Statendam - South Pacific

Sail Date: September 2007
Destination: South Pacific
Embarkation: Los Angeles
After reading several reports from others about the 'aged' Statendam my husband and I were a little nervous about sailing on this older Ship! A lovely welcome with champagne and taken to your stateroom and very easy booking in.

Yes the Ship is older, and shows in several places rust and looks tired in several places, but!! the Ship was very very clean, and continual cleaning took place everywhere. The Captain was very keen on using |purel, which made us more comfortable about NOT getting one of the viruses.

Yes we did encounter (as previous forum members have said)problems with the flushing of the Loo, which unfortunately did not work on many occasions, after phoning the front desk it was soon put right. But this became quite annoying as it happened so often. I believe we were lucky as we had no overflow or anything of that kind. The whole system needs modernizing. At the end of the cruise, we had a very nice surprise of a $200 refund for each person because of the More trials with the 'loos'

The other bugbear, was our daughter had ordered a Navigator package of wine for our stay (our 40th Wedding Anniversary) a week after our Anniversary we heard from our daughter by email, that she wondered why we had not emailed and said 'thank you'!! We had no idea she had done this, and when she phoned H and America, they were very off hand and no apology etc etc, and so we had to go to the front desk and follow up why this package hadn't arrived for our anniversary. Eventually it was delivered to our Stateroom over 10 days late (not quite the same as having the surprise on the day!!) Apart from these two problems we were pleasantly surprised at many little extras this Ship offered, we have sailed on the Zuiderdam before and found that a very cold ship, whereas the temperature on the Statendam was very consistent. Service from all the staff was first class and nothing too much trouble.

The fresh flowers everywhere was a very nice touch and you definitely seem to have more fun, when there is a smaller number of people, than on the larger ships, whereas you can become just a number. Trips were rather expensive, and some of poor quality in content.Boarding and deboarding was done very quickly, another reason for the smaller ship!So after a nervous start(after reading reviews!) an excellent trip.
