This was our very first River Boat Cruise. We have done many Ocean cruises and this is much slower, much more relaxing and much more intimate. The crew gets to know you by name and so do a lot of the other passengers. Service is excellent and personal and the prices are much lower than on the ocean cruises. We have a free walking type of excursion each and every day to explore the new location and this was great! Entertainment is limited as there is only room for the same performers for most of the trip. There is some stops where locals are brought on board and that was nice for a change. It is quick and easy to embark and disembark - this was a nice feature. No big lineups. The cruise director was excellent and even helped us set up our own customized side trip. We ended up changing ships due to the water level being too high at part of the River, and the Viking group made it simple and as easy as possible. I found that once I let myself slow down to relax the slower pace of this cruise that I did really enjoy the trip. And it was so nice to explore Countries and Ports that I have never been to. So yes, I would definitely go again. Read Less

We chose this trip for location itinerary price timing Great places visited Great education, daily classes with Stefan which prepared us for following excursion. Super cruise director. Stefan A little disappointment due to water level, forcing ship change. True disappointment, no medical on ship. Wow, hard to believe with the age oft he clientele We really enjoyed the local guides on every excursion. The glass blowing exhibit was great, although we have not received our purchases as of August 30, 5 weeks post disembarkment. The vocal and instrumental entertainment was not very good. We did enjoy the games we played in the evening. Our servers in the dining room tried very hard to learn some signing because we had 5 Deaf people in our group. Great job. We were extremely disappointed that Viking made no effort to supply interpreters for our Deaf companions. In the USA, due to the ADA act, interpreters are supplied when needed. Since no interpreters were supplied my wife, I and our other hearing companion were forced to interpret constantly missing many items throughout the trip. Read Less

We chose this cruise from Budapest to Bucharest because we wanted to visit European countries that we had not visited before. It was FANTASTIC--a MUST DO! We are world travelers and could not have asked for better. We started with the pre-extension which was Prague and we were glad we arrived 2 days before the start date. There was so much to see and do, and it was easy to get around on our own. So we took advantage of seeing things that would not be included in the Viking package. But once we started the package, we were extremely pleased with what we got to see and do. The Palace, lunch, and private chamber concert were so much better than anything we saw that was offered through other tour agencies. And we were very pleased with the World War II tour. The guides for both were outstanding. We were then bussed to Budapest, Hungary traveling through Slovakia. After late afternoon and morning tours, we boarded our ship, the Viking Aegir. Embarkation was smooth and easy. The ship felt like home after watching the videos that Viking had provided; our cabin was perfect. The staff, room steward, waiters, chefs, entertainers, Hotel Manager, Nautical Officer, and Captain were very accommodating and personable, seeing to our every need. But special accolades go to the Program Director, Stefan. He made the cruise special, sharing his life experiences growing up in Croatia and what life was like in the countries we visited. And we would see him each day as he made himself available on the various shore excursions, and we enjoyed his "talks" each night about what we would see the next day. We loved the shore excursions, seeing life as it is today and learning the hardships the people lived through during and after the War as we visited Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. We saw and visited large and small towns, not just the "tourist" places. We saw ancient ruins and modern buildings, we watched Hungarian horsemen and tasted a wide-variety of paprika, we enjoyed a beautiful day on the Danube going through the Iron Gates, and completed our trip in Bucharest. The staff made it so easy each day to leave the ship for shore excursions; giving us port information, water and umbrellas if needed, etc. And each day we returned we were met with warm towels and often a welcoming drink. We learned quickly to take the port information with us when one day a couple went off on their own and "missed the boat." The information allowed them to contact the ship and the couple took a taxi to a location on the river where the boat was able to pick them up. The food was amazing with something for everyone. And, as usual, we ate more than we should have and enjoyed every bite. We celebrated our 48th Wedding Anniversary onboard. We selected "friends" we had met onboard to sit with us, and the staff helped us celebrate with a wonderful meal, and singing to us as they presented us with a fabulous dessert. There were always activities on board; but sometimes we just enjoyed quiet time in our cabin taking a nap. And the top deck--sun-deck--was a wonderful quiet place in the afternoon and evening and especially the day cruising through the Iron Gates. Disembarkation was very easy and efficient. The hotels on both ends of the cruise were top-rated and were close to things to see and do. Would we do it again! Yes, we would love to spend more time on different shore excursions -- but this was our second Viking Cruise, the first being China. Viking has so many interesting cruises, we would more than likely do a different cruise before we would take this one again. **A special hint: We joined the Viking trip after completing a previous tour of 10 days in Russia. So, we had our laundry done at the hotel in Prague. We found out that it would have been half the price if we had waited to have it doneon the ship. Read Less

