Had a great start to our trip with Cocoa Beach Shuttle despite our late arrival into MCO, and a good night's sleep. That's about the last good thing I have to say. I will not go on this ship again. The interior layout of the ship and the ventilation system caused most of the public spaces any where near the atrium to feel of smoke from the casino, which was filled with smokers due to the inadequate and totally exposed smoking areas outside. I use a mobility scooter and was restricted to using the Lido deck to go outside because there were no doors I could get through on my own because there were no automatic doors. The Lido buffet was tiny and the staff (except one) was far more interested in socializing than being helpful. The Cucina del Capitan might have been good but we didn't try it because it smelled so strongly of the JiJi Asian restaurant. The staff in the main dining rooms were attentive. We were delayed in our arrivals in several ports for no apparent reason (sitting in the sea for several hours) and had to cancel several day's shore excursions. I won't mention the ongoing sewer problems in the 6th deck forward. From the mildew and mold smells this won't be fixed until she goes to drydock. Don't bring a Service Animal on this ship. Some off the tiniest cabins I've ever seen. Read Less

The redesign of this ship to allow more cabins seriously hindered the entertainment, pools and deck areas. If you are handicapped and rely on a power chair or wheelchair, you will be treated as if you are a burden or hinderance by staff, crew and guests. The food was of terribly poor quality. We paid to eat at the restaurants every night after the 1st two nights at main dining were cold, low quality food, and not to mention they tried to make us sit at a booth, KNOWING my husband is in a power chair and cannot walk! The DJ (Funky something or other) is LOUSY! Bar service on the decks is almost non-existent and when dinner service happens all staff disappears, so you are left to go downstairs to get your own drinks at the bar. Our bathroom smelled like raw sewage (cabin 11032) the entire cruise. We literally gagged every time we went in there. The layout of the ship is horrendous! To get from decks 11, 12 or 14..you have to take an elevator down, cross over the ship, then take another elevator to get anywhere. About 1/2 of the time only one elevators was working that services decks 11, 12 & 14. Yes, you can take the stairs,s unless you are in a wheelchair or have mobility issues, so you will be stuck waiting, sometimes upwards of 15 minutes or more....and then you have to contend with people rushing past you to get in the elevator, even though you had been waiting for quite some time. The only places where smoking is allowed is on deck 10, behind the jumbo TV screen, port side of deck 3 or the casino. There is no smoking allowed on any of the adults only deck. But, yet on deck 10 where kids are running all over, you can smoke all you want there! How ridiculous! If you are a caregiver to a handicapped person, it is near impossible to get a drink for them on the Cheers card....staff requires the card holder be present to get a drink! We even had crew complaining about the ship and stating they are quitting once their contracts are up. That speaks volumes! Even Calvyn the cruise director has already quit or is quitting very soon! Pitiful! Our room steward, Gede, was wonderful, but he's really about the only crew that I can give an honest compliment about. Sunshine KNEW this cruise was for my husband's 50th birthday. They KNEW he is a disabled Wounded Warrior Veteran...yet here I am writing this review about how he was treated. So sad......... Read Less

I have always bragged to others about the quality and variety of food on the Carnival Menu and buffets. BUT on the Sunshine it was the worst food ever encountered on a cruise ship. Our food was cold, crusty, and dried. The salads were browned lettuce and soups were cold. The service was extremely slow and not acceptable at all. We are both diamond VIP members with Carnival. We have sailed on over two hundred cruises and most every cruise line. We understand that booking with different cruise lines you will experience different types of food, however, cold, tasteless, no quality food is unacceptable regardless of the cruise line. The Carnival product has greatly deteriorated and is not at all like previous Carnival cruises we have experienced on most every cruise ship in their fleet! We are very concerned that this ship does not follow ADA guidelines. It was one of the most unfriendly to handicapped passengers in wheelchairs and the guests were unwilling to share the elevators even though the US law states that wheelchair passengers have first priority in the elevator use. Fellow passengers are getting more and more antagonistic toward those who cannot walk and must use a wheelchair as well as the cruise ship staff! It is interesting to note that Carnival is changing the booking mechanism for handicapped cabins. They have gone from wheelchair cabins with roll in showers to calling the same exact cabin a "walker" cabin thereby eliminating the need to accommodate wheelchair guests. It is blatant discrimination. We will carefully review our choices for cruising this year and go back to cruise line whose product we can trust. Carnival product is no longer the same. Read Less

The app almost never worked, and need the app for almost everything to keep track of spending to entertainment Without the app it was hard to know what activities and pools were included in price., request from housekeeping took forever. Getting off ship they ruined my luggage. The food was hit or miss.Some nights at dinner the food was good other times too overcooked. The shore excursion to bermuda which was the aquiriam and snorkle was disapointing. not the best snorkling place or zoo.There was always a line at coustomer service due to everyone having so many problems The muster drill did not make anyone feel safe. The areas were so badly packed with people you could not even get to your assigned sation.. An up note,the entertainment was great and engaging. Good job Emma and entertainment staff. Read Less

