MSC Splendida Cruise Review by DutchBunny
- Sail Date: March 2013
- Destination: Western Mediterranean
We embarked in Barcelona, because of warning we expected a long wait but we arrived at the terminal at 12.30 and were at 13.00 in our cabin. Very efficient and quick.
Our first surprise was the inside cabin we booked, this one was much larger than the one on the Jade. It was really nice, clean and ok for our 6 day trip. The bathroom is ok. We always bring our won toiletries, never use the ons provided in hotels or cruise companies so we can't be bothered with what the offer.
Storage space in both the cabin as the bathroom are sufficient.
We met our cabin stewart and he did a good job during the cruise, kept the cabin clean and made us 2 towel animals on the gala nights.
Spa and fittness area; we used both and liken it. Fitness area is large enough and has a variety in equipment. We used the spa for massages and they were not cheap (we were in Indonesia 2 months ago and there it costs near to nothing) but the quality was very good. We also liked the open area in the Spa with the waiting area and bar.
We did not use the pools but they look very nice. Around the ship are more than enough loungers and we could use them all around the ship. It was not very busy.
We found the buffet restaurants very good, compared to the Jade. Food quality and taste was much better, also the way the restaurants look. Not like a cafetaria but nice with dark wooden furniture.
When we were on the Jade, we only had dinner in the MDR once and that was no success, the food was of no taste, so we used the speciality restaurants all other nights and liked that. This time we had dinner in the MDR on 4 out of 5 nights and we liked the food. It is not as nicely seasoned as we are used at home but for a holiday it is good. Especially on both gala nights the food was better than on the other nights. The last evening we were to tired to wait for our dinner (we had the 2nd seating at 21.00) so we went to the TexMex and liked both the steak as the enchilladas.
Breakfast in the buffet was good and lunch as well, although we had lunch in a nice local restaurant in Palermo and Civitavecchia.
For drinks we had the Allegrisimo package and this was worth the money pand for it. We like to drink some cocktails and also are heavy coffee drinkers.
We did not visit the theatre so I cannot tell anything about it.
We did not do any excursion with MSC. We were allready in Barcelona 4 days before embarkation. In La Goulette we stayed on board. In Palermo we used the ho-ho bus. In Civitavecchia we stayed in port because we were in Rome for a week 1,5 year ago so we did not want to take that trip.
In Genua we disembarkated and used the train to Milan (euro 9 p.p. for an one way first class) and walked around Milan before heading to the airport for our flight back to Amsterdam.
Overall we loved the ship, it is gorgious, clean, maybe a little big but that's ok. The crew was great, we talked to many of them. A lot of them come from Indonesia and we have been there a couple of times and love the country. But also the others are very nice and always love to have a talk with you.
What we also like very much was that they are not pushing you into more drinks. Also that they only have 1 or 2 anouncements per day instead of anouncements through out the day for trivia and art auctions.
Getting of the ship in Genua was also very smooth and easy and we even had a look at the new Preziosa which was also in Genua for the festivities that night.
Our conclusion of this cruise on the MSC Splendida is that it is worth the money you pay and maybe more. We paid Euro 379,00 p.p. for a 6 day cruise in an inside cabin (deck 13) and we had the Allegrisimo package for Euro 23,00 p.p.p.d.
Will we return on a MSC cruise, yes we might and we also recommand this line to friends and families. We also liked this ship much more than the Jade even though this is also a nice ship. But overall this cruise was much nicer.

We stayed in hotel Vilamari. A nice 4 star hotel next to the placa Espanya. They have a special cruises package which includes early check in, late check out and a bottle of Cava.
On our arrival day we just walked around the area and took the underground to the Ramblas. Walked around a bit and had dinner close to our hotel.
On Saturday we had made reservations at Go Car Barcelona. We rented a Renault Twizzy, a small electric car and perfect for sightseeing in Barcelona. We visited all the highlights in a relaxing way.
We had dinner in restaurant El Sortidor. Very nice dinner and wine,
On Sunday my husband ran the marathon and we only had dinner. This time at restaurant Luki. Also very nice and good value,
On Monday we took the underground to the Colombus Monument and from there the port bus to the ship. Very easy and did cost us only 9 Euro for 2.
