There are only a few blocks of Nassau that are generally considered "safe" to walk around. And even on those there is plenty of soliciting to dodge. I get that they survive on tourism dollars, but it's still less than enjoyable to have to say, "No, thanks." every 20 steps. Every 2 steps, if you're in the Straw Market. We found a taxi driver near the port who was willing to guide us along the island for around $60 dollars an hour US. He was very nice and took us to some great spots for lunch and shopping. ...
We just did a self tour of Nassau, walking up to the Fort Fincastle and the Queen's staircase. We also walked around the government buildings by the shops. There are only three real options at Nassau: Go to Atlantis, Walk around the shops by the ships, or go scuba\snorkeling. We chose to just walk around the shops. We bought a few trinkets and then returned to the ship. If we went on another cruise with this port, we would consider just staying on the ship. ...