Difficult finding enough activities to not be bored. Went to tons of TRIVIA GAMES daily, more than 9, just to have something to do. CONNECT FOUR board games, shuffleboard, foosball, bean bag toss offered in team competition (I can do those at home, free). Getting to the main Ocean lounge, deck 5, where all the ‘action’ was, required traipsing thru a smoke-laden Casino in the middle of walkway path! No other way to get there! Pure dumb design. Other cruise lines do NOT allow smoking on enclosed rooms, as the smoke doesn’t ‘know’ it should stay in one room, it billows out to any opening found. Highly allergic, face swells like a red strawberry, and need to be drugged on anti-histamines to breathe. (Brought Epi-pens in case, sure glad!) Food, mediocre in Lido. Not enough fresh fruits. I do not like honeydew, cantaloupe, pineapple, and watermelon chopped into one small bowl. Should be large amounts of each, in separate BIG bowls, so flavors don’t mix, nor marinate. Many conversations with other passengers said same thing. We are the healthy group who tries to eat sensibly. FINE DINING had fabulous food! Looks appetizing too. Chef is experienced, good at his trade. Wait staff works well together, makes one feel pampered. Score 10! Every activity room, lounge area, dance area contains those super-tall bar stools. Wheelchair families cannot sit together without the chair person craning their neck to chat. Seems guests prefer shorter, normal height seating, as always full, with only the tall stools left, which I cannot use. (Neither can most all of the older folks). Not many handicap accessible bathrooms, only 2 on ship in main areas, so you are constantly needing to find an elevator to go pee across the ship. Started limiting my drinks severely, so as not to need a bathroom so frequently. My personal room Steward, Erfan doesn’t know how to clean. Shower bench contained black mold, and wads of black, long hair on day one arrival. (I took pics). Bathroom floor grout mold, scum, needs bleached. Walls have splattered brown pecks that do rub off easily, I tested. Gross. I left a note asking for carpet to be vacuumed, it was only partially achieved. (Should a guest HAVE to ask, when you can clearly see lint, hair, and paper on the floor?) He made cute animal towels, that’s about all the credit I can honestly give. Trouble getting a spot for the main big shows, as only two handicap spots on the balcony in theatre. Didn’t get to see any of the big shows, 3 of them on the schedule. My chair is manual, tiny racing style, so if I’m in the back aisle, I can’t see anything except a post. Disappointed. Emma, cruise director, a joy! Delightful young lady, personable, called me out by name several times. Well-suited for that career position. Score 10! Band, BLENDED SOUL, performed in Ocean Lounge, me going thru Casino smoke, gagging to get to this main attraction. Three nights spent dancing in that one area. Band was especially notable. Chloe, lead singer, exceptional, gets the crowd involved. Attended a Magic show that was quite entertaining. Performer was oriented to crowd’s vibe. He gets a 10! Detriment to the SUNSHINE, Atrium has no dance floor. Design Engineer placed a huge, circular BAR on that old floor, limiting the already deprived activities to drinking-only. Many complaints from other passengers, appalled this had been done. Atrium is a main event in a ship, where all people walk by, get a sense of the ship’s enthusiasm, energy, or in this case, that no-party-is-happening if you don’t drink. Comedy club had several shows, some repeated for guests who couldn’t squeeze into the lounge (kudos!). Antman and Kim Harrison get the funny bone kicked in. Highlight of my cruise. Crew super-friendly, most smile and greet, including security & Captain‘s mates. I’ve cruised other ship lines and find this to be true. Carnival Sunshine does have this going for it. You picked awesome people, except my room Steward. Another gal told me her Steward was just as useless in her dirty cabin, so it isn’t limited to my experience alone. Someone needs to follow-up on the room cleanliness of ALL housekeeping personnel, IF you can find them!!!! Staggered embark & disembark do not work. Airplanes and heavy traffic roads don’t agree with your system of assigned, set times. Unhappy guests waiting to board in hours differences embark & grumpy to get home after cruise. Encountered a few spouting insults about Carnival, having to wait while 3-4 tag numbers called at a time, because we were corralled in the main lounge like cattle. I understand WHY you do this, to keep lines shorter, at terminal & customs, less standing, but it doesn’t work well. Trying to find a Porter to roll luggage to my truck is a joke. I asked the lead supervisor 3 times for a Porter. She did ask the first one to follow me to luggage area 23, but he went to another area with more bags, ignored supervisor and me both. Finally, Supervisor walked a Porter over to me herself. Nearly took the 110% guarantee, go back home, but I’m not a quitter. My roommate nearly begged me for a reprieve. Gave Carnival a fair chance, huge let down. Will be going back to my preferred cruise line. Read Less

We just returned from our Southern Carribean cruise onboard the Sunshine. Had it not been for the wonderful friends we traveled with and the many travelers we met, this would have been a cruise bust. I will start with the positives: embarkation was painless despite having to wait several hours for everyone to receive their luggage (we packed our carry-on for this contingency), JiJi and Cucina's were worth the extra fees, our room steward, Ardana was attentive as was our main dining room wait staff...a big shout out to Big Al (see negative for more on that story), & to our deck server, Putu who kept us well hydrated as we lazed in the sun:-). Now for the negatives. We were well aware that the Sunshine was a recently renovated older ship but were unconcerned as we had twice cruised onboard the Carnival Sensation a numer of years ago & had received excellent service both times. Unfortunately, this was not the case during this one. Our first night we dined at JiJi's & as noted above thoroughly enjoyed. We had selected "Your Time Dining", so for the second night (formal night), we had a wait of approximately 45 minutes due to the volume of diners. We were seated at approximately 8:30. Our server, Elmer advised if we wanted 2 lobster tails to order at that time as they stopped serving at 9:15. Really? Despite many attempts at engaging our wait staff, thanking them with each course served, we were met with silence. A grunt of acknowledgement would have been better than nothing. Our food was served lukewarm at best. Unfortunately, this was a first cruise for one of our friends & the experience left her as cold as the baked potato we were served. We eventually left our table prior to dessert, the service was that poor. We did submit a complaint & were assigned second seating for the remainder of our cruise & received excellent care by Big Al & others. However, the food quality was just not as we remembered nor anywhere as good as served onboard the RCL Oasis we sailed upon in January. The renovated areas seemed poorly designed to accommodate the number of cruisers. For instance, to attend a comedy show, cruisers had to stand in line prior to each showing or stand during the show due to limited seating. The venues are too small. Many areas of the ship required going through the casino and/or going up/down flights of stairs to access the correct elevators to your destination, difficult for travelers with disabilities. Balcony rooms do NOT have refrigerators, prepare as we did to bring a collapsable cooler. Our room steward kept it filled with ice, thank you Ardana. Overall the crew were efficient but unfriendly. The lack of attention to detail evident throughout. Many experienced cruisers expressed the same concerns. Is the crew disgruntled or new? It wasn't clear but something is amiss. We purchased excursions for Aruba & Grand Turk. Aruba was chaotic & disorganized. We arrived early but departed 30 minutes late. Grand Turk was better organized but cruisers are essentially limited to the port following the excursion. Curaçao was gorgeous. We elected to wander the area on our own & were grateful we did. Unfortunately, a friend became ill requiring the attention of the ship's medical staff. They were very knowledgable & professional. Has Carnival cut too many corners to keep their cruises relatively inexpensive? Not sure. Would we book the Sunshine again? Not a chance.   Read Less

We were invited to take the inaugural cruise on The Sunshine out of New Orleans. I must start off with the Wonderful staff in the dining rooms! Next I have to give credit to the housekeeping staff. These two areas were by far great to deal with. Now lets go on to the entertainment....... RUDE RUDE RUDE and 2.0 it is NOT!!! There were few shows worth seeing. No Hasbro game show. Couples show was on the last day. Comedy club was so small that few people were able to see any of the shows. If you did manage to get into the comedy show the lack of air conditioning made for a very bad show. The comedians were very good, the couple we did get to see.Kudos to George Lopez! Guest services....... 3/4 of the staff in this department are rude liars! Quick to tell you no one else has complained about the lack of air conditioning on the ship. Although while you are waiting in line 90% of the people were there making that exact complaint. While waiting to speak to a customer service host (diamond-Platinum line) We were rudely cut off by a worker from the art department who then pulls a person out of the regular line (red card) so this person could try to pay for the artwork won in the auction. (3) three credit cards later still unable to make payment and we are still waiting for service. I have to say that this was again rudeness on the staffs part not the guest. Now lets talk about being told that unless we deal with this one rude person we were NOT getting OFF the ship. Tender stickers. This guy was informed that we were platinum and he had no idea that we were not supposed to get a sticker. As per our status as regular cruisers we are escorted to the tender via guest services, no waiting, no numbered sticker required. The ship.... NOT what it was tooted to be. The A/C did not work through half the ship. It was pretty to look at but not well laid out. You had to walk through one club to get to another. Walk through the comedy club to get to the restaurant or right through the middle of the casino. The path is not to the side of the casino but right through the middle. No place to sit and socialize unless you are in a bar. The library is now a bar! Hello if I am in the library I want quite to read I do not want to having to turn down drinks. Also this ship is NOT smoker friendly. Smokers are regaled to a very small area on deck 10 or a small area on deck 3. Now if you are gambling then there is an area in the casino you can smoke. If you smoke cigars then you are only allowed the small area on deck 10. Now lets talk about the nasty sewage smells on messine deck, the lime light club, and spotted through out the ship. At any time you went on deck you had a hard time finding the deck dry. The path ways were so narrow that two people had a hard time passing side by side. The worse area was trying to go into the lido restaurant. then once you made it to the sliding door be very careful as the flooring was so slick it was hard to walk with out slipping. Over all this cruise was a big rude flop! I will not ever waste my time or money on this ship again.   Read Less

