This cruise on the Viking Star traveled a very interesting route that enabled us to return to Italy and Greece while seeing new locales, especially Croatia, Monaco, southern France, and Spain. Onboard service was uniformly excellent, with a highly competent and attentive staff. The entertainment ranged from very good to superb, with an unusual degree of variety.. A similar range applied to the cuisine. The offerings at the Chef’s Table were especially imaginative and delicious. The dinners at The Restaurant were fairly basic, but tasty. The only mild disappointment was the ship’s Italian restaurant. The shore excursions had a wider range of quality. The guided tours of Dubrovnik and Split, Venice’s islands of Murano and Burana, and Herculaneum were excellent. Those of Florence and Barcelona were no more than adequate, and the tour of Monaco and Nice was acutely frustrating and disappointing. On balance, this was a well-handled and most enjoyable cruise. We accompanied my wife's sister and her husband on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Once we got through Passport Control at the Venice Airport, a series of friendly Viking representatives shepherded us to the waiting shuttle bus for the ride to the Viking Star. Check-in on the ship went smoothly, and it wasn't long before our luggage joined us in our cabin. The Viking Star is a beautiful ship. The public areas are well appointed, with comfortable seating in small groups conducive to conversation. Our cabin was very nice, with plenty of power-points for our electronics. Not that we spent much time there when we weren't sleeping. The only negative about the cabin, which was very near the front on Deck 5, was a large spotlight hanging down from the deck above - it blocked some of the view toward the front, from the cabin and veranda. But we still had great views directly to the side. The food was excellent. We were able to eat in the Chef's Table four times, and Manfredi's once. It was fun to try dishes at the Table I probably would not have, otherwise. I wouldn't want to slight the other dining options, as food was excellent in all of them. The entire food service crew made dining a pleasure. Even on night in the Chef's Table when the food wasn't coming up from the galley as promptly as in normally did. Our servers kept us apprised of the situation, and did everything they could to make the wait more bearable. We did a mix of included and optional excursions, and we enjoyed them all. Our only disappointment was the "daVinci" excursion in Florence was cancelled due to lack of participation. But the Pisa excursion we took instead was most enjoyable. Read Less

We reserved early on a V1 level cabin so that we could indulge in the Tuscan 3 night pre cruise extension, and other non-included excursions. The Tuscan extension was three nights at Villa Il Poggiale near Florence. It was an outstanding experience. Trumpy Tours handled this extension and our other shore excursions in Italy. All were well thought out and executed. The Viking Star is an excellent ship. The ships crew was excellent. The Main dining room service and food was excellent. Staff training and service at the buffet dining on the 8th deck was spotty. Beverage service in common spaces, away from the bars, was non existent. If you pay for the beverage package, you won't get the all-ship service that you are used to on premium lines like Crystal, Seabourne etc. Our cabin service and housekeeping were flawless. Overall, Viking offers a high value, education oriented, experience for mature travelers. We just booked our third Viking Cruise. Read Less

Our adult children chose this cruise from a few available choices of cruise lines. It was also my first choice. The four of us enjoyed the ship and the excursions as well the entertainment on board. We got to play games such as golf and bocci and had lots of fun. We also got to know each other again as our last vacation together was in 1995. The rooms were very spacious and clean. The staff were always pleasant and accomodating. The housekeeping staff were always so friendly and always remembered our names. We also liked the fact that there are no formal nights and that the restaurants sitting were not assigned so we could go anytime we wanted therefore we got to meet a lot more people. We also loved the fact the ship doesn’t play loud music and it’s not crowded. No problem getting on and off the ship however disembarkation was not so smooth. We arrived in Venice a day early giving us more time to explore on our own before boarding the ship. Read Less

We liked the ports and the smaller ship. This ship had everything I like about cruising and none of the things I don't like. The crew was wonderful! Both speciality restaurants were very good and loved the dining room. There were many options for meals all day. The spa is well equipped and services very high quality. No shops trying to sell ship products. The casual dress code makes packing much easier. Scandinavian decor and Viking artifacts are subtle and beautiful. No casino or loud music is is a plus. We have booked two more cruises. Both of our future cruises will be on new ships. I have and will continue to recommend Viking to our friends. We have been on many ocean cruises and this was by far our favorite. We liked Viking so much that we have booked our first river cruise. We liked our cabin so much that on our next ocean cruise we booked the same cabin, we really liked the location. Read Less

The ship was so well appointed and comfortable (like sitting in your own home). The same for the cabins which were so perfectly designed for maximum comfort. The dining experience is unique and kept interesting with geographically curated menus. The enrichment lectures were so good and the port talks were extremely helpful and definitely helped boost our confidence in navigating ports. Viking service is second to none. The service is so good and we were so well taken care of during our journey. Overall the Viking travel experience is one we plan to repeat over and over. So far we have traveled with Viking on two ocean cruises and one river cruise, but have another river cruise coming up in August 2019. It would be very hard for us to travel on another cruise line as it could never measure up to a Viking cruise. Viking consistently delivers that elegant comfort and we enjoy so much. Read Less

We were invited by my sister to join them to celebrate their 50th ANNIVERSARY. I experienced some breathtaking moments. Visiting the ancient places of worship and walking in Van Gogh's steps left me with profound emotion. I have traveled alot but I saw things I never even dreamed of seeing. There are no bad excursions. The ship was flawless. We managed to make Manifreds twice and Chefs Table 4 times. Visited the spa, had a massage, went in the showroom. I really don't know how I got the energy but every minute was busy. All of the different relaxation areas were just that. We bought patches, sea bands, ginger, and dramamine but never needed to use them on the ship. Used some dramamine on 2 bus rides. LOL. Transportation on excursions and to and from the airport were very smooth. We have already booked 2 more Viking cruises. Wouldn't consider any other cruiseline. Read Less

LAUNDRY: Many of my fine linen items came back shrunken even though my instructions were specific about their care. FOOD: Nothing to write home about - staff had difficulty communicating in English. BUFFET: Seafood buffet had a "fishy" smell quite evident even when just passing. WINES: Overly disappointed with our "included wines" which were a simply a " red or white" PERIOD! My husband is a Sommelier and my palate is definitely educated, so I drank premium wines, but still none that I would consider as being chargeable. TOURS: The Viking tours we opted for (both paid and included) were substandard. ENTERTAINMENT: Repetitive and devoid of choices. STATEROOM: Our toilet did not work 25% of our cruise! Guest Services said many staterooms had same problem! DEMOGRAPHIC: Geriatric and inactive! POOLS Small. PRICING: At $21,466.00+ we expected much more! I sent a direct notice to Viking Headquarters, but never received a response. Read Less

We went on a Viking River Cruise last year and it was fabulous. We wanted to do the Mediterranean so we chose Viking again. Everything about the ship was fabulous. Food, accommodations, experience and entertainment. The only downfall were some of the included tours. They were nothing like the ones we experienced on the river cruise. VERY disappointed. I’m sure the ones you paid for were much better, but a lot of those were already sold out when we got a chance to book. I would definitely recommend Viking to everyone and hopefully we will use them in the future. We also enjoyed having many eating options on the ship. The buffet was always fresh and very appealing and the other sit down restaurants were very good as well. We certainly enjoyed the entertainment in the evenings, every night was something different so that made it very nice. Great experience Read Less
