We wanted to try a new cruise line and heard about msc. the divina is a beautiful ship with many elegant features.
We had an 11 am boarding time, but for some reason, no one could board until after 2 pm. We finally boarded just before 3 pm.
balcony rooms were a bit smaller but comfortable. my wife noticed that the kleenex dispenser was empty and there were no wash cloths. we asked the room attendant for more. he gave us the wash cloths and stated that he would bring the kleenex to our room but never showed. we called the guest relations desk and could not get anyone to answer the phone. we again asked the room attendant and he stated they would bring them right away. no one showed again. we decided to go to the front desk in person and their answer was that they do not offer kleenex anymore because they are saving on paper waste. they instructed us to use the toilet tissue. what a disappointment.
Safety drill was a joke. everyone met in their locations, not on deck but in lounges. instructions were given over the speaker system but no one could hear or understand due to the loud conversations going on. if their were an emergency, most people would not be sufficiently educated on what to do. final instruction was to contact guest services if you had any questions but remember, they do not answer the phone when they are busy.
We ate at the buffet the first night and there was no shortage of bar service personnel selling drink packages. we purchased an easy package for 469.00 for one person because my wife only drinks water. we were instructed to go to the front desk and have your card updated to reflect the package. we waited over an hour in line to find that the bar was not supposed to only sell one package but should have sold us two packages. i refused the second purchase and they revoked the drink package.
Buffet food was just luke warm. selections were limited but the pizza was excellent.
Our bed in the room was a queen size bed and the mattress was very firm. the bed did not have a top sheet, but a sheet covered blanket.
First three days were at sea and pool area was very crowded. there was one pool ladder that had a broken rung, which was reported right away. it remained out of service the entire cruise with red tape blocking access. the soft ice cream that every cruise line offers on the pool deck was not offered on this ship, but a gelato bar was available at an additional cost. most people were very disappointed.
Dining room food was ok most nights. we started with one waiter who could not handle the work load, so they decided to add an assistant the third night to help out. most nights, the managers assisted to keep everyone happy. we waited 25 minutes to get the dishes cleared and water glasses refilled. after being assured that this would not happen again, they added the second assistant. we also did not have a lobster night, which all ships offer. you could purchase lobster if you choose at an up-charge of 22.00.
Entertainment was not what we were used to. shows were ok, but only lasted about a half hour in the beginning of the cruise and about 45 minutes towards the end. there were no comedians at all. we are used to having too much entertainment and cannot see everything to having to find somewhere to go. msc could really improve on the entertainment.
We had many conversations with others during the trip, some stated that they have been on this boat more than four times. they were in agreement that the quality and service has diminished from previous cruises. one person stated that things have change every time and will not return to msc.
The second to last day, they decided to paint our balcony and hang wet paint signs on the door, which were never removed. i asked when the paint would dry and when we could use the balcony, but never received any real answer. i was told to go ahead and use the balcony, but do not touch the wet paint. i asked to speak to a manager about this, but no one was available. the guest services person assured me that a manager would call, but never did. we did not use the balcony the last two days.
The guest services personnel are trained to say they are so sorry, but can never come up with solutions to correct issues. msc needs to train their people to help people with their problems and find a way to resolve the issue.
When disembarking from the ship, my card was flagged as not paying my on board expenses. i was not allowed to leave the ship until i settled my account. i have been on 5 other cruise lines numerous times, and i have always given a credit card to guarantee my expenses will be paid. what an embarrassment and a waste of time for them and a great inconvenience for us. we will not return to any msc ship.
