the snack area. Most of the travelers were seniors and there were no children. I would not recommend the cruise for families with smaller children. There are no "kid friendly' activities, no pool. no arcade, no movie theater! Would we do it again? We have already booked our next Viking Cruise for 2017!!! Read Less

This was truly an incredible journey and it turned out to be everything the write-ups said it would be and more. Viking's Egyptian personnel were wonderful, they were on duty 24/7 and made it seem as if they were having the time of their lives just being there for you. Amr Shaheen, the Viking Egyptologist and tour leader was possibly the most knowledgeable, outgoing and personable guides we have ever had the pleasure to travel with. By the end of the second day of the trip, which began at the Sofitel El Ghizarah in Cairo, he established a bond with our group that stayed solid throughout the trip. Friends told us not to go because of the unrest in the Middle East, however due to Viking's security personnel, and Egypt's heightened military presence, we felt safe during the entire journey. We traveled on non-Viking ships, the Mayfair and the Omar Khayham, both ships have recently been refurbished and were clean and comfortable. There are no words to explain the many once in a lifetime moments we experienced, hot air ballooning over the Valley of the Kings, riding a camel into the desert, touring the archeological museum, a trip through the streets of the bazaar in Cairo, staring into the face of the Sphinx, wandering through the temples, learning about cartouches, and on and on until the brain reeled. This is a trip not to be missed. There was one thing that drove me crazy and that was the lack of local cuisine and a fine dining option. The meals were all buffet and although the quality of the food was good, it was pseudo-European/American style, three starches, meats drowned in gravy and heavy on desserts. The cost of the cruise shouldn't have had us dining cafeteria style, with no other options. Middle Eastern grilled meats, appetizers and, soups are excellent and much more suited to the climate than well cooked pot roast in gravy with mashed potatoes. Read Less

We had taken the Romantic Danube Cruise in 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed it. An offer came in the mail about this particular cruise that included hotel time in Budapest and also in Bucharest with air. Budapest had captured our hearts in 2014, so we couldn't pass this one up. Budapest was as enchanting as before. The hotel, Sofitel, I believe, was wonderful. We had a beautiful view of the Chain Bridge and Fisherman's Bastion from our room. The Viking Vili was just across the street and boarding couldn't have been more pleasant. After arriving in Kalocsa, we were treated to an astounding display of horsemanship at a local farm. Hungary has become one of my favorite countries. Our visit to Osijek, Croatia began with a home visit. I was not eager to go traipsing into someone's home, but the young man and his family were so charming and welcoming, that I soon lost my trepidation. The Serbian capital of Belgrade was beautiful and I enjoyed the Kalemegdan Fortress immensely. Cruising through the Iron Gate a pleasant and lovely way to spend the day. The excursion to the Belogradchik rocks made me feel like I was in a fairy tale...amazing. Just as enjoyable were the ruins of the Tsarevets Fortress and the gorgeous interior of the little church in Arbanassi. Our hotel in Bucharest, The Hilton, was luxurious and the location was perfect for venturing our on our own. The service aboard the Vili was without a fault, just as it was when we cruised on the Eistla. We look forward to the same top-notch crew when we cruise on the Kadlin in the spring. Read Less

For my Mother and I this was our first river cruise. We traveled on the Villi from Budapest to Amsterdam. We so enjoyed our trip. The staff on the boat were very nice and helpful. The food was great. The ports and tours all were fun. I was probably one of the youngest on the ship being in my mid 50's. The second we arrived at the ship the wonderful service started. The staff took our luggage and we had lunch and explored the ship as we waited for our cabin. The cabin was small as expected but had enough space for all our things. The cabin was very clean and nicely appointed. There was enough closet space with shelves and drawers to keep all our things organized. The bathrooms heated floors were a nice touch. The food on the ship was fabulous! Every meal had so many choices. There were also choices of where to eat. In the front of the ship was a small informal dining area that you could get all your meals at. This was nice if we wanted to sit outside to enjoy the weather, or just see the country side as we were going by. The main dining room was large and you could pick where to sit. Big windows on both sides of the dinning room made it nice to see out. The food was very good with lots of choices. The wait staff were very accommodating and extremely efficient. We enjoyed the ports and excursions. Every evening there was an itinerary for the next day waiting for us on our beds. For our excursions we were broken up into smaller groups...about 10-12 and assigned a guide. We had audio boxes with ear buds so we could all hear the guides. This was very nice because we could look around while the guide was speaking. The local guides we had were very knowledgeable and easy to understand. A couple of times in the beginning we weren't sure of the time or place to meet back up to get back on the ship, but this was better as the cruise went on. I loved the sun deck (on top), however it was closed a good portion of the trip because of low bridges. This cruise is geared toward less active people. I did find time at some ports to get out and run. Disembarkation went very smoothly. The staff had everything very organized. I would recommend this Trip. The length of the cruise was nice I think a week would be too short. Overall a great experience and can't wait to go on another Viking river cruise and see another part of the world. Read Less

I took a Grand European Cruise from Budapest t Amsterdam on Viking Vili longship in May 2016. I am a well seasoned traveler and covered much of the planet already both on land and on water, so I have something to compare it with including my previous cruise with Viking on Russian rivers. This was a terrific luxurious and enlightening experience, one of the best I have ever had. The comfort of the ship and the level of the service were superb. The staff was extremely friendly and efficient. Somehow, they have been able to remember the passengers' names and their preferences in food and other things. The concierge went out of his way to help with some personal issues not directly related to the cruise. The cook who prepared breakfast to order remembered your favorite choices. The tour director and supporting stuff have developed a highly informative and entertaining program of on-board events. And, of course, the shore excursions in every port made the trip so interesting and memorable. I was impressed when they broadcast/narrated the story of the land we were seeing while just cruising. We were on-board, but we were told a story of what we were seeing around! The ship was extremely well cared for -- clean, beautiful, comfortable. Food and drinks available 24/7. The food in the restaurant and on the deck was delicious, healthy, and beautifully presented. The extra events like "German Night" and Capitan's Dinner were beyond imagination: they served at least 12 kinds of beer at German night not to mention a variety of meats, sausages, pate's, pastries, etc., as well as teaching the passengers how to make real German strudel. We used the walking track and even had a kind of a competition there with other passengers. We also were able to relax on the upper deck when the weather permitted. There were passengers of varying ages and we all mingled quite well. The testament to the quality was that many people purchased vouchers for future cruises with Viking. I'm hooked on Viking Cruises for their outstanding customer service and seamless excursions. The food is always top quality and the ships are well laid out. Our room was efficient with a veranda and was very comfortable for the two weeks onboard. The excursions are always well planned with professional and expert guides in each city. We always do the pre and post extensions because Viking is so good with the hotels they select and with those excursions as well. Our concierge put together a bicycle ride in Austria which was one of the best experiences I have had. It was difficult to leave the staff and friends that you get to know during the time on board. Viking also brought in entertainment from each area we visited like a glass blower from Germany, opera singers from Vienna, and there were always nightly informational gatherings. I can't say enough positives about my experiences with Viking. I'm already planning my 4th sailing with Viking. Read Less
