Our friends, celebrating their 50th Anniversary, invited us to join them on this cruise. My husband gets seasick so we were a bit nervous, but decided to go. The river was calm and usually we didn’t realize the boat was even moving. The cabin was smaller than we expected, but everything was well thought out. The entire crew was excellent; personable, professional, and friendly. The included tours were excellent, though we thought all tours should be included in the price rather than offer extra charge tours daily that often had conflicting times with the included tours. WiFi was frustrating, but we expected that it might be a problem. The food was good and there were a variety of selections each meal. Our waiters were excellent. A suggestion is to serve small plates on the Bavarian night as the rush to the buffet of the entire dining room at the same time was awful that one night. Every evening before dinner our program director, Oliver would give a little talk explaining the next day’s activities etc. He was just great, handling everything with ease, answering all questions, and providing humor and entertainment. We would definitely do another river cruise if we saw one that went to cities we might want to visit. Read Less

We had been considering a river cruise with a group of close friends for several years. Other friends had already taken a Viking river cruise and had nothing but praise for the experience. So on May 26 a group of 12 of us sailed on the Viking Egil for a Romantic Danube cruise. The staff onboard was terrific, particularly our Program Director Oliver Grozner, and our waitresses Julie and Jesse. The food was excellent and the service very attentive. Most of us purchased the Silver Spirits package and the selection of wines and cocktails was outstanding. The excursions were very interesting and educational and I felt that the guides were all very knowledgeable. The sole exception would be Szentendre (outside of Budapest) which we felt to be a tourist trap We extended our cruise on both ends with 3 extra days in Prague and 2 in Budapest, both beautiful old cities with many great sites to visit. Our hotel in Prague was the Art Nouveau Palace and was very nice. The hotel in Budapest was the Hilton Budapest City, not quite up to par. The ice machine on our floor was broken and there was no safe in our room. Returned home exhausted but extremely happy with our experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the destinations on the Danube River. We started in Nuremberg, went to Krems, Vienna, and finished in Budapest. Viking does an excellent job with the on-board services. We thought the staff through all the stations was excellent (Front Desk, Waitress, Restaurant Servers, and particularly the Program Cruise Director). Be sure to sign up for the Silver Server package (allows you to have all types of on-board wine, beer, coffee, and liquor). The evenings were wonderful - - after dinner we went to the lounge where Viking put on some brief entertainment (about 30 minutes), and then the piano musician (and a few additional instruments) played any requests. The evening winds down about 11 to 11:30 PM, so there is no disco going all night long. This is not a young adult cruise - - it is targeted for people aged 50 to 75, who are physically in good condition to take part in the excursions & sight-seeing in each town. The only 'children' on the cruise were a few college students, who were with their parents. Read Less

Many people recommended Viking. Food choices poor. Gristle steak. no sweet wine so they added sugar vanilla ice cream with banana slices in it - ugh! Don't take Heurigen Evening wine tasting - terrible. Szentendre tour was to have open air museum but it was closed and they did not tell us but they sure charged us. Changed Hotel as we had taken the two extended days in Budapest but did not tell us. Had to get our own bags at hotel. Don't take room 101 you are right under the desk and entrance to boat. People left boat at 3 am and rolled luggage over our heads. We had that room as it was the last one available when we signed up. Don't pay for a balcony as Viking double docks and triple docks ships so you can't use your balcony and not be about 3 feet from the ship parked next to you. Nice. Program Director gave so much info so fast on disembarkation. Why? Seniors on board. Print it out and hand it out so we have it in front of us. Poor planning. Read Less