Have never visited this part of Europe before, so had no idea what to expect. The cruise covered 5 countries, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary. The ship was excellent as with all of the Viking cruises I have traveled on. Dining room food was very well done and the service was great. The excursions and ports were good choices and I learned a lot on this cruise about an area I had no idea was like. The in-home experience in Croatia was great and our host provided a wealth of information we probably never would have gotten anywhere else. The trip ending in Budapest was the right way to go as it was like a culmination of returning to Europe with a grand city for touring and dining. I would definitely recommend this cruise to anyone who has never traveled in this region. The Danube is a really interesting river. Read Less

Aeiger was always spotless. Dining was great and never had a repeat of meals. Of course, you could always order a steak or chicken but no reason to because the food was great just off the menu. Food service was nice and relaxed and plenty of refills on wine, beer, tea, coffee, etc. Good choices of excursions. Easy on and off unlike on a large cruise ship. Each trip includes a wireless device that connects to a microphone that each local guide has. This allows very easy group travel. You no longer have to strain to hear your guide because the guide is in your ear leaving you free to photograph and linger for a couple minutes as the guide moves forward. Evening entertainment was nice, not a big production like on a large cruise ship but certainly intimate. The entertainers will know you by the end of the cruise. Good introduction nightly to your next day's destination. Viking seems to be able to bypass the crowds on the day and evening trips. Private concert in Vienna opera house for Viking guests. VIP entry in castles, museums, vineyards. Price fairly for what you get in return. Exceeded my expectations. I have already booked another cruise with Viking. Read Less

I was invited to go with a group of friends on this my first Viking cruise and was very pleased that I went along. It was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Viking takes care of their guests from embarkation through disembarkation; a Viking representative was there to meet us as we deplaned and then transferred us to the boat. The same was true after the cruise. It was a very relaxing cruise and the all inclusive tours are very educational. I also enjoyed the casualness of the entire cruise. No formal nights to plan for. The food on board was very delicious. I enjoyed the daily food selections of the areas that we visited. It added to the overall experience. It was an adult only cruise which my group appreciated and enjoyed. The entertainment in the evening and the additional presentations on board were very good. I would very definitely take another Viking cruise and look forward to the opportunity! Read Less

This was our second Viking river cruise and it was as amazing as the first. We were impressed with the coordination and orchestration of events starting with being met promptly at the airport. The program director was in full control and activities were just what we expected and came off as planned. Just before he introduced dinner for the evening he would describe the next day's tours and activities. He was very outgoing and funny and you could tell he really loved his job. The boat was great! Our cabin was convenient, clean and quiet. Really enjoyed sitting on the veranda. Staff and crew were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Our waiter in the dining room was very personable, efficient and accommodating. Every meal was served promptly and was varied and delicious -- we always looked forward to our next meal. We booked every shore excursion that we could -- we learned this from our first cruise. The tour guides were very excited to share their knowledge and experience with us and it really added to the enjoyment of the town or city we were in. If you have not gone on a river cruise yet, you don't know what you are missing! This is simply espetacular! This was our second cruise and after the first one we became addicted! We love the ship atmosphere and the food could not be better! Dining offers several options, from a comfortable American menu for those that are not adventurous, to local dishes based on the country you are visiting, which we love! The bar offers the best selections in terms of wine and champagne, top shelf liquors. To buy the beverage package is the way to go! The cabin is very comfortable and quiet, it is cleaned and replenished everyday. The excursions were led by knowledgeable and local tour guides which certainly enriched our experiences! Every evening we were given the program for the next day and an idea of local forecast. The onboard entertainment was also pretty good. A Viking river cruise is a must have experience in a lifetime! This was our third and best cruise with Viking. We traveled with another couple whom we met on our Grand European tour. We made our own arrangements for a pre trip in Bucharest in order to visit Transylvania and the Black Sea. The Viking pre-package was never available to us. For some reason, we were not allowed to utilize the Viking Explorer Society discount on the purchase of our cruise tickets. We did, however, enjoy the post-package in Budapest after the trip. The included and optional excursions were the best yet as was the onboard entertainment. The only difficulty was with the Silver Spirits Package. This being the final cruise of the year, provided a lack of attention in stocking the bar. Favorite brands were depleted and not repurchased. The waiters, bar and housekeeping staff were superb. I would like to offer a special thank you to the chef of preparing watermelon helments to my Canadian friends in honor of the Roughriders game we were able to stream in the Aquavit terrace. Overall, the cruise was beautiful and educational. We look forward to our next Viking experience. Read Less

