My husband and I went on the Viking Rhine cruise and I couldn't wait to go on another. I went with a friend for this excursion and had a blast. From Paris to Luxembourg to Germany to Czech Republic, we saw so much of Europe. The tour guides were great and I felt like I learned a lot on the trip. The entire staff is terrific - very friendly, helpful and professional. The ship is beautiful! I loved just walking around, through the lounge and on deck, even the wheel house on the tour! Although I would have loved to have spent more time in each port, I felt that we had enough time to get a good taste of every stop. The food was fantastic, too. I didn't really know what to expect on our first cruise. I ate enough every day to have gained weight but with all of the walking we did every day, I lost a few pounds! Bonus!! Read Less

After about a dozen ocean cruises we decided to try a river cruise. We chose Viking as they have a very good reputation. We had a French balcony on deck three and had ample room for all our stuff. We started with two days in Paris and ended with two days in Prague. Both cities were amazing. From the moment we got off the plane we were taken excellent care of by the Viking staff. We loved the layout of the ship and the food and included wine. The excursions were very well organized with excellent guides. Our Cruise Director, Bojan was truely delightful and he kept us laughing while also making sure that we were all accounted for at every stop. All the staff were friendly and professional. Although the river levels were high we were able to do the entire trip on the rivers. We purchased coupons for a future cruise with Viking and want to find one that includes Budapest. Read Less

We have traveled a good part of Europe and have toyed with the idea of a river cruise. With the Cities of Lights cruise it gave us the opportunity to extend both our front end stay in Paris and our final stay in Prague and experience river cruising on the Moselle, Rhine and Mein. To say that the cruise exceeded our expectations would be an understatement. Our experience on the Viking Odin was fantastic. The entire crew, amenities, food and cabins were first class. We wouldn't change a thing. Excursions via motor coach in Luxembourg and Germany were well planned, educational and inspiring. Our tour guides in each stop were exceptional. Their knowledge, humor and patience made each excursion something to look forward to. Traveling through the many locks along the rivers was an unexpected thrill and gave us the opportunity to watch the expertise of our captain navigate the Odin through the channels that was inches wides than our ship. We are already planning our next river cruise. Read Less

We like to see places. With the tour in every port and the river cruising during daylight, our needs were greatly satisfied. The scenery along the rivers was spectacular, and the cities on the tours were unique, historical and very interesting. The accommodations were excellent, but the on-board activities were very limited. We would have liked to have seen more and better entertainment, and an exercise room. The small number of passengers on a cruise like this gave us the opportunity to meet and talk with a lot of people from several countries. The staff were always friendly, very helpful and bent over backwards to make the cruise a pleasant and fun trip. The food was tasty and there was good variety to choose from. The entire cruise was very well organized and coordinated, and all of the ports were interesting. Viking is a cruise line that I would not hesitate to recommend. Read Less

This was our first river cruise with Viking, and it couldn't have been a better experience. We were met at the airport by our Viking representative and taken to our hotel in Paris. From that point on we were taken care of completely. At all times at our hotels in Paris and Prague, there was a Viking representative available to assist with booking tours or just giving directions. The Odin was very nice - probably the best cruise ship we have experienced - and the crew was friendly and attentive, and the meals were excellent. This was also our first trip to Europe, and we really enjoyed experiencing all of the Medieval castles and small towns along the rivers. If I had to find something to complain about, it would be not having enough time in each port. If you go on the available tour in each port (which were excellent), then you wouldn't have enough time to explore the village completely. I would give up one of the ports to allow more time for the others. However, we enjoyed it so much that we booked another one as soon as we got home for next year. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it offered 2 nights stay in both Paris and Prague, and a visit down three rivers with stops in many towns that we were unfamiliar with in Germany. We did purchase the liquor package and only because we are not big beer or wine drinkers. we definitely got our moneys worth but I must add that the wines they served with dinner and lunch were top notch. Before booking this cruise it did not occur to me to check into the rising and falling of these rivers. I had no idea that they were prone to flooding at certain times of the year.Fortunately for us we left Paris before the flooding started and managed to maneuver the rivers without any problems. The sun deck had to be closed down during the last three days of our journey but that was due to having to pass under a series of bridges and the fact that the river was high. ( this was closer towards Prague) The service on this ship was superior. The crew members called us by first names and the captain joined in quite often with the passengers. He even helped with the loading on of fresh fruit and vegetables at certain stops. The meals were excellent and the entertainment although not up to cabaret standards was very good, enjoyable and related to the places we visited. You must remember.... this is not an ocean cruise. there are no swimming pools, casinos, mega bars or tons of people. Do not expect it to be like sailing on a Princess ship. this is a different experience and one that we enjoyed immensely and will treasure always. We met some fantastic people and had a great time all around. There were no line ups for security and bag checking embarking or disembarking at the ports... the buses to take you on the tours were new and comfortable and the guides immensely informative. I found a couple of times we did break away and go off on our own as some people are very slow. the average age of people on the ship I would say are in their 50's to 80's.. Our cabin was very efficient, we had a veranda and I found more than enough drawers and storage for our belongings. A lot more than on a ocean liner. I would not hesitate to recommend this Viking cruise or any other ones they offer. I am now looking into one of their ocean voyages. Read Less