We booked this trip over a year ago, chose the room we wanted and we chose perfectly. We had room 324, it was one of the larger rooms, a bedroom and sitting room, two TVs, a much larger shower, very comfortable. The Stewart was in twice a day, restocking the fridge, changing the fruit tray out, replenishing the diet cola and water, he left the wine and champagne just in case we changed our minds and decided to have some. The beds were comfortable and you could set the temperature for each room. The balcony was large enough for two to sit on, and a pair of binoculars were in the room. There is a coffee station on the third floor just outside the lounge, several different coffee selections are available plus hot water for tea and hot chocolate. There is always pastries or cookies provided in baskets in case you get the nibbles during the day. The loung is where you meet up with fellow passengers and the cruise director each night, he runs through the next day’s activities and this is where you find out about the included excursions and optional excursions. We ate all our meals in the dining room, the breakfast had many selections to choose from, from porridge to scrambled eggs, fresh made omlets, toast, pastries, fruit, or you could order off a menu, French toast etc. For lunch they had soup, sandwiches, salads, at the buffet area there was usually a pasta dish, fresh made, or again, you could order off a menu, usually from a selection of two items. Dinner was fantastic, each night there was a different selection, or again you could order off the menu, I did have the steak a few times from the menu, as it was very delicious, ALWAYS a great dinner and the wait staff were fantastic, if you wanted to taste something from the menu, but you had taken the buffet, they brought it to you right away, always, ALWAYS there with water, wine, coffee anything you wanted, you got, can’t say enough good things about them The included tours were very good, nice guides very informative then you would have the rest of the day to discover the cities on your own. May I suggest, if you have on board credits, and you plan on purchasing items from the ships gift store, used your credits early, as we found out, they don’t replenish the items, and I was disappointed twice on items that I wanted to get. When it came time to leave, Viking took us to Prague for our cruise extension, they provided shuttles from our hotel to the centre of the city all day and until late in the evenings, every hour, and when it came time to leave for the airport, a guide came with us on the tour bus, checked us in at our airline, provided us with a box of food as we left the hotel so early and pointed us in the right direction to security, always, they were always there for our needs, what ever we thought we might need or desire, can’t say enough good things about the viking crew. When you returned from the included excursions there was always staff waiters no to greet you and offer either a small hot chocolate to warm you up, or a small treat to help tide you over, totally awesome Read Less

We have been thorough Europe, but never had the opportunity to experience an ambling cruise from Prague to Budapest. Looking and the brochures, this cruise looked like a wonderful opportunity to travel uninterrupted with a 5 star line. WE WEREN'T DISAPPOINTMENT! From the moment Viking met us at the Prague airport till the moment we were personally escorted to the security line at the Budapest airport, we were immersed in Viking's special treatment of their guests. Small ship (less than 195 travelers) made it idyllic to get to know your companions and yet not feel crowded nor rushed. Staff was so friendly and went out of their way to accommodate your requests. Food was spectacular, and so were the wines served from the regions we were cruising in. The Egil was fairly new, and the cabins were comfortable and spacious. Overall, Viking provided a top notch experience. Lovely ship, very friendly staff, good food and we met some great co-passengers. Viking had EVERYTHING well organized and there were no glitches. The staff were ALL very friendly and accommodating. We often took advantage of eating somewhat lighter fare in the Casual dining area in the front of the ship, which had outdoor seating. The food was very good in general. It was Very relaxing to sit and watch the riverside slide by. The Only thing I wasn’t crazy about was going through the many locks— a bit claustrophobic. My husband didn’t seem to mind. Having done several ocean cruises in the past, we enjoyed this change of pace and would love to do another Viking river cruise. A river cruise is very different experience—not much entertainment, no pool, no fitness center, no gambling etc. However, we did mind that a bit. Read Less

This was our first, but not last, river cruise. Have been on ocean cruises before and enjoyed them, but fell in love with the slow pace, small ship, and no crowds of the river cruise experience. Viking is terrific! The ship was delightful, crew was outstanding, good food and nice fellow passengers (mostly Americans and British). Viking has everything organized to a "T." Local guides, buses when required; everything on time and very well done. We had a suite, which was a super extra splurge. Probably wouldn't do that again because of expense, but it was nice having two rooms! Also, all the free wine, beer, bottled water, etc. you could want in the minibar and free laundry was part of the suite experience. We enjoyed the dining room but especially the more casual Aquavit. We had most breakfasts there as we didn't want more than yogurt, fruit etc. The dining room offers just about anything you could want for breakfast. All the food was very good! We did both pre-and post-cruise extensions and the Viking staff in the hotels are very helpful. If you want lots of on board activities, etc. this is not for you. But if you want a lovely relaxing time, we highly recommend it. Looking forward to another. Read Less