We enjoyed all of the locations very much, but would have liked to spend more time in most of them! Perhaps we will return, but this was a fantastic introduction to Hungary, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands. We especially enjoyed Budapest, Vienna, and Nuremberg, and Wurzburg. We would have liked to have at least a day in Amsterdam, but we really saw nothing of it because we arrived after dark and left for the airport before sunrise. My husband had never been to Europe, and it was a perfect trip for him because we got to do lots of sight-seeing and he didn't have to worry about not knowing any other languages. Everywhere we went, people spoke excellent English quite willingly. We would love to go on another Viking tour! Read Less

I selected this cruise for the itinerary and timing. Some of the stops were educational in a negative sense -- history has been cruel to them -- but the ship and service were excellent, as were the local tours. I'm glad VIking is investing in the local economy of these areas! The cruise travels "upward" in terms of economic well-being, so the final stop, Budapest, is a good shopping opportunity, as well as an interesting city to tour. I didn't take local currency with me, but I would recommend others do so. Euros and dollars are not enough, and the ship had limited ability to change currency. The cabin was comfortable and the cabin and restaurant service were excellent. Food choices were understandably not as profuse as on the mega-ships, but the were certainly adequate and well-prepared. I would definitely consider another Viking cruise, basing my decision in large part on the availability of special savings. Read Less

Since it was our 50th wedding anniversary, we decided to splurge on a suite for this 15 day cruise. We had an absolutely wonderful time. This was our first river cruise ever, and we will never go back to ocean cruising again on a large ship. The small amount of passengers made it so pleasant. We met some wonderful people from different parts of the country that we are still in touch with. Service was excellent. After only one day the waiters remembered what we like to order, I.e. I always like a glass of ice with my wine, and it was always there for me as soon as I sat down. The guides for our tours were all very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. The motor coaches were first class. We lucked out with wonderful weather the entire trip. My husband enjoyed it as much as I did it, especially since he did not have to drive and could enjoy the scenery. Very nice wines with our meal, and every meal was prepared and served just perfectly. The food was excellent, only the wine selection was lacking a very good wine, even on the Silver service. The Maitre D' Peter Pasko saved the day with some of his personal "stach". The early breakfast on the Aquavit deck is a pleasant morning wake-up with juices and fresh coffee. Also the light snacks are just right for sitting in the open air and marveling at the scenery. The bar and evening entertainment were nice. The piano could use a little more accompaniment, since the same entertainer has to work every night..The off shore trips were nice and very informative with many surprises along the way. We will continue the journey from our last departure city of Budapest on to Amsterdam this year and hope to have wonderful crew as before. Read Less