Spring break and it looked fun for my daughter. Enjoyed the act of cruising but I was not impressed with the service nor the staff on the ship. The security was a complete joke. I witnessed a couple of incidents and had a couple myself with rude, disrespectful teenagers. Even had someone attempt to steal or hide my mother's wheelchair that had been kept outside in the hallway. Nothing was done in either instance. The food was just ok, not what everyone told me to expect on a cruise. Long lines in the buffet line, bar, and java cafe. With this being my first cruise I would expect to have more guidance from my room steward. Couldn't understand the employees due to the heavy accent. The lido deck should have been better managed. There was never any lounge chairs due to people leaving their towels there all day long. I will book a cruise again soon but not through Carnival. Read Less

We were excited to go on this cruise because two in the party have never cruised on a cruise ship before. The service was lack luster. The food was alright. The tacos and the jerked food were the best. Half Moon Cay was the best port that we pulled in to. Do not expect anything above average on this ship. They allow children to run around the halls all night with out holding parents accountable. Guess where the parents are... that is right.. in the bar getting hosed. The beds were nice. I would have picked a different boat if I could have knowing the info. They nickle and dime you for everything. I would choose your time dinning. This would insure that you get to see the shows. Comedy was one of the best things to due on the ship. The slides were fun and the ropes course was neat. Seems like some of the kids were having a hard time getting their safety harness around the bends though. The only 4 of the heated loungers worked. the steam saunas worked but the dry heat sauna never worked.. The Spa is only interested in selling you overpriced stuff after your over priced treatments. 170 bucks for 10 sea weed bath treatments.. 17 bucks PER BATH. no. Read Less

We joined the Carnival Sunshine from Cape Canaveral,FL to visit Aduba, Bonaire and Grand Turk.. I will segment this review in order to provide the best story of our experience. Boarding: I have mobility issues, but do not use walkers/wheelchairs or powered scooters - normally I can walk the distances needed to board without major issue. This time was different as the walk to the terminal was long and up ramps. By the time we reached the security check point, it was pretty apparent that I was having some distress. Once I got through security, the Carnival shore support personnel noticed that I was having issues and did everything they could to make my boarding comfortable by providing a wheelchair which I did not actually ask for - they provided it. In essence, the shore side personnel were on the ball and helped me tremendously. Accomodations: The ship itself is showing its age - wood refinishing was needed in all areas of the ship exposed to the weather. A lot of rust on the balconies,in corners, etc. In places (notably near the entrances to the open Lido deck area), the floor was pitted and uneven - steel drains needed to be replaced as they were curved down and not even with the surrounding deck. In some places the carpet was worn although still serviceable - it was more an esthetic problem in truth. It was obvious that the ship needs a refitting. Room: Small, no refrigerator, wardrobe doors were loose and would open and close with ship movement,balcony door handle was very hard to open (reported to the Steward, but it wasn't fixed or repaired), bathroom was quite large, but the door wouldn't stay open. The bed was adequate, the TV mount was loose (also reported - no fix). As far as in room TV service, only CNN/HLN, TBS (spanish) and TCM were available. This is one area in which Carnival has created itself an issue. I will say that our cabin steward was attentive and very efficient - that was a plus. The room was clean, the bathroom sparkling so even with the other issues, it was a place to spend the night. Food: There aren't enough bad things to say about the food on this voyage. We did our time dining, but it often took a minimum of an hour to order, eat, dessert and leave. The wait staff had a tendency to order the food from the kitchen in bunches - several tables at the same time which created problems with hot food coming warm and warm food cold. I had a lasagna which was a congealed mass of fat - couldn't eat it. The Lido buffet was better with a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner choices. I'm not sure what the issue was with the Our Time Dining. We did notice bread plates and saucers being wiped and reused which was reported to the office in charge. Excursions: Our first stop was Aruba - we did the Top Ten tour (bus tour) which really turned out to be a Top Six with meaningless stops for uninteresting sites. We spent more time driving than actually touring. This tour was run by De Palm Tours and was not worth the money spent. Second stop was Bonaire and we did the trolly tour which was wonderful, informative and fun. The Tour guide was Anita and she did a terrific job. Unfortunately, our third stop was Grand Turk, but the ship was diverted to the Dominican Republic due to two medical emergencies - went to Amber Cove instead and that was nice - not a place I'd return to again though. Overall, the trip was adequate. As most January passages, the weather played a big part and the ship captain did his best, weather and sea state is out of his control Normally, I'm not bothered by ships moving as I've spent most of my life on the water including a stint as a Charter Captain, but this time it was different. The motion was constant when at sea and made the balcony unusable - which is not Carnival's fault. Self inflicted wounds: The weekend we left was the NFL League championships until mid-day on Sunday, nobody was going to be able to see the game and there were no plans to make the game available. There must have been a lot of complaints because "arrangements were made" to show the first game on the outdoor screen, but not the second, then a half hour before the second game, "arrangements were made". This was a self inflicted wound as there were a large number of fans of all the four teams on this cruise - even the choice of the Lido deck was odd as there wasn't enough seating to go around. Debarking was a horror show. There were ten elevators available for the called decks to depart, BUT all ten elevators exited at the same choke point creating a mass of humanity all trying get past this narrow area. Very poor planning and design on getting guests off the ship. I had some real difficulty moving after standing, but the debarking crew in the terminal was hell bent and determined to get everybody off, in a line and out of their space. To add insult to injury, I couldn't get to the elevator because one of the terminal workers made me go down an escalator with my baggage. Half way down, the bags caught on a step and I fell down the escalator. To their credit, the supervisors were immediately present to help, but the damage was already done and I had to take a wheel chair out of the terminal. It was not a positive experience. I felt that the whole debarking process was not properly organized or coordinated - rushing to get passengers off the ship because it was two hours late arriving (due to weather) to get the new passengers on, creating traffic jams, inadequately trained shore side personnel (with respect to debarking) made the whole trip less than fun. Carnival tried but just couldn’t quite pull it off. Transport from LGA was on time but the driver was not used to driving in NYC. It took an hour and a half to get to the port. The cabin was ready and almost clean. Notified in advance, Carnival dining service failed to take notice of my food allergy and every meal was an exercise in finding food. The Hop-on/Hop-off excursions were an exhausting time of breathing bus fumes or waiting. The guide in Portland was delightful. The St. John and Halifax guides sounded tired. The Kennebunkport tour was fun. The “art auction” is not really an auction but rather a fast and loud sale. The casino was smoke filled. Disembarkation is where true misery resides. Regardless of advance reservation for a wheelchair, we waited for two hours while loud obnoxious people got chairs and nice people did not. Finally, after most people had gone off the ship, we were helped into (more bus fumes) and a mad dash to the airport -- total time from 8:30am-2:00pm. We were minutes away from missing our flight. Some others missed theirs entirely. I will never do another Carnival cruise. Read Less

