Alaska Environment Update
More progress on Alaska's environmental skirmish with the cruise lines: Alaska Governor Tony Knowles said the cruise industry concurs with his call for tougher standards following a meeting with the International Council of Cruise Lines - the industry's lobbying arm - and eight of its members. They are Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and World Explorer Cruises.

The key issue resolved at this week's meeting was that the cruise industry has committed to supporting federal legislation that restricts where their ships can dump wastewater while in Alaskan waters.
The governor says this is "a good start toward addressing the serious problem of maintaining Alaska's pristine inland waters and protecting our oceans."
