(1:30 p.m. EDT) -- A Celebrity Cruises' ship was forced to stay overnight in port and skip a port stop due to an unspecified mechanical issue yesterday (July 5).
Celebrity Reflection was delayed in Civitavecchia (Rome) overnight until 3 p.m. (CET) yesterday, meaning it could not stop in Messina, Italy.
The ship is now on its way to Piraeus, Greece, where it is due to arrive tomorrow (July 7) and the rest of its itinerary will continue as planned.
Passengers received an unspecified amount of onboard credit as a gesture of good will from the cruise line, according to a post on the Cruise Critic Message Boards.
Cruise Critic member orimeep wrote: "So, on previous cruises I've missed ports because of weather, etc. but we actually haven't departed...Embarkation was yesterday and there's something wrong with the ship, so 24 hours later we're still sitting here. Missed our first port (Messina) - hoping we actually get underway today (haven't heard any updates since last night)..."
A short while later she added: "We just got a flyer in the stateroom telling us they're still planning on a mid-afternoon departure today and offering an onboard credit as a "gesture of goodwill and to thank you for your understanding". And as I was typing the captain just announced that the mechanical issue has been fixed and we'll be departing shortly! Yay!!"
A spokesperson from Celebrity said: "Celebrity Reflection's stay in Civitavecchia, Italy was extended in order to resolve a technical issue. The repairs have been completed and the ship departed Civitavecchia at approximately 3:00 p.m. local time. The ship is currently sailing to Athens (Pireaus), Greece, and is expected to arrive on Monday, July 7, as originally scheduled."
Celebrity Reflection is on a 10-night round-trip cruise from Civitavecchia.
