Normally, we do our own air, but this time we had Viking take care of all of the arrangements. They did a very good job finding us a direct flight and having people meet us for further transportation. We extended our trip with the pre-cruise London package. Although the rooms of the hotel (Radisson Blu near Oxford St) were very small, the location was great, the service people were very helpful, and the breakfast buffet was delicious. The only disappointment was that we really only had one and one half days in London instead of three because of how our flights were scheduled. The cruise itself was wonderful with some minor exceptions. First, some of the positives: the ship is beautiful with tasteful decor. The staterooms are very comfortable (especially the beds) and the bathrooms are roomy--we even had heated floors! Our room steward was great and replenished items as needed. He even left us some cold cuts and fruit in the room on the night we came in late from the ballet in St. Petersburg. Most of the servers were very good and friendly. Some had very limited English, but it all worked out. There were multiple restaurants and the food was very good. Our least favorite was the Chef's Table specialty restaurant, which seemed a little over the top in an effort to be very trendy in their food preparation. The on board entertainment was fun. Outstanding lectures included the one on Fabrege, Russian lacquer boxes, Rasputin and the Romanov family. The areas for improvement include: some of the lecturers were quite dry and need to be replaced, some of the tour guides need further training, although some, like Helen in St. Petersburg and some of the included tour guides were excellent. I would also include some entertainment in the separate bar that was a bit more up-to-date. All-in-all, a memorable vacation!!

Loved our cruise

  • Farm Life in Norway
We really enjoyed going to Ovre-Eide Gard. The owner was very hospitable and gave us lots of interesting information about farm life in Norway. It was fun to see his animals, his barn, his house and his dungeon. He explained certain customs in Norway and even dressed in traditional clothing. The hot chocolate and the sweets were also very good. Fun excursion!

  • City Tour
The people on the tour were not prepared that there would be so little actual time in Berlin. With 3 hours to get there and 3 hours back, some tours barely had enough time for lunch in Berlin, let alone sightseeing. You cannot see a world-class major city in such a short period of time. People were not told that toilets in Germany cost money, so they were upset about that. Our guide on the long bus trip did not tell us much about Germany in general and was not very enthusiastic about his country. The guide in Berlin was knowledgeable, but everything was disjointed. Luckily my husband and I had been to Berlin before, but I felt sorry for people for whom this was their first introduction to Germany. Perhaps the tours should be limited to smaller towns closer to the port.

  • Gdansk Old Town
Our tour guide, a young man, was very good. He told us a great deal about Polish history and the history of Gdansk. I was very pleasantly surprised by this port of call.

  • Winter Wonderland
We had never been to an ice bar before, nor had we had a dog sled ride before, so that was interesting. However, the whole thing seemed almost too touristy.

  • Ultimate St. Petersburg
Loved seeing Catherine's Palace, the Hermitage, the city itself and the gardens of Peterhof. The ballet was good, but would have preferred going the Mirinsky Theatre. Helen, our guide, was great. She was so knowledgeable and had a good sense of humor as well. On the first day our lunch was at a great folk restaurant called Podvorje, but the second day was not good at that large place (can't remember the name). Felt like we were all cattle herded into a huge hall.

Enjoyed the walking tour, especially learning about the sardine factory. Not sure why people who have problems walking book a walking tour!
