October 21st. The ride to JFK was long, there were two motorcycle accidents and the Whitestone bridge had a lane closed on it, so it took about 3 hours to get there....double the normal time. We parked the car in long term parking and headed out to the monorail (the air train they call it, but to me it's a monorail)...which lead us right into the airport. We checked in and waited. Several people were going on the cruise as well.

We arrived at our hotel,The Hilton Cavalieri in Rome...one word...fantastic The rooms all have special blinds to darken and a wall that is sound proofed. It was gorgeous, and the bed was one of those feather top beds. I climbed in and passed out cold. The food at the hotel was superb. They outdid themselves for the breakfast buffet. We are Hilton Gold Members, the room was with points, and VIP members (gold) get a balcony view and free breakfast. A very nice way to start the vacation.

Off we went to explore the vatican and St Peter's square. We walked around there, and walked along the Tibor river. It was getting dark, so we headed back to the hotel, where we had dinner in the Olive tree restaurant there. It was very very good! We got to bed early and slept all night. Early wake up for a tour of the Vatican and St Peter's tomorrow. We had purchased our tickets for the tours beforehand (online) that proved to be a very smart move. The sistine chapel was amazing. I wish we were able to lie down on the floor and just look up. I could have done that for hours. It's hard to put such beauty into words. After the tour, we walked briefly through parts of the vatican, and then out. We caught a Hop- On Hop off Bus, and took that around the city. There was no narrator, just earplugs that didn't work very well. Somewhere around the Spanish steps we got off and had a nice lunch. Rome is very hilly in areas. We saw the coliseum. Again...long long lines to get into there, so we avoided it. The next day, our driver from John James Fiore picked us up and whisked us to Civitavecchia via The Autostrada(very nice road, well paved and wide open). Arriving at the ship, I just stood in awe at her...the Legend is old, but she is gorgeous.