We chose Viking because it had the itinerary we wanted and at an excellent price. Best of all, EVERYTHING was included in the price of the trip...including internet (unlike some cruise lines, which charge $75 per minute...) and beer, wine & soda at lunch and dinner. Viking was a class act from the moment we stepped aboard until the moment the cruise ended. Viking went FAR BEYOND our expectations in every way. There was an included excursion at every port...sometimes two, and every time we left the ship, Viking gave us a cold bottle of water so we wouldn't get dehydrated. (Other cruise lines have the audacity to charge several dollars for a bottle of water.) When we returned from our excursions, they frequently had treats for us... The staff was fantastic, service was amazing, the rooms were spotless, the food was fabulous, the wifi was free (unlike other cruise lines that charge $ ..75 a minute.) The excursions, which were also included in the price, were exciting, interesting, educational and fun. The tour guides are well-spoken, engaging, entertaining, and knowledgeable, Viking was a superb value and an amazing cruise! Read Less

Timing was perfect, so with the advice of a super agent at AAA (Portsmouth NH ), we were able to book the Romantic Danube , with a great cabin, Veranda stateroom 219 ! The Viking people were on top of everything, from meeting us at the to seeing us off. In fact, our flight leaving Nuremberg was cancelled, but our escort made sure new arrangements were made, and stayed with us until departure. On board the Egil I felt pampered by Anthony the cruise director and entire staff. Amazed that servers knew us by name on the second day. Food was superb with a menu that surprised me with the variety. The stateroom for its size had plenty of room, although we didn't spend much time in it. Shore trips were were well done with guides who knew their sites, and answered all questions. This was a 'bucket list' markoff for an 82 year old celebrating a 55th wedding anniversary, and well worth. We took in the extra concert in Vienna the night we were there; it was very well done. We liked being able to sit with many different people as we ate our meals on board. We met many interesting folks from all over the States. My sister traveled with my husband and I. She was excited to see places she had not been to before either. She is a very good amateur photographer and will be putting a book together of her photos. The food and service aboard the ship were great. We wanted to do a river crise as we had heard so much about them . We have done a lot of ocean cruises but never a river one. Flew from Heathrow with BA one and a half hours had to collect luggage and take to bus. The transfer seemed a bit long winded, as we seemed to get to the Danube from the wrong end. We had to drive in very heavy traffic a long way past the ship and back so we were on the correct side of the road to get off.Check in very quick with not airport security as with ocean cruises. cabin as expected same as other ships, we chose the cheapest at the waterline. We only sleep and get changed there. We went with another cou[ple explored the ship. tea and coffee making machines on entrance tot he laounge always working except once when it was being worked on. The ship apart from our deck with only cabins next one up was reception and the main dining room. One deck above was the main lounge with a bar and lots of seating. The back park had a small self service at meal times and on nice days you can sit outside to eat. Above this was the top deck fine views and plenty of seating two mini golf courses and a deck quits. We only used it a couple of days due to the weather. Trips some trips included some you paid for. As far as we could see they all involved walking a bit. Viking coaches at each port to take you to the destinations. First night deal with food later after dinner we went for a walk over the chain bridge fantastic Budapest is a lovely city at night, large buildings a palaces all lit up. Next ay trip round Budapest time on our own when we got back on the ship we were greeted with a soft drink and canapes. Almost all trips get you back for lunch. Sometimes lunch is to make sure you get some. Estergom strudel making very good had as much to eat as we liked. Vienna nice walk around town and time to ourselves to browes the shops that evening we went to a musical recital the best i have ever been to fantastic would recomend. Vienna naxt day We went on our own to Schonbrunn Palace underground there, our director showed us how it worked went round the palace with translators tube back to the town. tube abck to ship cost 42 Euiros for the two of us. The ship wanted 59 each result. Krems went to monastry not bad back for lunch Afternoon cruised the Wachau valley it poured with rain and visibility was poor. Passau trip round not bacd Regensburg Easy walking tour walked back to ship for lunch Nuremberg. Went