I have been a fan of RCL and Celebrity and looked forward to my Caribbean and South/Central American cruise. Embarkation went as smoothly as one could expect and the ship was quite nice, although a bit lackluster in decoration as compared to many of the other ships I have sailed on. My cabin was quite nice and clean, but had a few problems with hard to open drawers, loose fittings, etc. which were minor. The cabin staff were excellent and friendly, but that is were the good news ended. Overall the ship was not nearly as clean or in repair as I have grown to expect from RCL and Celebrity. Food was mediocre or worse with the exception of the pasta and stir fry bars which were OK and the Ocean Liners pay restaurant which was quite good. The main dining was hot, crowded and poor at best. I was surprised to hear many of the kitchen and serving staff complain openly about the management of the ship and experienced a number of rude and unfriendly staff members. The excursion staff was openly unpleasant and minimally helpful. I enjoyed all of the excursions, although I found a fair degree of confusion when I attempted to find my particular excursion when getting off the ship. I was concerned with the level of care taken by a young and disinterested crew on a snorkeling excursion in Aruba. I guess it was every man for himself as the crew paid no attention to any guests in the water even though there was a large proportion of guests who had never snorkeled before. Overall the cruise was a disappointment. It appeared that activities were limited in the evening and the pool was closed by 7:00. Entertainment was just fair. There were limited small out of the way sitting areas which are so prevalent on the newer RCL ships. The shopping emporium was quite large, but staff was often disinterested and appeared to have issues with the ships management. I suspect there is some management/employee conflict. It seemed so unusual to not have the almost universally pleasant and helpful crew that is present on most ships. Overall the level of service, food, and ship maintenance were not up to the level of even the older RCL ships and worse yet many of the staff appeared to have little interest in any of these issues. The other aspects of the cruise were fine and up to the standard one would expect from Celebrity. I did enjoy the cruise and although none of the above issues are earth shattering, the did take away from the overall cruise experience. I plan to sail Celebrity again on the new Solstice, but I hope the experience is much better then I experienced on this cruise.
