Just wanted to let fellow cruisers know of an amazing place near Amber Cove where you can volunteer to spend either half or full day at Dove Missions. Check out their website and trip adviser.
We had such a worthwhile morning spent meeting children from one of the poorest areas around tbe barrio. At the school we played games, crafts and helped them with learning English. Martina and the staff are amazing and make you feel so welcome. You leave with a memory that will last a lifetime.
Back to the cruise itself. I loved joining the' A Band on Ship 'learning to play the ukelele. My husband joined the choir.
We booked our cruise 2 wks before departure so had no choice of cabin. This was our first cruise so have had no experience of other cabins . We loved it, took a nightlite to plug in. Hardly spent any time in cabin. Slept, showered and dressed! Our stewards were outstanding and couldn't have done more for us. Cant remember their names but both from Honduras.
Volunteered for half a day at a charity in Puerto Plata supporting children from the pooresr areas in the barrio. Were picked up from outside Port, shown the areas where the children live and met with very friendly local people. Then back to the Mission School to help with teaching the children English. Extremely worthwhile morning, I would encourage anyone who may be interested in applying via internet prior to their cruise. The guys are doing an amazing and very worthwhile job and we were made to feel so welcome by the children and the staff. A memory to last a lifetime !!