on the WW2 trip to nazi rally point and courtroom. Very good trip thoroughly enjoyed it Overnight and left for the airport at 7.45 the next morning a bit early. STAFF The best and most helpful of any staff I have come across on any ship or hotel. Absolutely faultless always spoke and could not do enough for you. FOOD very good breakfast in full in dining room or at the front of the ship for continental. Lunch three courses or buffet at the front of the ship. Dinner Three courses or buffet at the front. Not a large choice three items every night and three different ones for main. All the food was very good and plenty of it DRINKS free during lunch or dinner weather you had the meals or not no limit to the amount you can have during the set times, the rest you pay for. CABIN got what we paid for our steward mucked us out in the mornings and turned the beds down at night. SHIP almost new could not find a fault with it. ENTERTAINMENT in main lounge pianist every night music we all knew. There is a small dance floor buit most of the time he did not play music you could dance to. Pity. We had a humorous german lesson, german/Austrian music, and a presentation about Viking cruises. The choice of music was nice to listen to but a few of us wanted to dance. Was it good value? A balance of excellent itinerary, cost and type of venue. Everything was as advertised. The docking location in Budapest was excellent, right next to the Chain Bridge on the Buda side of Budapest. It was quite scenic. Each included tour was conducted very professionally by knowledgeable tour professionals. Viking River buses provided transportation from the riverboat to the starting point of the cruise. Also there were two versions of each included tour. One for those that wanted to see and experience everything and one for those that wanted to take it a bit slower, i.e., for those that might have a walking disability, etc. Each stop on the itinerary was very interesting and had both cultural as well as culinary value. During the evenings while in transit, Viking provided local cultural entertainment, including dancers, singers, folk costumed performers for many of the locations/countries visited. Other evenings the Cruise Director and Staff provided an overview of the daily activities for the coming day as well as insight into language and local customs. Had never been on a cruise and friends recommended a river cruise, specifically Viking. Viking staff took care of everything from the moment we arrived in Nuremberg until they saw us off at the Budapest airport. The room was clean, looked quite new, and was well designed and appointed. It was great to unpack and stow the suitcases under the bed until departure. All aspects of the room were well designed to be compact but allow for room to move around, store clothing in drawers and closet, and take care of all bathroom needs. Had a nice view through the sliding glass door. The ship itself provided for reading and computer usage in a library, indoor and outdoor dining, a lounge for entertainment and socializing, an upper deck with seating and several games, a concierge to help with sightseeing plans, and a person in charge of all the tours and activities, with a daily briefing in the lounge so that we always knew what the next day held. The dining was excellent, with options that included full meals, light meals, and snacks as well as soft drinks, coffee, tea, and a full bar. For each meal there were many options to include coverage of all tastes and diets; everything we ate was well prepared and seasoned. To start, we've cruised Viking before and discovered it to be a far superior and personal cruise line than many of their competitors. Cruising up the Danube from Budapest is probably one of the most scenic river cruises in the world. It was not only relaxing, but Viking docks almost every morning for an included tour of the local area sharing with us the local culture, and in many cases encouraging us to interact with the locals. It's always positive and fun. We also enjoy Viking's attitude towards it's passengers. They are always there to help and explain anything to us. The crews attitude is "you are on vacation, and we are here to make sure you enjoy yourself". I asked on our first Viking cruise, "do I have to dress up for dinner?'. Numerous responses to me were, "your on vacation, so dress casual and enjoy yourself" (I might add, they killed all future desire to ocean cruise ever again). Our cruise director is always there to explain what is happening when you pass through interesting areas and river locks, etc. We never felt so pampered, it was almost as if they couldn't do enough to please us (not that we expected this approach). The Viking Egil captain, as very busy man, was personable and always happy to explain ship operations, etc. This trip was taking by only my wife and me. Our children are all grown and we encourage them to try Viking too. Read Less