The first three days of the cruise was bad due to the weather not the captain. I was in the room on those days. They need to put fridges in the rooms because some people have medicines that need to be in the fridge. They also need to put the menu on the television so that people know what is being serve for that night. Some people don't like fish food and fried food, Speaking of fried food that was all that was on the lido deck for lunch and diner. They also need to give the schedule for the next day for tours or entertainments the night before so that people could book their excursion tours or know what to plan for the next day. When we went on our tour in Aruba it was three in a half hours long which was fine, but when we got back to go shopping the stores were all close and no one got to shop in Aruba. The smoking areas for people were close due to bad weather, so I do think that they need to give one side of the lido deck open to smokers, not only for the adults but for teenagers too because the teenagers can not go into the casinos. Otherwise the trip was soso. Very disappointed. Also when we got off the ship and got a porter he broke my luggage and did not report it. I like Carnival cruise line but not this ship. •Background information- This was my 26th cruise - my third with Carnival. I had my 79th birthday on the cruise. I use a mobility scooter because I can't walk far or stand for long. My partner was a younger woman friend. It was her first cruise. We went to Nassau, Amber Cove, Dominican Republic and Grand Turk. This cruise had really high winds and rough seas a majority of the time that we were not in port. My friend was seasick the first sea day (formal night) and a number of other people said they were also seasick. Sometimes they closed the decks because of rough weather. And there were two medical evacuations - one in Amber Cove (reported broken bones) and one in Nassau. •Travel to embarkation port and embarkation My husband drove us to the port and dropped us off. We left at 8, and stopped a couple of places on the way down. Even with the stops, we should have completed the 171 mile trip by 12:30. But since the last couple of miles took half an hour, we did not get to the embarkation point until after 1:00. The lady at the port check-in took away my refillable water bottle (which I purchased for the trip) because she said we were not allowed to take any plastic on board. According to Carnival, this was not Carnival policy. It was particularly silly because there were plastic water bottles in our room which we could purchase. Other than that annoyance, check-in was quick and we could go to our rooms right away and drop our carry-on luggage. We did not get the rest of our luggage until after dinner. They would not say when the lifeboat drill was. And when they had it, they took all of us mobility impaired people into a room so we didn't have to go out on deck which was OK but there did not appear to be an check on who was at the drill and who was not. Our drill was over before the one of the people out on deck. When the drill was over, we went out to see the 5 o'clock sailaway, but they were still loading the ship. We finally went inside at 5:40. I think they left about 6, but we wanted to eat so we missed it. I really wanted to take photos of some of the harbor, so this was disappointing. I don't know the reason for the delay. •Ship information I thought the ship looked a little tired. It did not have the overexuberant decor that I associate with Carnival which some people criticize but I didn't mind. The colors of some areas didn't appeal to me but I liked it better than on some ships I've been on. The ship was decorated nicely for Halloween The elevator doors had mirrors on the outside, but it would have been nice to have a mirror on the back wall of the elevator too - that way I could see whether I could back out on my scooter or whether I was going to run over someone. The elevators were large and fast. But the atrium elevators were on a different system than the main elevators so you couldn't just push one button and have them all stop. You had to run back and forth to look and sometimes I wouldn't get to an elevator in time before the doors shut. There was no way to go all the way around the ship outside unless you were on deck 10 (and then you had to go through some stateroom areas). On deck 3, if I wanted to see both sides, I had to go through the atrium. Some of the thresholds for going out on the deck on deck 3 were too sharp and steep and the scooter (and wheelchairs that other people used) would get hung up. But I know they could do this better as SOME of the threshold were just fine. There was not enough space in the public areas - the atrium on deck 3 and outside the dining rooms on deck 3 were way too small. We went to the theatre for the disembarkation lecture and it did not look like there would be good sight lines from the main area on deck 4. The pools are small - I would have done the water slide, but it was always closed due to high winds unless we were in port, and in port I was doing other stuff. The computer area was easy to use (except that I had trouble climbing up on the stools to use the computer next to the printer). I did not understand at first that once I logged on, shutting down the computer did not log me off - I had to physically log off each time. I really liked the one flat rate computer charge for the whole cruise - no having to keep track of minutes. The internet was pretty slow - slower than what I've had recently on other ships. But I could use it in the room just fine. I went into the gym once and tried to use the exer-cycle which I use several times a week at my own gym, but I found it too hard to use and gave up. There are no restrooms near the restaurants. There should be a closer restroom. •Activities-There were a lot of activities and they were back to back with no space between them. For instance, I went to some trivia - it didn't seem very organized. Everyone was on their own. And there were three trivia games one after the other in the same place with no space in-between. We went to the Halloween festivities, but the parade was too late for us. I don't know if my friend would have played Bingo - we couldn't tell what the charge was for a card so she didn't try. My friend like the activities out by the pool at night (70s night, 80s night, etc). •Service - service was adequate. I know that the room stewards have more to do now, and they did leave us nice towel animals every night. But we found a power strip and a bungee cord under the bed left from previous passengers. The waiters in the restaurant did not remember that I don't drink coffee, or at least they always asked me if I wanted coffee. Otherwise they were most accommodating, including bringing my friend a house salad that wasn't on the menu. Carnival seems to put great emphasis on all the stewards and waiters calling us by name. And they try very hard to do that. They succeed with me, but my friend had a somewhat unusual name which was difficult for them. Personally I think this is a shallow immitation of friendship and an unnecessary burden on the workers when they should be concentrating on doing their jobs instead of remembering everyone's names. •Dining - We were to have My Time Dining in the Sunrise restaurant. Since our cabin is on deck 3 in the bow, it means we have to go up in an elevator to deck 5, go aft and go down in an elevator to deck 3 to get to it. I found out that we were supposed to check in on deck 5 first and when they had a table for us they would call and we could go down to deck 3 - that is because there is no space to wait there on deck 3. That was a totally 100% unacceptable, even if I could have walked down the steps and didn't have to use the elevators. They should only assign people to eat in the Sunrise dining room if they do not have a stateroom on deck 3 and they should NEVER have Anytime Dining there. People above deck 5 can go to the stern of the ship and go down to the restaurant and people below deck 3 can go to the stern and go up to the restaurant, but people on deck 3 are screwed if they are assigned to Sunrise. So I asked for early dining in the Sunset restaurant which is right here by the room. We did get it, fortunately. The restaurant never appeared to be full. The waiters danced every night, and I for one could do without that but my friend liked it. I expected them to sing Happy Birthday to me, but they did not. Restaurants- I tried JJ's at lunch one day and was not impressed. I wanted stir fy and not stir-steamed - it turned the meat to tasteless globs and the vegetables were limp rather than crisp. I went to Cucina del Capitano for lunch on embarkation day, and did not return. I usually got help with the buffet in the main Lido restaurant, but this didn't happen in JJ's or Cucina. I got a burger from Guy's and it was delicous. I also got breakfast at the BlueIguana (their version of ranchos hueveros) and it was also very good. I liked the Lido buffet although it was difficult for me to negotiate (I couldn't easily reach the back row of dishes, I couldn't see the labels as they were over my head and I have trouble negotiating with the scooter without running over people while I am holding a plate of food), but almost always the staff would rush to help me and would also find me a seat and get me a drink We had room service four times, and it was prompt. My friend ordered coffee once and it tasted funny to her - like the coffee pot or cup had not been cleaned. But I don't drink coffee so I can't address that. The menus have been cut to the bone - there is no longer an 'anytime menu' (as such) although there are some items that appear every day. The breakfast menu in the Sunrise is called Brunch and they have breakfast and lunch items. The Lunch menu has only entres and desserts. The ice cream choices do not change much so I stopped asking, and there does not seem to be an option for a sundae type ice cream dessert. Food - The bread at dinner was good. They had nice cranberry rolls which I especially liked. Some of the desserts were good. The snails were good and so were the braised short ribs which were very tender. I drink a glass of cranberry juice every day. Some cruise lines will have cranberry juice (HAL, AMAWaterways, Celebrity) and some charge bar prices (RCCL). Since I thought Carnival might be one of those that charged for it, I brought a bottle of cranberry juice with me. And I was correct. One of the people at the Cruise Critics meeting said they charged her for each glass of cranberry juice. A glass of cranberry juice is not worth $5.00 Carnival does not do Caesar salad well - it is gloppy with dressing. (Noted on my previous cruise with Carnival). Sometimes the food (like potatoes) was/were cold when they should have been hot. Very often, the food was not what was described or was different from what I expected from reading the description. Herbed dressing - no bread in the dressing - seemed to be some kind of fruit or vegetable concoction. Caprese salad - a lump of cheese, a few leaves of lettuce and a whole tomato. (I expected alternate tomato and cheese slices). "Locally caught" crab soup - very little crab in it and I wondered where the Local was where it was caught - we were in Nassau. Junkanoo pot which was to have shrimp, calamari and chicken with pineapple and pepper. But I didn't see any pineapple. It actually did have shrimp, a little calamari and one piece of chicken, but it also had mussels and quite a few scallops. Sometimes they took a good dish and screwed it up. I had the ox tongue, which I like, but they put carmelized onions with it. Yuk. •Entertainment - Neither of us went to any shows •Port & shore excursion Three out of four of the excursions we signed up for were canceled. My friends snorkeling excursion in Nassau and our SNUBA excursion in Grand Turk were both canceled, and my friend's Segway tour had to be rescheduled. Nassau - My friend had never been snorkeling and she particularly wanted to swim in the ocean. But the snorkeling excursion was canceled due to 'lack of participation'. I wonder whether it might also have been because of the recent hurricane. After she saw the photos I took in 2002 of "The Dig" at Atlantis, she really wanted to go there. So we signed up for that excursion The tour included a van to and from Atlantis, but the minibuses didn't have a place for luggage so we had to fold up the scooter - which was easy to do. (The excursion was $60 and the van to and from was included - the admission to the aquarium part is $45). We had a very nice girl as a guide - She took us all through the resort and casino (there were four Chihuly glass sculptures) and guided us through the aquarium. There were large swarms of fish, but the water was not as clear as I remember. The guide said she had been doing the job for four years, but when I asked where some of the things we had seen in 2002 were, she didn't know as she was in school then. Afterwards she told us how we could get to the predator tank and they were feeding the sharks at 3, so we went over there. Eventually we found an entrance for me that didn't have steps. My friend saw them feed the sharks at least from a distance. She didn't have the chance to swim. Quite a few of the beaches and restaurants at Atlantis were closed. We did some shopping there (they said their machine was not working so we had to pay cash) and then got into the van to go back to the ship - but the scooter was still on the sidewalk. Apparently there was a Youth Parade in downtown Nassau and the streets were blocked so we couldn't get back to the ship. Oasis left at 3 and Enchantment was to leave at 4. There were some folks on the shuttle from Enchantment who were worried about getting back but the lady in charge of the van shuttles said they emailed the ship and told them that they would be late back, so they wouldn't miss the ship. And Enchantment was still there when we got back. Amber Cove: I did not do a tour with Carnival at this port, and I did not sign my friend up for snorkeling because I thought the seas would be too rough - and I was correct. We had a very nice tour of Puerto Plata with Marysol tours. We were picked up at the port, and visited the Rum factory, a jewelry and souvenir shop, a cigar factory, the cathedral and the fort. We did not see the Amber Museum or the chocolate factory, and we did not get to ride the aerial tram because of lack of time. I had thought this would be a bus tour with drivebys of various places. It was not. We actually went in and visited each place. The price for this tour (driver and English speaking guide) was $40 without the aerial tram. Marysol refunded the $10 we paid for the aerial tram ride. Grand Turk: My friend did the Segway Tour which she enjoyed very much. I could not do that tour as I could not stand for that long, so I was signed up to do Snuba with her. I was to meet her on the dock at 11. I went out on the dock and stopped by the booth where the Snuba and the Segway people were, and she told me that Snuba had just been canceled as it was too rough and we wouldn't see anything. So I went over to the snorkel booth and they said all their tours were leaving by 9 and there were no afternoon tours. Then I went to where the guy who dispatches the taxis was and asked him and he said we could go to Pillory Beach and rent equipment there. I went down to the Carnival beach (right at the port) and saw that they rented snorkel equipment there too. Then I went back to the ship and confirmed that the SNUBA had been canceled, took off my bathing suit and reorganized. When my friend came back I told her the news, and asked whether she wanted to snorkel here, ($16 rental), go to Pillory Beach ($8 taxi each way plus unknown rental but she would probably see more interesting stuff), or just go and have a tour with me. She opted to go and snorkel right there. She went back and changed into a two piece suit and when she got back, I gave her the underwater camera and some minimal snorkeling instruction, and left her to it. She actually saw some fish, and apparently the swim area goes out past the drop-off and she could see the top part of the 'wall' there. I took a cab into town to visit some places (like the museum) which I had not been able to visit in 2008 when we were here before because it was right after Hurricane Ike •Disembarkation We were unavoidably late back to Norfolk due to stopping in Nassau for a medical evacuation. We were to have arrived at 8 a.m. and we were not docked until about 1:00 pm. When we got the disembarkation information, they knew how late we were going to be, but they still said they wanted us out of our rooms by 11:00 - I did not see the need for that because there are no passengers getting on this ship - it is running empty from Norfolk to Charleston. Later they changed the time to 12:00, but we did not get that message because they didn't broadcast it over the PA. And really there was no need for us to leave our rooms at all, since they did not have to get ready for more passengers. We were told that there wouldn't be enough time to go to lunch, which wasn't correct - we could have gone and eaten lunch. Since we woke up late, that meant that we did not get either breakfast or lunch. We wheelchair/scooter people were sequestered in the Sunset restaurant to wait. They did give us coffee and pastry, but it wasn't lunch. If we wanted to go to the bathroom, we had to go across the atrium (no one who was not disembarking was to be in the atrium) and through the big double doors. We did not get the announcements in there. Apparently it took from 1 to 3 for all the people who were carrying off all their luggage to disembark. I do not think all those people were carrying off their luggage. I think they lied. Even though we had disembarkation #1, we did not get off until 3:30. My friends husband who was picking us up had to wait for us from 11:00 to 3:30 They should have let us go to lunch, and they should have let us stay in our rooms where we could use our bathroom and watch TV and be comfortable. •Summary After she got her sea legs (she was seasick the evening of the first sea day), my friend had a marvelous time. But the medical evacuation meant she could not get to her job and that meant she did not get paid. She couldn't really afford to lose that money, but she will survive, and she had a good time. I had a good time - none of the problems we experienced interfered with that. I got to revisit the Atlantis aquarium, see a new port in the DR, and I finally got to go to the museum in Grand Turk. My group of 10 chose this cruise out of NY because we wanted to take a break from flying to Miami. This was a big mistake. The last four years we have been on the Dream once and the Breeze twice. The Sunshine can not compare to these ships. We knew we were going on a smaller ship, but we did not expect it to seem so small. Let me explain. The first sea day when I went out in the morning to get 3 chairs for my daughters and I we could not find a lounge chair anywhere on the deck. The deck area on this ship is extremely small. There was either a towel, a book, or a bag or whatever on EVERY chair on the deck. It was crazy. People were not in the chairs, lots and lots of towels. Carnival should not allow this. The three decks in the Serenity area was the same situation, but there Carnival employees were putting stickers on the lounge chairs and if you were not back in 40 minutes your stuff was taken off. They needed to do this on deck 9 & 10. My husband was up at 5 in the morning and said that is when the people were putting their towels on the chairs. Who wants to get up that early on vacation??? Not me. We tried to find sun someplace else, but the only other deck was deck 3. There was a time of day in the morning where you can go on one side of the ship but when the sun went up you would have to wait till late afternoon until the sun went down to go to the other side of the ship on deck 3. This is the deck under the lifeboats. It was either this or on our balcony. The only place we got sun on this cruise was on the islands. Either on the island or on the ship when everyone else was on the island. We played a lot of trivia in Ocean Plaza because we couldn't go outside. The shake shack always had a line. They really need more than two people behind the counter. There are way too many people ordering specialty coffee and shakes for just two people. I felt really bad for the workers there. People did complain about the layout of the ship when going to dinner, but all you have to do is walk down the hall to the right elevator and take that down to the dinning room so I didn't find this to be a problem. The food in the dinning room always came out well done. That was great for me because that is how I like my food. But my husband was very disappointed because he likes his food rare. The Steakhouse was amazing. The staff was friendly, it is always a fun ship, I just felt that we could not enjoy the outside without being up at the crack of dawn. The first show on the ship we saw the year before on the Breeze but the other shows were really good. In that area Carnival has stepped up their game. Basically your vacation is what you make of it. Did we like this ship? No. Did we let it ruin our vacation? No. Everyone has different opinions. If you don't want to be in the sun and out on the deck by the pool, then this ship will be fine for you. But if that is important for you, I don't suggest that you book on the Sunshine. It was the first cruise for my daughter and I. She is 31, severely handicapped and uses a wheelchair outside of the house. I wanted to try a different sort of vacation for us since Disney and Universal (definitely NOT Universal) are too much money, too much aggravation and too little reward. I am so glad we had such a bad time at Universal. If we hadn't I never would have tried cruising. This will be our new vacation! I don't think Carnival is the cruise-line for us but we still had fun. Plenty of food and lots on the ship to explore. Since I've never cruised before I don't know what other ships are like. But I know I would like a cruise ship that has and enforces an adult pool and a kids pool. An adult hot tub and a kids hot tub. Is there such a cruise-line? I aim to find out, one by one. Since my daughter wears diapers I was not able to go into the pool or hot tub, nor did I try. I don't think you would want her in your pool/ hot tub (and she is not allowed), so what makes you think I want kids in my adult pool/ hot tub? I have a cruise set up on the NCL Pearl next March to the Caribbean and one of my daughters aides is coming with me. I got a good price (I think?!) So it will be neat to have someone to take turns caring for my daughter. On the Carnival sunshine I had a balcony spa room 11032, it is accessible and a nice room. However on the outside deck next to the room is the recycling bin that would slam shut whenever someone used it, very annoying. No I never talked to anyone about it. It took me about two days to get up the courage to try the main dining room, wish I tried it sooner. My daughter doesn't "wait" very well, so I thought that she would become disruptive. She didn't, she and I loved the food and she ate soo much! The Lido buffet was a disaster, trying to push the wheelchair with one hand and hold a food plate with the other. It was awful and no staff offered to help me....ever. And again I didn't ask for help. There were so many people running around the buffet, it was really bad. The last thing was the Muster drill. I headed down to my assigned area and was intercepted and herded into the game room with some other wheelchair users, and cane users. And we waited, and waited....no one ever showed up. I could see a crew member in the hallway and I went and told him that we had no one in charge in the room with us. He just smiled at me and said OK, not sure if he understood English or not. No one ever showed up so we just left. I gave myself my own muster in my room by reading the info and trying on the life preserver. Read Less

