On the positive side, the cruise was very enjoyable, with the more unusual Canary Islands being visited - La Palma & La Gomera and also Madeira, Lisbon & Oporto, all very interesting venues. The size of the Braemar helped in being able to get into the smaller ports. Oporto berth (port Lexioes) was quite a distance from Oporto itself, about 30-40 minutes by train. The entertainment for a small ship was very good too. The Braemar is a little bit older than many of the cruise lines we have tried so the cabins were somewhat smaller than we are used to but for 10 days we could cope, although it would put us off doing a longer trip on this ship. Our biggest winge was not so much the food, as it's availablity. When being out in port all day, returning some time after 2.30pm, there was no food until dinner time - even the pool bar stopped their limited service at 2.30pm. On another night, one lady came late to dinner and was refused service, being told to go to the special Indian buffet as she was too late for the earliest sitting service - she couldn't eat spicy food and was given no alternative! Come on Fred Olsen - this is meant to be a holiday not a borstal. Personally speaking, although we enjoyed this cruise, I wouldn't use the Braemar again unless the itinerary was unique. We just prefer a slightly larger ship.