We had previously done the 8 day cruise on the Rhine with Viking and were looking forward to a cruise with them along the Danube. We were not disappointed. The trip was to be from Budapest to Nuremberg with stops along the way. Because of the height of the river, the ship did not make it to Regensburg and Nuremberg. They were able to bus us to our scheduled tours in Regensburg and Nuremberg. We knew before making our reservations, that there is always a possibility of modifications of the trip due to the water level. Because of the inconvenience of the long bus rides, they provided us with lunch at biergartens. The ship was very clean and you could hardly sense any movement on the river while docked and cruising. We enjoyed all of our meals and the available selections. We were fine with the wine and beer service at meals, and the availability of drinks if desired in the lounge as we are not heavy drinkers. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our cruise was for our 40th anniversary later in the year. One night when we returned to our room there was a bottle of wine, 2 glasses, a small cake, a card, two towels arranged as swans kissing and artificial rose petals on the bed. We met 2 couples from Kent- England and Ohio who we enjoyed time with at meals and in the lounge. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and added valuable insights to the tours. We were given great instructions on the use of the subway in Vienna and had no problems getting around on our own during free time. The average age of travelers was about 55+. We would definitely cruise with them again. Read Less

Our first cruise of any sort. The ship and itinerary appealed to us. We were not disappointed ! Every part of the trip was above our expectations. The food, ship, staff and off ship tours were amazing. We were definitely catered to! The passengers were all mature...mostly above 50. No children...they would have been bored. We met many new people, mostly American and Canadian, with a few Brits thrown in. The staff was a little more diverse but all spoke excellent English and all had a great sense of humor. The ship appeared to be new, practically pristine. The cabin and bath were beautiful but small by necessity. The bed was large and very comfortable. Great sleeping. We wondered about the motion of the ship being an issue but we could barely feel any movement at all. Food was plentiful and wonderful. Meals were a treat and never hurried Only dress code was for dinner in the main dining room and then it was just no jeans or shorts. The rest of the day was very casual. We took advantage of the included tours every day and spent the rest of the day just relaxing in the wonderful lounge or on the sun deck. Every day there was an optional tour offered and they sounded intriguing. We did get off the ship in a couple of towns and explore a little on our own...what a treat! We did our shopping in Cologne. Even though I hate air travel and all that hassle, we would love to do another river cruise! Read Less

I chose this cruise because I could see tulips, windmills, castles, and the Swiss Alps all on one trip. I id that with extensions before and after the cruise. While on the cruise, the crew was attentive, listened to my requests, remembered my desires, and waited on me like a queen. The bedding was perfect, even the pillows, and I have muscles that get cramped away from my own bed..We made friends with passengers and staff, both of whom we have remained in contact. As two around-80 women, we were the ship's mascots and well cared for. And oh, yes, the food was wonderful too. I liked that information was provided about the areas we were visiting and not just provided just for entertainment alone. Several times there was singing or musical perfermances that were enjoyable but again they were pertinent to the area. The shore excursions were diversified and interesting with well-thought out alternatives. Since I was slower on a cane, groups were organized for those of us who were not as fast as most passengers. We still saw the most important parts of the shore excursions at a more leisurely pace. Twice; in port, we hired taxis to take us through small towns and the staff was helpful in directly them where to take us. Also helpful in arranging for a hair appointment in port. My friend and I found the river cruise so enjoyable that we are looking forward to a Viking Ocean Cruise in a month. Read Less

We are not experienced cruisers, early 60's. This was our first river cruise and had been on one Caribbean cruise. We knew people who had cruised Viking, some multiple times. We heard only good so we booked Basel to Amsterdam with extensions in both cities. Viking takes very good care of you in all manners of transportation, connections and when on extensions. The Egil is a new ship. We were the second cruise. The rooms are typical. Small but nice. Efficient bathroom. The staff did a superb job of freshening the room unobtrusively. We opted for a balcony/veranda. Nice, but we got little use of it. Either too cold or we were docked against another ship. Save a few bucks and pass. I'm not a foodie. Meat and potatoes. I found the food good but not a reason to take the cruise. Others raved about the food. You won't go hungry. But if that's your thing, keep looking, IMHO. At lunch and dinner wine or beer is include. All you can drink. The Lounge became a second home. Nice, all windows. Casual. They don't try to screw you too bad on drink prices (wine- 6 euros or so, mixed drinks (manhattans)- 9). Nobody is searching your bags if you want to bring something on board. Daily (almost) tours are included. Always in the morning then time to explore on your own. All ranged from very good to excellent. Guides were generally entertaining and knowledgeable. Our guide in Cologne was a hands down expert on the cathedral. Knew everything and more. Optional tours are available ($50-75/person?). Most not interesting to us but we did go to some 1300's village that was great. We had a total of 177 passengers. I'd say we were about average age (early 60's). Almost no "young" (under 50) people, Zero kids. The other passengers were great. We pal-ed up with several different wonderful groups/couples that added greatly to the experience. All walks of life, all terrific. The small ship experience is terrific. You bump into the same people over and over. I don't think I'll ever do a big ship again. The management and staff were all great. After the first day they delivered my manhattan and wifes white wine as soon as they saw us in the lounge. I would not classify this as "luxury". Just good, solid, well done mid class experience. We will cruise Viking again. Read Less