Like others, read some of the reviews and debated booking it, but it was the dates and itinery we wanted and so we booked it and for the most part did enjoyed it. Cabin was good (outside) and luckily was mid/forward as this was good for us. Serenity area good, provided you get up early to get sunbeds as they are gone by 8 a.m and you dont mind just a plunge pool with very little room, to cool down in. Other Lido area was very crowded and pool tiny so did not go there except for drinks. Show lounges are both disappoining after other ships, but staff try their best to work with a crowded ship. The ship is very anti disability and if you cannot get out of a wheelchair you will struggle as there is no space or usable ramps to many areas- the deck 11 serenity area being a really bad one to access.Dining room was o.k. and food mostly good but at times long waits for food. Drink waiters were very overworked and during sea days very hard to get drinks and long waits at bars. Shows were excellent apart from the juggler and game show which should have been saved for camp carnival. Comedy club was good but extremely crowded. If you have a wheelchair ask Noonan about using the rear exit. Elevators were sometimes a problem as they were slow and not all lifts go to all floors. This was made worse by lazy able bodied people hogging them when only going one floor!! This sounds very negative but just pointing out the negatives. Ports were good but didnt do ship excursions as very expensive, we did tours locally and had no issues anx much better value for money. Medical emergency on board was handled well and We were impressed with Carnival on this score. In summary this ship will never be as good as the others in the fleet as Carnival have squashed too many cabins in and the outside areas and lounges are therefor poor in comparison but zt the right price it is worth thinki g about, but if the same itinery comes up on a different ship then choose a different ship. Ok, here is my full review. Please excuse any misspells as I am writing on the fly. My son is disabled and had a room across from us with his friend. Our waiter Jovan and his support staff were VERY good to us. Through many times where he would have to leave to help other waiters because they were understaffed, it was all still good. There seemed to be inconsistencies in our dining times as far as when the foods would get to us. Sometimes it was fast. Other times, it seemed to take along time between courses. The food seemed ok. I don't think it was as excellent as some of the other ships, but still ok. Our room steward was Carlos. No complaints there. I brought some soda and he always made sure I had a full bucket of ice and keep our room very clean. I did notice quite a lot of times a sewage type odor. It would come and go at various places. I did notice a lot of things needing repairs. Maybe it is from my naval background, but a lot of cracked open service doors which contained a lot of piping electrical duct etc. that should always be closed and locked. I saw some corners of metal ceiling panels hanging down for the entire cruise. Most of the staff I encountered seemed to have a smile and took the time to say hello and ask how we were doing. We had booked the stingray city our and it was cancelled due to the weather. My son used his crutches to take the tender over instead of his wheelchair because we knew it wouldn't be able to go on the stingray city boat and he shouldn't have to do a lot of walking. AFTER we were on shore we were informed that the Stingray tour had cancelled and our only other option was to do the beach day for 20.00 more per person which totaled 80.00 more. At that point I felt I had no choice because we didn't have his chair and there was no way he could walk around very long. So we took the beach tour and later that evening when we returned I went to the service desk and spoke to a woman about it. I told here basically the same thing and told her, "I know it's not your fault the weather was bad, but it also wasn't our fault. I am not asking you to cover the whole 80.00 but could you maybe cover half. We can split the loss." She got very rude and said she would forward it to the excursion desk but that they don't do that. It is all at our own risk. The next morning the excursion desk called and said they would be happy to split it with me and that they thought that it would be very fair. With all the above being said that would not stop me from going on this ship again. Hiccups happen. People have bad days from time to time. It is all part of life and you have to accept that. BUT............................. *********PLEASE READ THIS PART CAREFULLY!!!********************* This is the reason I won't probably go back on the sunshine. As I said my son is disabled. He was in a room for persons with disabilities. The shower is specially designed with no step into it There is a channel for the water to drain into that is shaped like an L. The long part of the L goes along the shower and the short part of the L goes in front of the bathroom door. They are covered with metal grates so that there is an even surface. On Wednesday night my son was sitting on the bench showering and the channels overflowed with water sending a ton of water flooding out the door and into the cabin. His friend was off getting a soda so he turned the water off and was trying to get out and get a robe on to come get me. He has spina bifida and has no feeling from the waist down. One of the metal grates came up and he got 2 bad lacerations on his right foot. This is extremely hazardous for people like him because of the problems with healing in the lower extremities, much like persons with diabetes. He didn't realize it so as he rushed over and came into our room to get help we noticed his foot was bleeding very badly. We sopped up the water and went to medical and got gauze and med-tape Both rooms had large blood stains. The medical office had no peroxide. The head maintenance person came and explained what happened. He told me that when they built these cabins, the drain in the L channel should have ben on the long side of the L closest to the shower. They put it at the very end of the short side of the L. So all the water backs up and overwhelms the drain with too much water. He said they have the same problem with this cabin and others almost every week and that he thinks they should dry dock the ship again to fix a lot of major problems like this. This is such a HUGE problem for me. They know that there is a problem with these cabins for persons with disabilities and yet say nothing putting people like my son at risk for injuries. Had they told me before hand, hey this might be an issue, I could have made sure to be monitoring his shower when he used it. Now we have to watch his foot very closely to make sure it heals ok. very disappointed ....................... Read Less

