(12:30 p.m. EDT) -- Crystal Cruises has removed Israel port calls from Crystal Serenity's September 20, 2015, itinerary as a result of recent violent unrest.

Crystal said Limassol, Cyprus; and Ashdod and Haifa in Israel, will be replaced by a visit to Santorini, a maiden call on Gozo, an overnight in Malta (Valletta) and a stop at Palermo on the 12-night voyage.

"Our decision to revise next year's Holy Land and Mediterranean itinerary so far in advance is prudent and responsible based upon our early booking patterns," Crystal President Edie Rodriguez said in a statement.

All other previously scheduled ports on the itinerary will remain; they include Istanbul, Kusadasi, Rhodes, Crete, Taormina, Naples and Rome.

Crystal joins at least two other lines that have canceled calls on Israel due to mounting tension. Travel warnings and flight bans have also been issued by the U.S. State Department and Federal Aviation Administration, respectively.
