This was our first cruise (wife, daughter and I). We were a little apprehensive because of some of the negative reviews but found the ship, crew etc. to be wonderful. The ship is beautiful, always clean and well appointed. We arrived four hours before sailing and were through the entire boarding and check in process without stopping for more than two minutes at a time (well organized). Our room with a balcony was very clean and large enough for the three of us. Our cabin steward Erickson introduced himself immediately. Our room was always cleaned several times a day and Erickson made sure our daughter always had a towel animal waiting for her, which she loved. The food was excellent in both the buffets and at the sit down dinners. If you cannot find great food and plenty of it then you are not looking very hard. The food is a mix of European specialities and American food, all was again excellent. The staff were all very nice, spoke very good English and always greeted everyone with a smile. It impressed us that the staff works such long hours and constantly, yet we never heard any complaints and they never looked like they were not enjoying themselves. Our four year old daughter enjoyed herself a lot. She was apprehensive at a "kids meet the captain" event at the Squok Club. The captain on his way out of the club saw her, came and sat down with us and had a ten minute conversation with her. He did not have to do this but it as great example of how the staff go out of their way to make sure the cruise is fun and a great experience. The other passengers were mostly European and Canadian which was actually nice. We did not encounter any loud, obnoxious Americans (we are American). Everyone we talked to were friendly and if there was a lack of English knowledge they still attempted a friendly exchange. This cruise is a great opportunity to encounter other nationalities and enjoy listening to their languages (especially Italian) and learning about their countries. It is almost like having a Mediterranean cruise with Caribbean ports of call. If you enjoy meeting interesting people, eating food from around the world and relaxing with great service, this is a good cruise to take. Read Less

Food was always the same, except the restaurants food, boring shows, air condition in the public rooms the cold, specially in the restaurant we need a warm jacket to eat there. The worst thing are the time on the islands, always to short, costa arrives later and departs earlier than the royal caribbean, may be they save port taxes. Caymans: not enough tender boats, so you waste time by waiting. Never had so many times wasting by standing in a line and have to wait, for everything especially the checkout on the last day. You have to pay for the service twice, by buying drinks and again by costa checking about 300 dollar to our cabin for tipping. Ship was full on Christmas and new year, so you always have to wait a long time for food in the Buffet Restaurant. Deckchairs are all occupied, pool area was very loud, because of the terrible animation all day long, the covered quiet pool was forbidden for children, the security always send them out, so we had to stay in the loudness. Cabin was alright, we had a big balcony with 2 chairs and a table, we could sleep with open balcony every night air condition off, there was a bad smell from the bathroom, so we were happy to have fresh air from outside. The Cabin has a double bed, a single bed, and a pull out bed from the roof, that was scary for the kids, so my husband has to use it, fortunately it withhold his weight, even it doesn't look so in the first sight. Too many days on sea, only 7 stops on islands in 14 days. Don't book costa excursions, time on the island then is very short, st Thomas for 40 usd they drive you in a bus half an hour in the dusty mountains, then to the beach, after 1hour 20 minutes you have to go back to the ship. That's wasting time, better take a taxi at the port and go by your own, so you could stay as long as the ship is in the harbour. Children's club we couldn't use because our kids don't speak italian or English, there was no German animation for them. Read Less

Just got off a Western Caribbean itinerary on the Costa Fortuna. I love cruising with my family and have been to Alaska on Carnival, Western Caribbean with Disney and Costa and Eastern Caribbean with Century and Carnival in the past 18 months. The other cruises were awesome and had food, staff and entertainment that exceeded my expectations. Not so on the Fortuna. The staff were generally very nice. The food was poor. I like to cook and eat and the food we eat everyday at home is far, far better than on the Fortuna. They literally overcooked all meat. Fish, pork, chicken, beef - all thoroughly overcooked. Variety was also sorely lacking. I ended up looking forward to getting into port just so I could go get a descent meal on land that didn't resemble what I'd been eating on board. The entertainment was weak. Disney was by far the best for family entertainment but Century and Carnival had several shows that we could all enjoy. The Fortuna's shows were strange. Think scuba diver climbing a rope with projection fish in the background followed a bit later by Irish dancing and an Italian singing Oh Danny Boy. Weird... The positives- Kids camp was good and my daughters enjoyed it. On par with Carnival, not equal to Disney, better than Century. The New Years party was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, for me and my family, the poor food and so-so entertainment made this the worst of my recent cruising experiences. No desire to repeat on Fortuna or Costa for that matter. Read Less
