Sail Date: Nov 2017

We are repeat (Elite loyalty level) Celebrity cruisers. We had sailed the Solstice in the past are were disappointed in the current state of the ship and many areas of service. We had sailed the Baltic in September on the Silhouette (sister ship same class) and were delighted.

Embarkation was a nightmare. The ship had experienced serious back to back Norovirus outbreaks (200+ on the preceding cruise) so thorough preparation for our cruise was important and welcomed. The problem is Celebrity had no solid plan for handling its new crop of passengers in Auckland. It took us 3+ hours after arriving at the designated time.

Total chaos and not one senior person from Celebrity directing traffic. One solid hour of standing on a shuttle bus with a lot of people with disabilities and children inhaling diesel fumes. Good news though....their cleaning and emphasis reduced our cruise to normal levels reported at 2-3 cases!

Cabin Review

Cabin Aqua Class A-1

Clean and well equipped with shower head and toiletries and top notch attendant.

Worn out bed an pillows. Old tired carpet. Deck railings showing age.

Port Reviews

Auckland

Great city....walked on our own. Lovely University of Auckland campus. Nice shopping near port. Nice way to see city is from the observation deck of their casino/hotel tower.

Wellington

The Te Papa/Museum of NZ is close to the end of the shuttle line. We booked a private tour with the museum and were delighted in not only the exhibits but also the architecture of the campus. World class. Lunch on our own at a lovely upscale restaurant, Boulcott Bistro. Nice shopping.

Akaroa

We booked ahead on our own with Black Cat Tours. Half day boat tour of the Bay with lots of dolphin sighting. Very well run boat company. Just a beautiful place. Weather was good so they took us out into the ocean to see seals. Lunch off the main drag at Murphy's. Fish and Chips of Lemon fish served wrapped in newsprint. Order at the counter...share limited space with other travelers...incredible food!!

Dunedin

We booked out own combo Taieri Gorge Railway and half day city tour for way less than the Celebrity offering. Tour company had a busload of us from the terminal. Arrived at the historical train station to learn there were two trains. The first one booked for Celebrity through their tour desk and the second one for independent travelers. To our delight the first train was modern and bland. Our second train was all vintage cars!! What a ball. The first half of the trip up the gorge is nice....the second half is over the top beautiful.. Don't miss this...as good as the Grand Canyon. Not much to see in the town.

Melbourne

Two days to spend here. A really up and coming city. Very friendly and great tram system. View from Eureka tower is great. Walking the waterfront and enjoying food and drink is a great way to enjoy the river. Lovely Botanical garden. Queen Victoria Market nice to see local produce...not much in the way of quality shopping. Went to the suburbs to Armadale...great boutiques....upscale taste of well heeled suburbia. Lunch at Cooper and Milla's. Beautiful breakfast and lunch, Second day we booked two hour lunch on the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. What fun. Vintage railcars serving lunch and dinner while touring the city. Food and service way above expectations.

Tauranga

Arrived by tender and took the free shuttle provided by the town. Water activities are top notch here.

Sydney (Australia)

Wow what an beautiful city. We docked next to the Opera House. Booked tours on our own at the kiosk where the ferry boats run. Package deals are great. We loved the tour of the opera house. Had great fun on the jet boat. Did the full day of hop on hop off. Slow but really wonderful. Make sure you do both loops. Second loop takes you to Bondi Beach. The Gallery of NZ:New South Wales is nice. Currently featuring a well mounted show of Dutch Masters on loan the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam. Stayed over a couple of days in an AirBNB. Geat downtown shopping including the Queen Victoria Building. Superb Botanical garden. Walked everywhere.