He was such a pleasant person and made each day more enjoyable. Some of the couples we met have become dear friends who I plan to keep in touch with. They are already e-mailing me on their next cruise on Viking in hopes we can all get together once again. The hotels we stayed at in Paris and Prague were beautiful. Our rooms were spacious and very clean. The overall pace of this itinerary was perfect for passengers our age(senior citizens). I will definitely be sailing again with Viking in the near future. This was our first River Cruise. I am so thankful we picked Viking Odin. They were wonderful, from the pickup at the airport, checking into the Paris hotel, transportation to Trier for the River Cruise, checking into the hotel in Prague and then finally dropping us off at the airport. The Viking crew were wonderful. We could not say enough about the staff and how much they seemed to care that we were enjoying ourselves. Our cabin was spotless, Nicoletta was lovely and always made sure we were comfortable. Radim the Program Director was amazing. That guy never stopped - he really knows how to keep everything running smoothly and obviously loves his job. The dining was always spot on, everyone worked so well together and they all did a great job of bringing you things before you even thought you needed it. We were very happy with the food choices at each meal. The wines changed as we went through each region, the beers were excellent also. Unless you are really into a certain drink, the spirit package is really not necessary. I think the excursions were handled very well, we had three different groups most of the time, leisure and two faster but not so fast you couldn't take the photos you would like. There was always some free time at each of the ports we stopped at. We are in our 50's and had a great time - we look forward to another trip on Viking River Cruises. Read Less

Our tour director, Claudia, met us in Paris and remained with us for the entire trip. She was always accessible, made sure everyone knew schedules, always informative and friendly. I was disappointed that the boat did not dock within walking distance to the town at each port. It was so much more enjoyable when that was possible. The guides in each port were terrific. They were knowledgeable, interesting, and aware of our needs i.e. directions during free time, rest room breaks, recommendations. I was disappointed in the lunch that was served at the hotel in Heidelberg although eating with a college student was a nice touch. Unfortunately we did not arrive in Prague until late afternoon and by the time we got to our room, the day was almost over. Having only Sunday to tour the city and leaving early Monday morning for our flight home didn't leave much time to enjoy Prague. It was one reason we chose this trip. The breakfast buffet was great and Bello and Bella were terrific wait staff. Read Less

The cruise was spectacular. The entire staff was perfect. The tours were all interesting and really very well planned. We had time to see the points of interest and hear all the discussions about the history and local flavor. Weather was a little bit of an issue and it means packing clothes that will work under a variety of situations. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and broken in since walking is a big part of the trip. We travelled with friends but certainly during the trip met many people that we interacted with on a daily basis. This was certainly part of the fun. Every evening there was an activity/event in the ballroom and always worth going. Our favorite was the glass blowing. Our room had a television but we didn't turn it on until the last day! The internet connection was the only downside of the entire trip. Slow and hard to access. This was not a big issue for us but there was certainly grumbling about it. The food was all excellent. The open dining worked well and you meet people along the way and certainly eat with friends old and new. Unlike some cruises the food is not non-stop. That actually worked well and kept the calories and eating in general in a more normal scope. You are certainly never hungry. We bought the bar special for the trip and really enjoyed the crowd that routinely went there in the evening. As a beer drinker I would have liked more options but it was more than adequate. Service was 5 star in all ways. We plan to go again and try a new route. Read Less

This was my second Viking river cruise. Based on how much I enjoyed the first one, I persuaded 3 friends to join me, and we were not disappointed. I personally enjoyed Prague more than Paris, so I wish we had chosen the opposite itinerary, giving us more time in Prague when we were not already overloaded with sights and a bit tired (my companions may not agree). I skipped 2 of the more strenuous excursions due to an injured knee, and actually had a lovely time on the ship as it glided down the river. In future, I may opt out of some excursions solely for the relaxation of it. (But I enjoyed the excursions I did take, and am especially grateful I did not miss Nuremberg. Our guide Tom was amazing and gave us such insight into Germany's journey toward self-understanding post WWII.) We made friends with 2 other women, so the 6 of us ate dinner together every night. I enjoyed the food, the easy on-and-off of the ship, the attention of excellent staff, the entertainment and especially the gorgeous scenery (long bus rides not so much). Already thinking about my next trip in a year or two. Read Less

