We booked this excursion thru the cruise line. We drove in a large bus to the Peninsula. Once there, we visited the Albatross center and saw many birds nesting. We then rode in ATV's to see several nesting penguins and many baby seals. Box lunches were provided. On the way back, we got a quick scenic tour of the city.

We booked them through Zealandier, priavte tour, covering everything we wanted to see on this port. They were superb, best day of the cruise. Ask for Trii, she was the best!

There is only one pair of breeding yellow-eyed penguins, but we got to see a chick. Since this species does not breed in captivity or tolerate egg swapping, there is little that can be done to manage them. The tour helps support the activities at the reserve. We also saw numerous little blue penguins, and seals pulled out on the rocks. A great experience for us was watching one of the rehabilitated yellow-eyed penguins being released.

Visited Dunedin in early morning & saw highlights - train station, world's steepest street (Baldwin Street), University of Otago, beautiful views from Signal Hill. Had absolutely breath-taking scenery on drive to Larnach Castle. Enjoyed gardens of castle & had so-so lunch there. Highlight of excrusion was visit to Penguin Place, where saw several yellow-eyed penguins & some happy looking seals sun-bathing on rocks. Also made brief stop at Taiaroa Head where we saw albatross soaring overhead

Dunedin was a great port call; but the ship actually uses Port Chalmers, then guests are transported into Dunedin and other venues for Dunedin. The staff who conduct tours to see Yellow-eyed Penguins, were all very helpful and gave a lot of good information about the penguins and their habits. They are amazing animals. This excursion will also allow the passengers to visit the local train depot and other city sights.

We hired a car and had a wonderful day driving round the Otago Peninsula - you need to get out and get onto the beaches - spectacular scenery, sea lions on the beach, sadly no penguins.

Dunedin, New Zealand-----We took the “Otago Penguin and Dunedin Panorama Experience” ships tour 5 hours. It starts with a drive thru the city while pointing out various places of interest, and then stops at the Botanical Gardens for a bathroom break and an opportunity to walk thru the gardens which are beautiful. The highlight of this tour was the Yellow Eyed Penguin Reserve. We were able to walk down to a bunker that was on the same level as the Penguin’s habitat. One caveat is that you descend down a winding path, but, you ascend up 85 steps which might be a challenge for some.
