This was our 11th cruise with Princess and the first on the latest largest ships. First the positives (mostly compared to the earlier Grand, Island and Caribbean etc. classes): The cabins were about the same size but the bathroom was a bit larger and better arranged. The Horizon Court (buffet) is huge (we do mostly breakfast there) - much more room to move around, much bigger selection and easier to find a table. Common areas seem roomier, the theater has good new lighting. The walking/running track has outside fitness machines. Otherwise the positives about on par with the older ships. Mixed: We had only been to St. Kitts once and liked this cruise went there, but before the cruise it changed to Dominica - where we had also only been once. So had a fun chocolate making excursion but missed a return to St. Kitts. The negatives: We always got the big balconies (Deck D) on the older ships and missed that on the Royal. The Deluxe balcony adds a love seat but reduces the amount of dresser space - so we picked the regular balcony instead. Of course the balcony was much smaller than our old really big one but it was sort of OK. Miss the full around the ship Prominade deck. We're walkers and the upper deck track is sort of a substitute but not the same as the full around the ship walk. But I can sort of see how they wanted to convert that deck space into interior space on Deck 7. The ship had a generator problem (odd for a new ship) so we also missed our first visit to Princess Cayes because we had to sail to Ft. Lauderdale at a slower speed. We had formerly sailed the Caribbean out of San Juan, but Princess ended that a few years go. This was our first Sunday departure from Port Everglades and the traffic was horrible getting through the customs gates (in our case the north gate not the one from the airport) - leave yourself extra time before the 4:00 departure. Not a knock on Princess just a general warning.

Cabin Review

Balcony
Cabin BB
Well arranged. Good closet space. Good bathroom design (better than prior class ships except for Island and Coral - which are also better than other ships). Smallish balcony (we always got the big balcony on the older ships - that doesn't exist on the new ones). Great new on-demand movies on the new wall mounted HD TVs. AC control seems to be improved. Otherwise about the same as the older ships - similar good bed, plenty of dresser drawer space, etc.

Rode into countryside up a mountain to a historic chocolate plantation. Saw all the steps in preparing the beans and participated in making some chocolates. Great guides and experience.
