We are usually very active but my wife has some mobility issues at the moment (herniated disc), so when she was faced with the long walk at the airports we asked for a wheelchair. I mention this only because of the walking of the maze of hallways and levels in order to get on a ship. When we arrived in San Juan for embarkation, we again asked for a wheelchair and immediately were whisked away to board the ship, usually we would say least have to enter the main room, this time we were greeted at curbside and my wife's needs were immediately met. Now before you think we got "special" treatment for how much we have cruised; this was the FIRST time on Royal Caribbean! We were on the ship within 15 minutes.....and to be honest, even if we hadn't had the special treatment because of the wheelchair to get on board ship it wouldn't have taken much longer. When we got on board we were greeted with a pina colada, the drink was good, bot fantastic but good. The reason i mention it is because depending on who took the drink, they would add the rum...so this way children coming on board could also take advantage of the vacation experience from the beginning (virgin pina colada). That was the first time i had seen that;although we do not travel with children, that little detail was extremely cool! The food in the buffet was the usual but again the attention was amazing...but it was embarkation day, surely it couldn't continue...Wrong! It did and I'll talk about that more later. After a Hearty lunch, we went to check our our cabin. My heart sank as I saw the location of our cabin (adjacent to the crews quarters) I assumed that because of where it was the traffic of the crew coming in and out of the door would be very loud, annoying, obtrusive, and sleep depriving. It didn't happen! Now we don't spend a lot of time in our cabin, but we do sleep there and it was an amazing experience some of it due to the peace and quiet afforded to us by the stealthy crew! I was astounded when I saw our cabin, The room was much larger than we are use to, there was actually a sitting area! RCI took the standard cabin and increased the living area, but decreased the bathroom area...the running joke was you could do your business and brush your teeth at the same time! That being said The shower was amazing, the shower curtain is gone; you are encapsulated by the shower (yes a real door) and although at times I had to open the doors to wash my feet; the floor remained dry. Getting back to the main living area. the most important part of the cabin was the bed. Here I have mixed feelings, only because I am 6 foot the bed was very comfortable for both my wife and myself (5 foot) but I couldn't stretch out because of the rounded bottom of the bed. If I wanted to stretch out I would have had to sleep in the middle,. pushing my wife out of the bed and me sleeping where the beds joined. If you don't need to stretch out or vertically challenged the bed is more than comfortable. The ship was very tastefully decorated, I bring this up because I didn't realize how much decor meant to the vacation experience. It just makes sense though; instead of being over stimulated by the decor, we felt very comfortable, and able to pay attention to the cruise experience, rather than the decor. There was live music everywhere, and we decided to "hang out" in the Centrum. The Centrum was smaller than most (even for a comparably sized ship) but that was fine for us it just added to the comfortable atmosphere. The Bartender (not since Dolphin cruise lines our old favorite cruise line the went bankrupt in 1998) have I mentioned the Bartender She (Janet) was outstanding. At first I really didn't think much of it she engaged us in conversation and remembered my wife's name which is also Janet. Nice but easy to remember, no big deal, right...wrong here again We were surprised. Janet not only remembered my wife's name Janet but also remembered mine what we drank and when I bought a drink for my friend she also remembered that the next time (day after) and asked me if I also wanted a coke with that....all of this after ! day!!!! I know what you might be thinking, we drink a lot and that's why she remembered....bot this time our bar tab for the whole cruise is just a fraction of what it use to be....so "hats off" to Janet for the customer service she delivered to us. Speaking of Service, The dining room crew were fantastic Nikolai (our waiter), Ray (our asst waiter) and Sulemon (hope I spelled it right our Head waiter) They new our wants and needs, sometimes before we Knew. made suggestions, were very attentive. I could honestly say if something needed to be done, it was done many times before we even asked and if we did ask it was done immediately. Usually we hardly see the head waiter, not this time, Sulemon was there every night offering his help. I will review the ports of call on the ports of call page. The last thing I will mention is disembarkation They had a special room for those people who needed assistance getting off the ship , and made it known there was such a service to the general passengers... this I had not experienced before and as I said we have cruised multiple times before. All in All the Cruise was a delightful one, I wouldn't hesitate cruising with RCI again. In my opinion they combine a Great cruising experience with Customer service thereby keeping them a step above the competition.
