We are Platinum Latitudes members on NCL- we have taken 8 cruises in less than 3 years. We chose this cruise way in advance of any hurricane activity because we wanted to go to a few different destinations. Unfortunately, the cruise was up in the air thanks to some of the devastation caused by the hurricanes. Particularly, San Juan where the cruise was to originate. Up until the last few days, we were unsure if the cruise would even go on..

Since we cruise frequently and try to economize as much as possible, we have no problems having an inside room. Over the last few cruises with balconies, it has come to our attention that as much as they are nice to have, for us balconies are an nice addition, but we do not feel that it is worth the added expense and small usage. NCL has since added the option to bid on upgrades (a la Ebay style) which we have already used. This time we bid on an upgrade to a mini-suite. We bid on the low side without much expectations. We had already paid for a balcony upgrade through our Total Rewards (Caesars) membership at a reduced rate. A few days before the cruise, I got an email asking me to call NCL about our bid. I was informed that all of the mini-suites had been sold...BUT would we accept an upgrade to a Family Suite (Penthouse) for the same amount as our bid- since the Dawn doesn't have a Haven on board, this is about as close as you can get- sleeps 6, a Butler, room about 450 sq. ft, no balcony but floor to ceiling panoramic windows, large TV, changing room with large closets, robes, full tub, separate shower, twin sinks, sofa, sitting area- food and treats brought to us daily from not only the butler, but from the Hotel Manager as well.

We were allowed to have breakfast and or lunch at the Cagney's - Moderno restaurant venue. The dining was excellent... Our upgrades also allowed for 5 nights of the dining plan. Being Platinum also gave us a behind the scenes tour of the stage area, the laundry and the galley. All very unusual to see.