This is our fifth river cruise with one more scheduled (Douro). Fascinating to hear about the recent conflicts that affected life in the various countries. More the personal tour than just big cathedrals. And that the countries were at war during the last 20 years. Ship and Food were fantastic as always. I would have enjoyed a change in the house wines during the trip. I know you cannot change out for each country like on the Viking Star, but a swap out would have given us a treat. Tours were pretty good, although the heat did cause a few passes on the climbs for stairs and mountains. Bus trips seemed to be significant on this tour. I'm not sure why it seemed so different from the other cruises. I know we have had two hour bus rides before but ??? Entertainment on board was very good. Enjoyed seeing the local dancers and costumes. Hotels were very nice. And at each end of the cruise, we got rained out or sweated out of going to local places. So we ate in the hotels. We chose Viking because of the constant advertizing. We did check out where Viking stands as regards pricing and found it to be above the average price. But we found the price commensurate with the quality. We could not have been more happy with our experience. Viking personnel were everywhere they were needed, at our arrival and departure hotels, at all connections where we could have possibly gotten lost or confused, at the shore excursions. They took great care, and were always cheerful. We've never seem such attention to detail, presentation, cleanliness and genuine cheerfulness. We never experienced any Viking personnel who did not stop what they were doing, look us in the eye, pause, and give us 100% of their attention! Of course, we expected great food and presentation. We were not disappointed. We had three choices of appetizer, main course and deserts. The food was prepared well, very tasty, and presented very attractively. The cabin was exactly as pictured in the online videos. Everything worked, too! Our cabin steward, Desi, was efficient and friendly. She always had our best interests at heart. We never had to worry about having water, clean towels or toiletries, nor the rooms' cleanliness. We particularly liked the twin beds. Although we did not separate them, we liked the fact that when one of us moved or tossed at night, we did not bother the others' sleep. Shore excursions were super, and informative. Of course, the free time could have been longer. But, that comes with the territory, what with seeing all the ports on our cruise. We got so much history that our heads were spinning. But, we did, at least learn of the sites' past, and where to spend our free time. Sonya, our tour director, was superlative!!! She was all things, to all people, at all times. Gave daily briefings, without notes. They were about next days' activity and the history of the area we were going through, or the area for the next day. We had several itinerary changes, but she handled them with accomplished skill. And she never seemed to get frazzled. We got to spend about an hour on the sun deck with the captain. He is a super guy. He told us details of the water situation, which was in question at the time. Again, like all Viking personnel, he acted like we were his sole concern, answering our questions about the ship, the locks, etc. The waitstaff got to know us and our preferences, and, some even learned our names. They were trained and skillful at their jobs, acting like they were working at a restaurant and seeking great tips. We took the opportunity to extend our stay, both before and after. Viking provided a tour in both Amsterdam and Budapest. Both were absolutely great. We got to learn some of the history of both cities, how to navigate the public transportation systems, where to eat and shop. Of course, we got to see many of the highlights of the cities. We would recommend both if finances allow. These tours definitely made our free time more enjoyable, since we knew how to get around, where to eat and drink, as well as find other sites that we wanted to see. Viking River Cruises is not a big ocean cruise ship. Don't expect big Broadway productions. The entertainment was great, with Vency playing on the piano in the afternoons and evenings, in the lounge. We had many enrichment talks on the areas we were going through, from local people. Again, we found them beneficial and very interesting. What can we say about embarkation and disembarkation? From the time that we arrived, we never had to worry about our bags. We were met in Amsterdam by two Viking personnel and escorted to awaiting buses for the journey to the hotel. Our bags were fully handled for us. Disembarkation was very impressive. The different groups of folk, according to their departure times were given different colored luggage tags and specific times to put luggage in the hallway. Each group was taken, separately, to their hotel or airport terminal. Viking has this down to a science. Details: an awning on the gangway at Budapest; silverware impeccably placed; sincere personnel; cabin cleanliness; water and umbrellas for shore excursions; a treat for when we returned from shore excursions, such as a non-alcohol drink, pastries or candies; staff exceeded our expectations; "gentle walking" shore excursions available for the physically limited; walls and public areas washed daily. Viking is now our river cruise company! We will never cruise a river with any other line. Read Less

We got a great value for cruising on Viking. Every aspect of our cruise was outstanding and well organized, including switching ships because of low water on the Danube. Program Manager, Stefan, was more than outstanding, including assisting my wife with her infected finger and getting medical attention for her. The little perks, water given at every port and excursions, welcome back drinks upon our return, maps of the cities and towns visited, free time after excursions created quite an experience. My wife and I have ocean cruised 16 times on various Cruise Lines, many not our choice but selected by the group we're traveling with. This was our first river cruise and one longer than a week. With the small ship we were able to meet those with whom we traveled as well as those not part of our group. I have posted about 2000 photo images of our cruise on my photography website, www.1stimage.com. Select the green zenfolio button to reach 13 galleries of our cruise. Chose the Grand European River Cruise aboard the Viking Aegir from high recommendations from various friends. The ship was lovely, we had a French balcony which was just fine as we spen most of our time either uptop or in the main lounge.m staff were helpful, excellent and attentive service, friendly staff and great food and drink. The only complaint I have is that I am Celiac and as there was myself and 5 other Celiacs aboard, you would think they would have been prepared for us. Since we were aboard for a lengthy cruise, ice cream for dessert got boring. Every time they had special recipes cooked from the area we were in, the Celiacs got NOTHING! On the special farewell dinner, they had pretzels, tons of beer and approx 25 different desserts. Again NOTHING for Celiacs! That was very upsetting to me. Also no gluten free beer, even tho we were told they had 51 varieties! This company brags about being able to handle special diets, however, they were not very accommodating to me. Luckily every port had wonderful selections of cookies and snacks that I found to buy for myself I was disappointed that Viking had not seen fit to do this for the 6 people who paid top dollar. My trip was approx seven thousand dollars and they were notified about the special dietary needs almost a yr ahead- lots of time to prepare! Otherwise, it was a great trip. Read Less