Cruise dates fit our schedule well. As we ended up with 24 in our group (not planned) all with my time dining it was quite a surprise that we never had trouble with seating for dinner. We actually had a group of tables 3 of 7 nights and on other nights group members tried out different venues which was fun to share with each other later. We loved Hostess Rashida and tried for Head Waiter ElPedrio with success. The Daily Chicken is rather tasteless but the Port Menu which changes each day offered many tasty entrees. Everyone raved over the salmon, trout, flank steak. Try to time my time so you aren’t rushed to get your main course by showtime. The waiters are required to stop everything to perform. We only had that happen 1 time we made sure to be very early or late most of the week. We only did breakfast 1 time on LIDO the rest we went to the dining room and had excellent experience. This is contrary to other reviews we read which surpirsed me. We always requested a back table to enjoy looking out at sea. Eggs, Omlettes, pancakes, waffles, etc were great and bacon cooked crispy to order did not disappoint. Ports - DR We found a taxi driver to take us to the TRAM, RESTAURANT, AND SOUVENIOR SHOP in Puerto Plata. Our driver stayed with us even up the tram. Of course we treated him to lunch. The cost so reasonable $90, $30 tip, $20 tip driver manager. Round trip was 3-4 hours. Puerto Rico - we decided to just walk to shopping found the Cathedral, Umbrella Street, Genesis Cafe, just enjoyed a beautiful day. Our cousin went the rain forest which she said was fantastic (another contrary report to some on this site). St. Thomas - we have been before so we had a mission to revisit Crowne Jeweler (not associated with ship) traded in some jewelry for upgraded diamonds went to and from on Cruise shopping tram ($4/person each way). Going with the shopping expert (Debra) was a great way to avoid going through cruise port shops to find a taxi which might have cost a little more. We walked right into a parkinglot next to ship, boarded the trams and away we went. Grand Turk - last stop we took my parents off ship - was quite a long walk for Dad but he made it. We (4 of us) rented a golf cart from Grand Turk Adventures. Jim had to walk about 2 blocks to pick up but was then allowed to drive up to benches at taxi stand to pick us up. The cart seemed to have some issues so we stopped at stand and traded for a different cart which was quite better. The draw back was not all carts had island maps but I had downloaded one to my phone which once we got orientated work just fine. We found our way within sight of Lighthouse, visited a couple churches, salt flats, etc. Nice value $75/day plus refill gas ($12). There was another rental group at the port for $100 + gas which might have been closer but this worked for us. Entertainment - The Lobby Bar was the focal point when Felipe (Cruise Director) would arrive. He would keep everything hopping and participants would often be rewarded with a free drink or bottle of bubbly. He was very good and we loved watching him entertain. Cassidy-Rae was new in piano bar Putting music and a bit of comedy together. We should have gone to see her instead of Tim Young Comedian. She proved you can laugh without vulgarity. Young was so vulgar we didn't go back. Later in the week Joe Marlotti arrived and his 1st show was in the Liquid Lounge - it was a nice crowd but plenty of seats. He appeared to be toned down a bit but had us laughing so we did go to his last show on the last night he didnot disappoint I only heard 1 vulgar word but the MC cant speak a sentence without 2 minimum vulgarities his claim is that if you cant take it from him the show is not for you (WHAT?). Anyway seek out the good comedians that can use the whole dictionary of the english language to make you laugh. I would add that we attended night shows in the liquid lounge without ever fighting for a seat as other reports might lead you to believe. There is ample seating on the lower floor and above. Finally we did attend the Veterans Gathering, hosted by Felipe, it was quite wonderful to respect and honor the many veterans on board. Of course my Dad (91+) was the only WWII in attendance - we were very proud to be there to hear the fine remarks from Carnival and the Veterans who chose to speak. Read Less

