| National Guard at FL Ports |
Cruise ports in Florida are airport-izing security measures with the addition of armed National Guard soldiers. Beginning today, the National Guard -- which is already patrolling the nation's airports -- will be stationing soldiers at the Port of Miami (the world's busiest), Ft. Lauderdale's Port Everglades, Port Canaveral and the Port of Tampa.
Their mission? To supplement efforts by existing security staffers to screen passengers and baggage as well as reinforce security around port perimeters.
According to a National Guard commander, the deployment was not a result of specific threats made at any of the Florida ports but simply an effort to reassure and boost confidence of passengers and provide an extra measure of deterrence.