Our program directors was a fun lively gal. Saw so many things on the shore excursions. Glad we took lots of pictures to help us remember all the places we were. Although all the guides were very knowledgeable and eagerly shared their wealth of knowledge, sometimes it was almost too much. There is only so much history one was adsorb at one time. Probably would have preferred to have a little less guided time and a little more free time on most of the shore excursions. The Hotel in Paris - Le Meridien was being renovated and you could hear all the work being done early in the morning above us. We had the furthest room from the elevators and took 20 minutes just to get to the Lobby. Hotel breakfast was good. Hotel Staff was attentive. Everything else in Paris was lovely. Vikings tour of the city was fine. We departed for Luxembourg and had an excellent guide. However, our bus broke down and we had to wait for another and transfer luggage, etc. It all turned out for the best because we got to the US military burial site from WW II late in the day and saw the lowering of the flag and hear the Taps anthem which was a plus and a highlight. The boat - Odin and the food were great. Cruise was very enjoyable. All the tours were wonderful especially Heidleberg. Only comments would be - staying in the cities longer and giving more free time. The only main problem was that the boat runs on "German time" and they are too precise and not very understanding (example - they don't wait one minute past the time of departure and a couple missed the boat and had to take a taxi to the next port - it was not us but it was embarrassing for the couple) and the cruise director sometimes did not make herself very clear announcing the tour and to get off the boat. One time the boat was still moving and we did not realize it was time to get off because of unclear announcement (in fact they pride themselves on not making a lot of announcements however this just causes more confusion). I was devastated that we missed the tour and was crying and no one on the boat at guest relations did anything nice for me and it was my Birthday. I felt a small gesture would have been nice and they were not very considerate based on the amount of money we paid for the cruise. All the tours we did go on were conducted professionally with very knowledgeable guides. The Prague Hilton was a very nice hotel with an outstanding breakfast buffet - i.e. Nutella muffins. The hotel was not in the city center however and we thought this was a problem at first until we learned our way around. Prague was very beautiful and great city to visit. Another thing I liked were sometimes when we boarded back to the boat they offered drinks and or snacks/refreshments, this was a nice touch. They always provided water which was most appreciated. No fitness center on board was a drawback. Read Less

I loved everything about City of Lights trip. Our accommodations in Paris and Prague were wonderful. I loved both of these beautiful cities. We met out Program Director, Claudia, in Paris. Claudia is extremely knowledgeable and lots of fun! How she kept track of all of us is beyond me. She was always available to answer our questions or assist us in any way. Our group of 20 wanted to adopt her! The river cruise was absolutely fantastic! Everyone on board was very friendly, helpful and welcoming. They were also excellent at carrying out their various responsibilities. They could not do enough for us. I found river cruising to be a wonderful way to travel. The ports of call were fascinating. I learned so much from our tremendous guides. A few times some of us decided to stay on board instead of going on the tour. It was beautiful to see the towns and vineyards along the rivers. The free time we spent in the ports of call was very much appreciated. We were able to get a feel for the various places and people by stopping at cafes, shopping and just walking around. The food on the boat was excellent at every meal. I enjoyed hearing about the evening meal preparations from our chef, Andy, at our daily briefing. We had surprises from the kitchen everyday including a beautiful dessert buffet one afternoon. The demonstrations (cooking, German lessons etc.) and the special programs we had in the evenings including a classical pianist and violinist and the traditional German folk band were wonderful. My criticism are that due to low bridges we were unable to use the top deck for a number of days. Also, we had a near catastrophe when several people from our group attempted to go on the top deck after dinner and were almost hurt or killed by a low bridge. The captain screamed "get down" and they were scared but ok. I believe we should have been informed that there would be times when we would be unable to use the upper deck before we signed on. And certainly a rope or barrier should be put up to prevent people from going up the stairs when it is dangerous. Overall it was a fantastic experience. This was my first trip abroad and after City of Lights I know it won't be my last. I hope to take a river cruise again in 2017! Read Less