I cruise with my 2 teenage daughters, 14 and 16 this was our second time on the Sunshine. We had a great trip. It seems like people find things to complain about on the Sunshine since it is a older ship, but we have really enjoyed ourselves on it. The only problem with the Sunshine is that it is a little harder to navigate than some of the other ships. We are going to cruise on the Sunshine again next July when it comes to Charleston SC. I enjoy Grand Turk because the pool and the beach area is right off the ship. We enjoyed San Juan. But it is not very handicap accessible. My mother is in a wheelchair and it was very hard for her to get around. Carnival has cut out some of the things that they use to do to make the trip a little special. You can tell that the employees are over worked but most of them are still very friendly. I feel like most people would love to cruise but its not for everyone. But if you go look for the good things not the bad. Read Less

We chose this cruise because the itinerary was awesome with the ports.Rooms were clean and kept up every night, Food could have been better on the buffet for lunch and dinner. Not to many choices and everything seemed the same ole same ole.Breakfast was our favorite meal of the day. We chose to hang out half our cruise in the piano bar at night. The piano man Eden Parker was very talented and energetic. We enjoyed this the best and that is what made our experience so much better. Things we did not like was we had to go through the casino to get to the atrium, fun shops,lobby and other entertainment. Ports do not cater to wheelchair cruisers. No public transportation or excursions for disabled.My Mom was very disappointed and stated she will not cruise again. This was her second cruise which turned out to be a big let down, The ports were great for us because we paid on shore and did tours for reasonable prices. I probably will not cruise Sunshine again but we are dedicated to Carnival and will continue to cruise through them. Read Less

