  3. Nieuw Amsterdam
We sailed on the Nieuw Amsterdam for 3 weeks beginning November 22. It was a B2B2B consisting of Eastern, Western, Eastern Caribbean. The first and third weeks were exactly the same itinerary. This cruise was all about relaxing for us. We had been to all the ports before, and had basically done a similar cruise last year. The embarkation went smoothly. There was a long line to check in at around noon, but it moved fairly quickly. When we embarked we went straight to our cabin to drop off our carry-ons and we were shocked to see our checked bags were already in our cabin. A nice start to the cruise! Our cabin was a balcony on deck 5 near the back. It was nice and comfortable - typical balcony cabin. Our stewards were great and kept us well looked after. We liked the interactive TV with the many choices of shows and movies. The ship is in good repair. We noticed a few changes since our previous cruise on the N.A. last fall. There are new carpets in the MDR and the elevator lobbies. There is a kiosk to print out your own cruise account in the area near the passenger service desk. New china in the Pinnacle Grill. No specialty salts in the Pinnacle grill. Different menu in the Canaletto, etc. The entertainment was very good in our opinion. The cruise director Mario was a pleasant guy and there were always lots of activities listed in the daily planner. The food is overall quite good with a few misses. We found the beef in the MDR to be tough at times. Cruise ship sushi is never good in our opinion. The buffet sushi was not great and the Tamarind's was only a bit better. The desserts in the buffet are just okay. Our biggest complaint was the variety of foods in the buffet at dinner. We found it repetitive. And sometimes the choices didn't seem to go together. Such as on the night they had roast turkey there was rice or stuffed baked potatoes. We would have liked mashed to go with the gravy. Or the night the only choices of vegetables on the buffet were eggplant and curried mixed vegetables. There are lots of people who might not be fond of either choice ( we liked them both). Overall these are small complaints and believe me we never went hungry. We dined in the Pinnacle Grill once, three times in the Tamarind and twice in the Canaletto and enjoyed them all. We bought the Admiral wine package and enjoyed the wines we chose. With the 3 star discount the price per bottle is reasonable - comparable to what we would spend at a restaurant at home. The Dive-In is great for burgers and fries and we loved the pizza from the pizza place on the aft deck of Lido. We found the service this cruise to be excellent. Our stewards were wonderful. The staff everywhere was welcoming and friendly. It amazed us that the waiters remembered our names and greeted us by name whenever or wherever we saw them. (we were anytime dining so at a different table each night in the MDR) We took a chance and booked an earlier flight home out of FLL (10:30 am). We did the walk off disembarkation and it worked well. We disembarked at around 7:30 and we were checked in at the airport by 8:00 am. This cruise was all about relaxing for us. We had a great time and at the end of three weeks we still didn't want to go home. To us, that is a sign of a good vacation!

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Stingray Swim
We did this last year and loved it so much we wanted to do it again.
A smaller boat takes you out to a sandbar, out in the middle of the sea, about 35 minutes from the shore. The water in this area is only about 3-4 feet deep. You get out of the boat and stand on the sandbar and the wild stingrays come swimming in all around you. Hundreds of them. They are very docile and allow you to touch and pet them. The guides bring squid pieces so that you can feed the rays. It is a fun excursion and I would do it again.
