Just returned from Mexican Medley/ Pride of Panama cruise. When I discovered Thomson's new itinerary for this year I looked forward to exploring new places. On reading poor reviews for the earlier sailings, I felt concerned about booking. However decided to book online. So glad we went, it was excellent all round. Flight on Dreamliner very good. Plenty of room, comfortable seating. Food and drinks fine. Choice of films to watch good. On arriving in Montego Bay, it didn't take long to arrive on ship. I prebooked a cabin on deck 6. Good choice!! Cabin really comfortable and quiet. Thanks to our cabin steward Suwadi, for keeping it clean and tidy. Choice of where to eat good. We had breakfast & lunch in the Lido or Sirens, very good variety. Sirens do a wonderful afternoon tea. We ate in the Orion restaurant in the evening. Food excellent, again variety good. Special thanks to Alviz and Sumanitu for looking after us so well. Fantastic entertainers too! The shows in Broadway were of high standard. Some very good singers/ dancers. Enjoyed the crew show too. Thanks again to Alviz for arranging with the crew to sign our CD. Wonderful souvenir. Sorry to have missed you before we left to thank you for the fantastic service. All ports we visited had regulated taxi/tour guides, for those not booked on ships excursions. We did some really good sightseeing with locals. The roaming animals & birds in Cartagena port were fascinating to watch, could have spent hours doing just that. Look out for the talking parrot. Don't be put off by remarks about Colon. The port is fine. A large supermarket, prices very reasonable, other shops too. We took a trip with a local guide, which was very interesting. The canal shouldn't be missed. Thomson let us down with a trip I had booked online. It was cancelled last minute. It was a shame they didn't give those who had booked online months/weeks before the first chance of other trips. This was a trip in Costa Rica, however we manage to do the trip with a local guide. This probably turned out to our advantage. I felt sorry for others who missed out on this, and stayed on ship. Well done to Thomson for exploring new horizons. Can't wait for you to try some Asian ports too!!!

Fantastic time

  • Gatun locks, fort and rainforest
Passing through Colon on the way to the locks was interesting. The buildings are rundown, but must have been really beautiful once. The locks are not to be missed. Managed to arrive as a cruise ship was going through. Travelled through the rainforest after. Saw 2 kinds of monkey and a baby sloth. Arrived at the Fort, had a walk around.

A nice park to spend the day in. Lots to do and see. Booked this online, to do the manatee encounter. This includes use of the park with lockers. Plenty of sunbeds. Sea very calm.

  • Manatee Swim Encounter
The encounter was more about having photos taken. The swim after this, to watch the manatees underwater was fantastic. Beautiful graceful creatures, even had the chance to feed them.

  • Ziplining
Very friendly staff, really good with first time zip liners. With lots of encouragement just took off. Enjoyed this very much, lovely views over the ocean and countryside.

  • Dunn's River Falls
We took a trip to include Dunns Falls, Blue Hole and river tubing. Dunns Falls has guides, we managed to break free from our guide. Much better to climb the falls without a guide. It was a really beautiful place. We then went to the blue hole, a little scary track to the blue hole, but worth it. We had a guide here, who was excellent. Jumping into pools and walking down waterfalls, courage needed. The tubing on the white river was good fun.

  • Private Tour
We went to Rocklands bird sanctuary. Booked with a taxi driver, he didn't really want to take us there. Really glad we went, the humming birds were all around when we arrived. Feeding them from the little bottles was something special. The trail to walk around lovely too. From there we went to Doctor caves Beach. A nice beach to relax, or snorkel from.

  • Rainforest Aerial Tram Tour
The aerial tram tour was stunning. The views over the rainforest almost surreal. We were able to see our cruise ship, it was so clear. The walk down to the waterfall peaceful. Had a fleeting glance of toucan on the return tram.

  • The Tortuguero Canals
Took a trip on the canal, on a small boat with other Costa Ricans. The trip was very good. Saw howler monkey, colourful lizards, birds and baby croc. The guide was very good at pointing out the various birds and animals.

  • Little French Key
Chose to spend the day in LFK, mostly due to the animals, especially the jaguar. We took the basic package for the day, adding other activities. After arriving we were shown around. We went for a boat trip to snorkel. This was very good, lovely coral and many different fish. On arriving back we were shown around the animals, loved petting the monkeys. We then went for a horse ride. This was disappointing, only took a few minutes. The best part of the day, watching simba swim. He clearly loved his time in the sea.