From the minute we were met in the airport, till the last minute when Viking representative walked us to the security check point in the airport on the way home ,we were amazed with the service and how wonderful the organization was and how professional and friendly the people were. The program director Felice was excellent, all the tour guides we had were great. The food on the ship was probably the best food I've ever had on the cruise ship. The passengers on the ship were very friendly and there were people of different ages,majority50-65,but there were a few younger people as well. I was pleasantly surprised with the age diversity, because our last river cruise people were 70+,so this was very nice to meet people of different age groups. Most passengers were from UK and USA. The evening programs were very good, so as a piano man, who played excellent music and created a very nice atmosphere on the ship. The room we had was very small, but had everything we needed, excellent shower, very comfortable bed, and we did not spent a lot of time in the room anyway. The schedule of excursions was pretty busy and we really did not have any free time, because we wanted to explore the beautiful region of Bordeaux and see as much as possible. I just wish we had more free time during the excursions,because30-40 min is not enough to do anything on your own. The accommodations were fine - this is not the class of a luxury cruise or dining - but very nice, well served and varied, and the off ship service was excellent - varied, friendly folks, and delightful settings. The Lower Danube was a sobering experience when you really looked into the infrastructure details - the civil engineering and utility issues they have after 40 years of communism and , tragic in many ways - a slow recovery; but a determined people. Serbia - Bosnia - et al - equally sobering, and not at all a settled matter - the powder keg of the Balkans is still smoldering. Of course, Budapest and Prague - lovely, and fascinating. We chose this cruise because my grandparents were Hungarian immigrants, so this was an opportunity to come to Hungary. My husband and I took the cruise from Budapest to Bucharest, then returned to Budapest after which we spent a few days visiting the towns from which my ancestors came. The cruise was magnificent and was way more than I had anticipated. It was worth every cent we spent on it. Everything about the ship, the itinerary, the places we stayed when on shore, the excursions each time we landed in a new port, and the food was first class. I was most impressed by the emphasis on educating us guests about the countries we visited and the opportunities we had to engage in cultural experiences- all included in our cruise. The leaders of the excursions were usually local people who were knowledgeable and enthusiastic to share their countries with us. The crew on the ship also were enthusiastic, friendly, engaging, knowledgeable, and they obviously loved their jobs. Food and service were outstanding. We had a wonderful time, and we really learned a lot about the people, their history, and their cultures. We are motivated to learn more. I definitely recommend this kind of a cultural experience, and we plan on going on more Viking cruises in the future. Read Less

Thoroughly enjoyed our experience aboard the Viking ship Aegir. All details of the cruise were efficiently organized and executed, including the pre and post (Amsterdam and Budapest) stays.. Staff was very attentive and generally knowledgeable of all aspects of the cruise and tours. If they did not know they quickly found the requested information and updated us. The tours were well thought out and informative. Generally historical in nature with a smattering of "newness", and educational. We have taken 5 cruises and this was by far the best; it was a valuable experience. Our experience was first class all the way. Definitely will take another cruise with Viking. The ships travel and docking was quiet and smooth; many times not even realizing we had departed from the docks. Enjoyed the travel through the locks reaching an elevation from sea level to over 1300 feet - Rhine River to Main River back down to the Danube, and crossing the continental divide in Europe. Basically, we chose this cruise because we liked the itinerary and we had heard great things about Viking. They know how to do luxury! Not only was the cruise terrific but the weather was also. Warm and sunny! So many cities to see and museums and palaces and so much history. Each place we visited was worth seeing. My husband is a history buff and he had a ball (so did I!). The guides for each excursion were top-notch. There were guest speakers on the ship, concerts and more plus a glass making demonstration that was great fun! My heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Viking Aegir who were unfailingly courteous and helpful. There were 4 of us traveling together and we each developed such wonderful relationships with various staff. Regardless of where you cruise, the staff of each ship makes or breaks the cruise. The staff of the Aegir certainly made our cruise! I don't know how they managed to work so hard and still be so much fun. Our thanks to Vinnie for his many kindnesses and thoughtfulness, to Dan (our high-energy the program director), and Gilbert (one of the few bartenders anywhere who knew how to make Rob Roys!) and Tomas and Vlad and every last crew member on the Aegir. Finally: the ship was beautiful and very comfortable. The cabins spacious enough and very well laid out. The bed was really wonderful. I can't use a down pillow (allergies) and the staff changed them all to what I believe was a foam pillow but it was fine. The food was great and menus varied. The entertainment system was great, lots of good music to sit on the veranda and watch the scenery go by. Go, you'll love this cruise! Read Less
