First time cruising on American Cruise Lines... really didn't know what to expect. This was truly a fantastic cruise that was made memorable because of the experience onboard and ashore. First off, the ports were all really amazing experiences that you would have to 'road-trip' in order to see and do. At our age, we don't have the time or the confidence in getting around in that way. So to be able to see and experience the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, trace Harriet Tubman's footsteps in Cambridge, tour the Smithsonian buildings in DC, etc. ... you can't beat it. Plus, the onboard experience is really remarkable. We had an onboard lecturer named Tim Philips who was really knowledgable and personable. As a former professional tour guide, you can tell Tim knows his stuff! No reading from the laptop computer here. We also had some really interesting and talented guests entertain us, which included impersonators of Frederick Douglass and George Washington, a youth drum corps, a crab picking expert, and some local bands from the different ports we visited. We also had an 'in house' entertainer for a few days during our sea days Matt Macis... a great piano player, wonderful singer, AMAZING dancer! (which was a fun surprise), and personable storyteller. We never encountered the Hotel Manager, but the Cruise Director, Guest Experience Manager and other officers were all very present. The crew gives a lot of effort, but I think some were 'burnt out' as we were cruising towards the end of the season. Still, no complaints there.

The honest truth is that the boat is sort of 'no frills'... the food is fine but not fine dining. The grill on the back deck has some made-to-order options that hold you over if you aren't liking what's offered on the menu. The cabins are also comfortable, but not picturesque. The interior is pleasant, but won't bowl you over in it's ornateness or furnishings. But I think you should go on this cruise for the experiences that the itinerary has to offer.
