We had an amazing but busy and somewhat exhausting (due to the high temperatures) time in Beijing and Xian and were ready to relax. We would recommend starting in Beijing and finishing in Shanghai. The ship was well equipped and the menu offered a good variety. The service was relaxed and a number of waitstaff crew were new but well instructed and trained by the amazing matre di "Jay". We enjoyed how the staff genuinely took care of our needs in the dining room and loved open sitting which afforded us to meet lots of new people. The ship is leased by Viking as ownership is not allowed by the Chinese gov't. It is comparable to the other ships in Viking's fleet. The entertainment on board was very good for a river cruise. We enjoyed the ethnic dress fashion show and the amazing Peking opera style fan man! Not sure who could be contacted but Some of the stairways at the ports are in need of attention as there are no hand rails, and very slippery. Many of the passengers, of all ages, were concerned about this. The suggested tipping in the guide book is outrageous- another single fare- (far excedes ocean cruises which have many more services and amenities). Viking did a first class job with organizing the tour guides, tours and flights. The land hotels were 5 star quality. We definately saw more of China in 12 days then we could have imagined. We fully endorse this trip by Viking!

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Peking Opera
We enjoyed a one hour show at a traditional Peking Opera house. Very well done and reasonable priced.

  • Badaling Great Wall
This was freaking amazing! We didn't expect the cable car ride up so that was a real bonus on this hot (40 degree) day. We could definately get a good view and the magnitude of The Wall.

  • Forbidden City
So glad we had a tour guide who was so knowledgeable and helped us weave our way through the crowds. Our experience was greatly enhanced because of this.

  • Hutong Tour
This was THE highlight of the trip for me. I really appreciated the opportunity to sit in a local woman's home, sharing a couple of tea, and having a chat and visit with her. The richshaw driver was very kind and respectful to his community. We enjoyed a quick demonstration of the game/exercise jianzi, which is similar to hackey-sac.

  • Tiananmen Square
A must do excursion, a bit more information on the historical significance/importance would be helpful to the group.

  • Shibaozhai Pagoda , Jingzhou, Gorge Dam
A very interesting history and challenge in the 12 story pavilion. The Elementary school visit in Jingzhou is a Viking sponsored (aka: passenger donations too) was a bit 'show biz' . The Tour of the Dam doesn't really take place just a model with description given and a walk around.

  • Shanghai Museum
Really liked how the tour at the Shanghai Museum was self guided with audio controller so the time was spent with individual interests.
The Wuhan Museum was too crowded to see the exhibits but the Bells Performance was very lovely and unexpected however you will want to have some hand sanitizer to use as the condition of the seats/arm rests are very dirty.
Hilton Xian is in need of refurbishing the rooms. The main attraction: The Terra Cotta Warriors was the main reason for the trip and it was magnificient! Very very very well worth it.

  • The Bund
We saw it at night and in the day. Not really an excursion but a must do for sure. Many buildings in the area are copy-cat replicas of world famous icons.

This area was so calm and cool. The hour tour was well done and the shopping area was also a calm experience.
