My Mom and I took a two week cruise on Viking Star, from Barcelona, Spain, to Bergen, Norway. The Star was a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be. The brochure didn't give you a sense of how big it was going to be. The Viking representative was waiting for us right at Baggage Claim and the transfer to the ship was very efficient and smooth. There were lots of things to do while onboard. People could get together for Scrabble, chess, or knitting, and there was a lot of use of the exercise room and the spa for massages and lectures in the Star theater. The service oboard was very good. The waitstaff in all the restaurants did great jobs. The waitstaff in The Restaurant, the main venue for eating oboard, knew our names by the second day. We had a city drive in Barcelona on our second day and it was very interesting. We had a number of excursions. My favorite was our cheese and brandy tasting in France. We went to the village of Camember by bus and, once there, watched two films about the production and making of cheese, and while we were waiting for our cheese tasting to be set up, someone's farm dog came down to the museum for company and everyone in the group was petting her, and when she came to me, she flopped down on the ground and wanted her belly rubbed, so I did that for her and she enjoyed it. Had our cheese tasting, which was six different types of Camembert cheese, with a cup of cider, and after that, we did a little shopping there, then went to lunch at a local restaurant, and it was good, if a bit much after having had six pieces of cheese, and then we went to a local farm where Calvados brandy is made and we sampled that and then went back to the ship. My favorite port was London, and while there, I got to fulfill a life long dream of mine, which was to visit the Sherlock Holmes museum, and it was wonderful! We took the train and the Underground to Baker Street on the advice of the man at the concierge desk onboard ship since taking a cab would have been more expensive and taken twice as long to get there. After spending time at the Sherlock Holmes museum and having lunch, Mom and I went back into Greenwich and had dessert at a local bakery we had seen earlier that morning, then went for a walk in the Royal Observatory Park, then went back to the ship for a rest, then did a night time tour of London, which included a trip up on the London Eye, which was truly spectacular. We then got back on the bus and had a night time drive around London and got to see all the major monuments all lit up at night and didn't get back to the ship until after 11:00 at night because there was a lot of traffic, and then the tender boat could only take so many people at a time. We finished our cruise in Bergen and it was a bit chilly early in the morning, but warmed up nicely. There were many different places to eat on the ship. The Wintergarden served tea and had a high tea service every day at 4:00 p.m. My Mom and I took most of our meals either at Manfredi's, The Restaurant, The Chef's Table, or The World Cafe. The food was very good, and had lots of variety. One of my favorite things to eat was Lyonaise Potatoes. There were also home made sticky buns made in The World Cafe every other day, and they were yummy. They also had ice cream and gelato on hand for lunch and dinner, along with different sorts of pastries, cookies and cakes. There was also a small laundry room on our deck, which came in handy for doing some of our laundry. Viking Ocean cruises are not geared for children, most of the passengers being in the 55 or even older age range. I was the youngest person onboard at 28 years of age. The production team put on a number of shows, and they were all very good. One of my favorites was La Peregrina, which was a show about a diamond that had been stolen and it combined elements of Get Smart and James Bond and it was hilarious. There were also lectures in the Star theater during the day, and my favorite was about Horatio Nelson. The disembarkation was very smooth. We were all off the ship by 4:00 a.m. and at the airport a little after that and didn't have to wait long for our flight. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting to see more of Europe. You can also choose how many days you want to be on your cruise, from a 50 day cruise beginning in Istanbul, Turkey and continuing on from Bergen, Norway to Scandinavia or a two week cruise, like what my Mom and I did, ending in Bergen.

Cabin Review

Our cabin had a veranda, with table and chairs, but we didn't use it much in the latter portion of the cruise because some days were a bit chilly. The beds were bigger than the beds on the river cruising vessels. There is also a desk with phone and extensions for your various electronics, such as camera, cell phone and hair dryer, and a small fridge, but we didn't use that much, except to store our shore excursion water in. There are two bedside chairs and a reading table with a book about Viking river and ocean cruises. The flat screen t.v. was a real treat, with pre loaded movies and t.v. shows, and Mom and I discovered Downton Abbey. The bathroom was nice, with heated floors, drawers for toiletries and medicines and things, and a full length mirror for checking your appearance before going ashore, and lots of towels and wash cloths and a robe to wear, and a shower cap and various shampoos and lotions, and the shower was nice and hot. The toilets were quite loud, but I got used to it after a while.
