MSC Meraviglia

MSC Meraviglia - MSC Cruises

Pros

Fantastic for families; foodies and for those who just want to have a lot of fun

Cons

The endless activities and constant noise, plus kids up all hours, can be a little overwhelming

Bottom line: Big, fun, family-friendly ship with good food and endless entertainment

You remember the saying, "All that glitter is not gold!" This is definitely true when it comes to this ship. They dazzle you with the Swarovski crystal infinity staircase and a dazzling dome ceiling that reflects a wonderful nightly light show. All of your sense are captivated on this ship for sure. However, do not be hoodwinked by all of this opulence because the level of service leaves something to be desired. From the moment of embarkation the tone is set for you to hurry up and wait. The line to get on the ship is a standard mazes of twists and turns then you are ushered to another waiting area. Once, on the ship please do not require Guest Services because the lines are long and the service is subpar, they try to help but not genuine. Room Service on the other had is a whole other beast. Be prepared to wait if your call is answered, while they do have a call back feature they do not bother to call back ever! The room service menu has a very limited menu with the better tasting items on the dinner menu which they charge a service fee of $7.95 (read the fine print of the additional 15% gratuity) shows up on your bill as an $9.14 charge. Only order off the dinner menu if you do want to leave your room for steak or if you want wings everything else can be found on the ship. If you find yourself wanting to 24-hour free delivery included with your experience just know that you will be charged irregardless. Most of the food is bland Mediterranean inspired menu at all the restaurants except the specialty dining areas. Keep in mind they are cooking for a large number of guests. If you abstain from pork then you will not eat breakfast meats from the buffet, stick with the restaurants or let them know you need a special meal before departure. If you are a foodie lower expectations and lower it some more...now you will not be disappointed and you will actually enjoy the food. One thing to watch out for is the half clean dishes that are littered throughout the ship, the glasses, silverware and bowls are the major offenders. The stateroom was fantastic and spacious. The room has the standard twin beds that are not terribly uncomfortable. The sofa is a nice touch to make it feel homey. The balcony is an adequate size and at least 4 adults could comfortably occupy the space. If you are neighbors the partition can be open to make more room. Buy the internet at your own risk. The internet service is horrible most of the time it does not work. From Roatan until Costa Maya your internet service will remind you of the days of dial-up service...oh, how you will wish for 2G or 3G speeds. Prepay for the service or just call your service provider and get a better and most likely a cheaper deal. This part is for anyone that has a breathing condition, disease or issue...this is not the ship for you. Stay away because you can easily have a major medical incident because the ship is not well ventilated. There are definitely various chemicals smells coming from multiple areas of the ship and sometimes from your own shower stall. The crew will not listen to you and will treat you as if you are a nuisance. The overall impression is the customer service is poor, the cleanliness of the ship is very good, the cleanliness of the dishes are adequate and they have a wide variety of activities to keep you occupied. I took the Nov 24 2019 cruise. I've taken 4 Royal Caribbean cruise and one NCCL cruise in the past and this was our first time with MSC. When reviewing cruises, I always look at the level of service for the amount paid. For half the cost of other ships, I was able to have a beautiful aft balcony in a pretty new ship. Other reviewers complained about the service or lack of service or English fluency but I didn't experience this. Customer service was less "Americanized" than other cruise lines - - workers don't have constant fake smiles on their faces or pretend to be interested in my day, but I actually preferred this. I personally don't feel like making small talk for 10 minutes before ordering dinner. The workers were friendly without being overbearing. I found the food pretty good even if it wasn't quite as great as some other cruise lines. If you are picky or used to Michelin star restaurants, maybe try a cruise line designed for luxury and not a mid to budget cruise liner. The entertainment was engaging. I found the dancers and vocalists very talented although the production wasn't as high as Royal Caribbean (sets, costumes). The improv comedy was hilarious and the Cirque de Soleil was very cool. Much of the entertainment was in other languages (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese) which I enjoyed. If you prefer to only be around English speakers, Carnival might be better for you (or just don't take a cruise). It's true that there weren't tissues in our bathroom, but there was always extra toilet paper. Embarkation and disembarkation was faster than I have experienced in the past. On port days the wait was typical and I found if there was a long line I could find a much shorter line on the other gangway. I would do definitely consider MSC again, especially if it remains as economical as this cruise. Read Less

It's a relatively new cruise, still has that "new car smell". I'm comparing it with my experiences in RC and NCL. I like the variety in the spoken languages, that's the idea for traveling abroad! The theater shows were good and varied, different everyday (like 6 days of shows!) with three presentations everyday so there's no excuse for skipping, the production is better in RC though. Improv shows were really funny! Food was good, not as varied as RC or NCL but still good. We had all dinners in the main dining room and breakfast on the buffet (but disembarkation day we did Waves, sit down menu restaurant, free). We had the Fantastica experience so we used the included room service for breakfast on some port days. Fewer pool activities/entertainment like the belly flop competition (RC) or the best legs on the sea (NCL), they have a DJ on the pool area but not live music. On the other hand, you don't have to go far away to find a quiet spot and still be close to the pools and bars. We had an internet package (6gb for four devices) and it was good for the two of us, but it was slow the first 2-3 days. Summarizing, good cruise for the price, would like to try sea side or sea view. Read Less