We were greeted at the airport in Paris by a Viking rep and escorted to our hotel. There we met with another rep and got great information on what the schedule was and what to do while there. Once it was time to leave Paris to catch our boat we boarded busses by letter assignment and we then stayed with that bus assignment for all tours. I thought this was an excellent method to not only keep everyone together, but it gave us a chance to meet our traveling companions and make friendships that lasted the whole trip. Although we had bus problems on the way to the boat, the Viking staff handled them quickly. It shows good organization when there is a hiccup but it is addressed quickly and with very little disruption to the guests. The boat cruise was very relaxing all through Germany with good food and really outstanding service. I had to work hard to get my wine glass empty because there was always someone there to refill it. We started poorly. The hotel in Paris was not able to have our rooms ready by the 3 p.m. deadline. Instead, we were not allowed into our room until well after 5 p.m. Our wake-up call did not materialize and thus we missed our assigned bus ride to our port of embarkation, Trier. Our cruise should have lasted 6 nights. Instead, the Odin broke down and we were stranded at a small German town - Ashafenburg - if my spelling is correct, for three of those nights. Our river cruise turned into a bus tour - not what I signed up for! There was sporadic electric service, toilets did not flush, a/c was non-existent and the kitchen staff ultimately ran out of the food they had intended to serve. However, when the kitchen was running at full tilt, the food was very good. Tour guides tried their best and the staff in the dining room and the cabin crew did their best. The officers not so much. The captain did not speak English - this on a boat with 189 Americans aboard - and the Hotel Manager who translated for him, did not give us the captain's full explanation. I don't speak much German but I do know the word propeller. That was never mentioned in the translation. The entertainment on board was mediocre, the wine tasting, at an additional expense, was disappointing although the tour of Prague was well done. The final straw was that the plane, the flight arranged by Viking, from Prague to Heathrow was late in leaving Prague causing us to miss our connection back to the states. When we finally boarded the following day, we sat on the tarmac for 21/2 hours before departing. Altogether, the trip from _ _ _ _ !! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary - Paris to Prague. However we did not read the itinerary carefully enough and "Paris" and "Prague" turned out to be only half day bus tours. That was very disappointing. Once there are paying for the trip, I was at least expecting a full day with some meals thrown in. The other bid disappointment about the cruise was how little time we had to enjoy the boat itself. The boat was beautiful, but we were on buses off to see sights everyday. One of our party quipped that he wasn't sure if ours was a bus trip with a river cruise or a river cruise with a bus trip! That sums it up though - we were constantly being bussed (anything from 1/2 to several hours) away to see sights. The other downer on our trip was that by the end, everyone on the boat was sick. on the first day, there were maybe 2 people coughing, but by the end more than 70% of the ship was sick. In our party of 8, one became seriously ill and all of the other 7 had to take at least one day off because of illness. Though there were plenty of exhortations to people to wash their hands, etc. spending hours every day in a bus with sick people was probably the cause of the spread. The best part of the cruise was the day we spent cruising down the Rhine, in the sunshine, watching for castles on both sides of the river. It was relaxing, and the commentary was lighthearted. As a vegan, I was pretty hard pressed to find the food I wanted to eat. All in all, I thought the food was just average - though I enjoyed the lunches more than the dinners. Read Less

The hotel in Paris was very good, not great. It was very close to the Champs Elysees so touring around before the start of the planned tour was very easy and good. The Tour in Paris, like the other cities, was excellent. Using tour guides from the places you are visiting is great. You get good information from locals, not what is printed by somebody for another talking head to repeat. The use of head sets and a dedicated wireless channel was a great idea. You don't get 'duelling tour guides' yelling over each other or not being able to hear what is being said. There was enough free time in most ports to be able to walk around on your own to experience the local area. This was of particular interest to us as we are both Geocachers and were interested in finding geocaches where we stopped. The ship was fantastic with excellent service, crew, and food. The crew members are approachable and willing to chat. We had an excellent talk with one of the officers during an evening cruise. I recommend this cruise to all my friends. Read Less

The highlights: Everything while aboard the Odin. It could not have been any better. Excellent officers and staff, excellent food, excellent accommodations with roomy shower, and sliding glass French door. Beautiful scenery. The tour director was outstanding. Good entertainment. Rated five star, A+ The low lights: The long airline flights in uncomfortable, narrow close together seats, whether on Delta Air France or KLM. We were surprised that even though it was called a city of lights vacation, there was no evening tour included in either Paris or Prague. In between: Some excursions were outstanding and interesting with local guides. Others were rushed. As an example, in Prague, we toured the Palace and walked on cobblestones for nearly four hours, with a fifteen minute break. The earphone system was a plus on all of the tours. Since we were in a part of the world where the history spans centuries, it was difficult to keep up with the narratives at times since they were about Norman times at one minute and the World War II in the next. The hotel in Paris, le Meridian was adequate, and although our room was ok, many people had comments about broken tiles, carpet problems etc. Read Less