We were celebrating our 40th anniversary. I am in a wheelchair and was worried about being able to get around, no problems there. People were so nice and considerate. We didn't move around so much, as to stay out of people's way. When we booked the cruise, I read online that we could bring 2(750ml.) of wine onboard in our carry on luggage. We ended up having to check that bag, because it was too big for me to carry and my husband wouldn't be able tom push my chair. It was supposed to be served with our dinner with a corkage fee.If someone had been there to help us when we arrived, we could have avoided this whole situation.We finally got our bag around 10:00pm. There was a letter attached. It basically said that no alcohol is allowed in carry-on and checked baggage.We could have gotten it back on the last day of the cruise, but wasn't worth the humiliation. There was a gift card in our stateroom for dinner in one of 2 restaurants. Our steward left us a $50.00 gift card for the spa. Overall it was a very good cruise. Guy's burgers were awesome. Lido Market was good, not great. Cuchina del Capitano was good. The entertainment was awesome, from the hypnotist at Viva Variety to the Love and Marriage Show to the Epic Rock Show on the last night of the cruise. I read a lot of negative comments before we sailed that just weren't true. I went back and read them again, and I have concluded that these are people that travel a lot. Some have cruised more than 20 times. Melessa was our cruise director. She did an excellent job! She has quirky little laugh that becomes contagious. If you're sailing on the Sunshine, you're sure to have a great time. Even with the wine mix-up, I would still sail with Sunshine again, hopefully next year. Read Less

We selected this cruise for the ports. The only one we had visited was Grand Turk. There were 4 of us-myself, my grandson, my sister and her daughter. If I had to rate this cruise on temperature in ports it would fail greatly but that was something Carnival could not control. I did ask one of our tour guides the best time of the year to visit and he said Dec-March. We drove down on Friday leaving home about 4:30am and reaching the Country Inn and Suites about 3:30. With 3 women in the car we had lots of potty breaks and driver changes. The grandson slept the entire way except for the food stops. The hotel was nice and clean, the room was great, and a great breakfast was served. We drove to the port and parked no problem. There was a long line at the first entrance but we went to the one it said on the boarding pass and were parked in minutes. Check in went smoothly (except for one grouch but we ignored her and kept going. Nothing else was said and were on the ship in minutes. We were on the fifth floor in a handicapped accessible room as my sister is in a wheelchair. My grandson was in a room across the hall by himself due to a glitch at work with his sister who didn't get to come because of work at the last minute. We enjoyed this area with the exception of the strips across the hall. We understand why they were there but some a wheelchair could cross without throwing the rider out and some not. Sis rode through the Shake Spot backwards all the time because of that. We enjoyed the activities we did. We would have enjoyed going into the Liquid Lounge from our floor but it was more like bleacher seating up there. No where for a wheelchair so they all had to be downstairs. Let me say our service was wonderful! Faruk was our room steward and he did a marvelous job. The rooms were always clean and the ice bucket full. Our dining room servers were Dalforinio (Dal), Nyoman, and Melanie. Our drinks were always there waiting for us and extras appeared without asking. Dal always pushed my sister out to the elevators and one night all the way to the room. I will say the one day we ate brunch was a bit of a let down. Our server was a different Nyoman from our nighttime server and his service was bad. He never brought me anything to drink (another waiter finally got me something) and I never got my dessert because he totally disappeared with never a smile or word except "your order". We only did three excursions because very few are wheelchair accessible. In St Maartin our tour director was Dennis the Menace. He was very knowledgeable and very punctual. We did the Butterfly conservatory and he kept us on track to visit the other places so we had time to shop. On St Kitts we did the 10 Best of St Kitts with York. It was very interesting but by the time it was over I was nap ready. We just got off and walked around the port area in San Juan because nothing looked like Sis could do it or sounded very interesting. And it was hot! When we got to Grand Turk we did the Family Beach Break and thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn't get the drivers name but he was loads of fun. Good food, free drinks, free umbrellas, a nice beach. My grandson walked out for a long time before it ever got over his knees but he is over 6 feet tall. They also had water toys out in the water for the kids. Disembarkation was a total mess. As FTTF we were told to be in the Sunset dining room at 8:30am and we were there on time. We were not allowed in because it was full of self assist people so the handicapped had to fill the Atrium with very little space for us to sit. An hour later they finally let us off the ship because it took them so long to unload luggage. My opinion is that they should let handicapped get off and out of the way so everybody else is not held up by the wheelchairs and slow movers. We heard lots of gripes about that while waiting in line to leave. To sum it up we really enjoyed the trip, even the heat. People were very good about holding the elevator doors and getting close so all of us could get on. We even had two couples hold the line so we could go into the Liquid Lounge when they opened the doors. No was impolite that we met only helpful. Read Less

Chose this cruise because it was departing from Charleston, SC and going to San Juan. The food selections and quality was amazing. The entertainment especially Zack Daniels in the piano bar was great fun every night but Thursday. Thursday is his drinking night and he was not performing. The shows in the Liquid Lounge where really good. The Acoustic Jams with the young couple Unity entertained us almost every night. They sang a variety of songs and he whistles well while she plays the drum. Ketut and Joyce took good care of our rooms and the Omelet Station on the Lido deck in the Havana Bar was my favorite breakfast most mornings. I would recommend this ship to the 50 and older travelers. They made up 90% of the cruisers onboard. If you require a wheelchair to get on and off the ship this port and this ship does it better than any of the more than 14 ships of 6 different cruise lines I have traveled on. I've cruised quite a few times on both Carnival and other cruise lines. This was the best cruise I have had. The food and service were extraordinary. From the time we entered the ship Carnival lived up to their claim of FUN cruise. The atmosphere was great. When we reached our cabin our Steward Eman took care of our every want and need. He told us he has been on board for 12 years. His experience surely shows. Emma, our cruise director was the most active person I have ever been around. She was go, go, go from early morning until late at night. She would not let you not in enjoy yourself. The entertainment was very good but Music and Magic Duo was incredible. He was a fabulous keyboard player and vocalist and she was absolutely great. Her covers of Whitney Houston and Adele songs were super. The food was wonderful no matter where we ate was top notch. We will be cruising again in the not too distant future. It will be on a Carnival ship and quite possibly the Sunshine again. Read Less

My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary. From the minute we arrive I felt like a superstar. I was pleased with everything Free meal at Jiji. They treated us so well. Every time I left my cabin and came back it was cleaned and decorated with something nice. The hospitality on this ship is amazing great ppl. We meet great ppl as well. The food was awesome morning noon and evening. We kinda over ate. I enjoyed the casino and the drinks. They all were very informative. They told us to go eat in the Sunrise Dining room which was great. the food drinks (top shelf) everything Emma and Sandy had the boat rocking all day long. I wish I could go back to Canada again Overall great experience and thank you Caetano for making my cabin feel like my home THANKS CARNIVAL I WILL BE CRUISIN WITH YOU GUYS AGAIN!!!!! Read Less
